quiet frankly, from the little i've seen of him, he aint that good. Seems a good long kick, but that's all he has going for him.

How do you guys rate him though? Is he quick? What's he like?

he was in and out of the team for his entire career at hawthorn. he's only 22. beautiful kick, suprised we traded him  could be a player. needs to toughen up. was very good in second half of season for us. running goals from outside 50m were common.

lonie, he will become a gun player in a gun side, ie. stkilda. But I think the power will be on the slide within the next year or two, so I don't know whether he will be an asset for them in the short term.I would have loved to have kept him to enjoy the success we will have in the next 3 - 4 years, as he would have been an even better player when we became a force. The better the team, the better the player is Lonie, as it proved on 2001, when he became a player of imense potential.
Good luck nathan, you will become a top liner in the next few years, hopefully we may be able to get you back when the hawks become the force of the comp! :thumbsu:

Could be a great addition to an already strong side. Easy to imagine him kicking a dozen goals in a finals series. But the side around him would have to be already there.

I'm glad we traded him...hopefully we concentrate more on "mongrel" types and not these, for want of a better term, fairies. A good kick doesn't count for much if you can't get your head over the ball. Let's get back to the old days of the rough, tough Hawthorn men!!!

Not real happy he's gone.

Yea, he's soft as all out but he's quick, lovely kick and could well prove like bbird said a better player in a better side.

Give him some room to move in (i.e play him on a wing with instructions to run foward) and you might have a bonus player in him (we all know the 14 was for Motlop).

he may be soft, but a strong team needs a play maker and lonie would be a gun at the right side. He proved how effective he can be in our 2001 finals side, but when we have struggled, so has nathan. He may not be tough in his physicality, but he makes up for it in skill. In a team that wins the ball for the majority of the game, nathan would have a huge influence, so I hope he has a good career.
Nathan has had a tough life, losing his father recently, so all hawthorn supporters, don't bag the young man, get behind him a wish him all the best, because he has alot of talent and character to take him alonfg way to have a succesful career, all the best nathan! :thumbsu:

Sorry to see him go, agree with what has been said good player in a better side ,beautiful kick ,you need players like Lonie in any successful side . Quality young guy as well it seems ,never forget him going out of his way to come over & talk to my three young blokes when i took them out to Glenferrie to watch the Hawks train one cold winter's night & neither will they.Good luck Nathan.

Lets get one thing straight. Lonie is not a beautiful kick.. He can kick long and straight but that is about it. He has shown little ability to kick creatively and execute consistently. If he was a good kick he would have spent more time with the kick in duty but he stuffed it up alomst every time he was given the chance.

Saying he could be a gun is overstating it - he could be a usefulit part player because of the qualities everyone has mentioned, but you can never be a top liner if you can't win contested ball.

I was sad to see Lonie go.
Clarkson talked up how we got 2 first-round picks for Hay, but forgot to mention that we had to give away a quick, tall, long-kicking flanker for nothing.
Basically we got pick 14 for Hay and 18 for Lonie. Not a great outcome in this draft.

To me its good to see him go.

You gotta get the ball before you can kick a goal, NL wasnt a getter, he was a receiver.

I remember a game @ TD against Geelong in 2004. NL was being dragged or replaced, whatever and Chance Bateman was coming on. Chance put his hand out as u do to just slap hands as they pass. NL completely ignored CB and ran straight past to the dugout! CB ran on and looked back absolutely perplexed at why NL would just ignore him so. If that is a sign of his attitude I say good luck and cyal8r.

Bobs up every now and then, but out of the two, I would take Dixon anyday. He is also a bit hot and cold, but DOES put his head over the ball and has a bit of mongrel about him. Left foot players are notorious for being horribly one-sided (like Lonie) but i would rate Dicko one of the best, if not THE best right foot kick, being a left footer, in the league.

Well on the basis of that little anecdote, he must have a shocking attitude and I gues Chance would've gone through several sessions of counselling to overcome the fact that Lonie didn't tag him on as he was being 'dragged'.

:p

Can't say I've ever been that keen to tag a bloke on if I know I'm coming off for form/discipline reasons.

Having said that, I also don't think he will be a huge loss. The style of football we are learning to play doesn't really have much room for the Lonie type unless he's prepared to put his body on the line more. He seems too content with running by for the handpass and long-bomb rather than looking to contest in the air or on the ground and getting/making a few hits.

People complain that Lonie was not a bottom-of-the-pack player, he simply ran past for the handball and kicked it long. Other players have made a great career out of doing exactly that, Nathan Buckley comes to mind.
IMO judging by other trades this year, eg. Ted Richards = slighlty better than pick 19, Richie Cole = pick 23, then Lonie on his own was nearly worth pick 18. Jonny Hay has achieved a whole lot more than Fergus Watts or Ted Richards so he should have been worth a lot more than pick 14. I really don't think we did that well out of the trade. Would have preferred to trade Hay to Freo for pick 10 and keep Lonie, or trade him for Thurstans.

Sorry books, yes buckley could be accused of recieving handballs ie after shaking a tag, running to the contest and maybe ducking and weaving a few blokes and breaking a tackle or two. This is on top of all the hard ball gets and one percenters the bloke gets. As much as i dislike Buckley it is only because of how good he is. Thats the biggest load of crap i have ever heard.

I'd have to agree, Buckley has been a champion in all facets of the game. If you're going to talk about players simply running past for the handball all their careers you can't look any further than Wayne Campbell

Not too sure if it has been mentioned already but Nathan was offered more money and a 3 year deal from Port....he was very happy to accept it I hear.
Good luck to him, as a Magpie supporter I hope his brother puts in a better year in 2006 as well.

Yea, I heard it and was quite taken aback by it neatagreen. Three years for a bloke that hasn't cemented a spot in a side that (lets face it) has struggled for the time he's been on our list...

Interesting to say the least.

Can't say as I blame him for taking the offer up either, a literal 'to good to refuse'.

I wasn't saying Lonie would be as good as Buckley, just making a point.
Campbell is a better analogy, soft and wide, but Lonie is a better kick and Campbell played nearly 300 games.
But if Lonie got a better offer and was happy to go, fair enough, I just wish we had got something for him.

Are you for real???
Quick...........more like slow medium
tall...............average height
long kicking.......i'll give you that.

While i enjoyed watching Nathan kick 55mtr goals from the left forward flank, the Lonies are soft as marshmallows and and been found out.
How Collingwood rated Ryan as a top 20 pick defies logic!.
