Re: Names in Jerseys

why fix what isnt broken?

everything is being done these days for TV.

Newcomers dont follow a specific player, they are too entrenched in figuring out what is going on, then after a season, they know the game and players

Re: Names in Jerseys

I'd like to see a name on something like the training jumpers they sell or clash jumpers (not necessarily on match day). Thinking back to my first jumper and if I wore it now people would think I love Brent Stanton instead of James Hird. Not really what I'm going for but if the name was there, no confusion.

Re: Names in Jerseys

How come the surname of each player isn't written on the back of their respective jersey?
Because we don't need to. Are you seriously telling me you need to see the names of Judd, Hodge, Ablett or Pavlich on the jumper to know who they are ? As for new players, learn their numbers FFS, it's really not that hard. And if you see a goal by a player you don't know, is it really going to affect your experience at the footy that much. Besides, the numbers are a hell of a lot bigger than the names. I suppose you are saying that the AFL logo on the numbers is a good idea too. Bloody ridiculous. Like we are going to confuse the back of a footy jumper, with that of say a rugby jersey.

Throwing the "but for those new to the game" argument in is like saying we need to spend 1.5 Billion on a ticketing system because it's easier for the tourists. Just plain dumb and a last resort. I didn't need have names on the back of a jumper to know the players when i was growing up. I learnt them. Just another example of modern society where we want everything on a plate, right here, right now without having to think about anything.

I suspect they did this so that the AFL make money out of the sale of numbers, rather than the previous blank ones which could be supplied by anyone without a licensing fee. Pretty reasonable in my eyes.

Re: Names in Jerseys

If they got surnames on the back of shirts in First Class TEST MATCH CRICKET then why not have it in AFL
They certainly don't!

How about we just leave the GUERNSEY how it is. It's a team sport, not an individual sport.

So far we've had the "Names in Jerseys" thread, thus displaying the names on the inside of the jumper making the whole idea seem even worse, and the "updating club theme songs" thread where its been suggested each song should have "YELLOW AND BLACK" put into each clubs song.

Crimminy Jones I say!

huh?

Bloody ridiculous.
it's just a more direct form of identification; really not worth getting upset about.

chin up. :thumbsu:

whether you like it or not, the afl is trying to expand the game and will seek to make the product more available to those new the game. they won't sell the farm in order to do so, but simply removing one barrier that new comers have to understanding/following the game is common sense.

nice rant, mr. sociology professor. :D

Re: Names in Jerseys

If the names were placed on the back of the jumper, the size of the number would have to be smaller (no way the sponsor's logo would be reduced in size).

This would result in making it more difficult to identify players. Names and numbers are fine for soccer, basketball, ice hockey, etc -where they play on surfaces much smaller than ours.

What chance do your "new to the game"ers (or anybody else) have of trying to read the name on a player's jumper or making out the now smaller number from almost 200m away?? If you are sitting in the Ponsford Stand, you are kidding yourself if you think you could read the name of a player in the goal square at the Punt Rd end.

Re: Names in Jerseys

How come the surname of each player isn't written on the back of their respective jersey? Most sports do this. Anyone know why it isn't done in the AFL?

Because as soon as a player changes clubs (or even numbers), your $150 or whatever spent on buying his jumper goes down the drain. Why do you think 'throwback' jerseys are so popular with the American sports?

Also, there seems to be a movement towards getting names of the back of team shirts/jerseys, as exhibited by various NCAA/MLB teams, as well as many national soccer teams, which appears to be from the principle that it's about the name (or badge/colours) on the front of the jersey, not the back.

Hawks have names on training and warm-up jumpers, but never the main strip

Re: Names in Jerseys

Names on uniforms only came about because of TV - the names are too small to see when you are at the live game. Hence large numbers. To respond to the 'It's a team game - don't individualise', why do we have numbers then?

But seeing that probably 90-95% of AFL watching is now done via TV (without access to a Footy record) it's a fair argument. To respond to the 'It's a team game - don't individualise', why do we even have numbers then?

It's a tradition not to have names on the back - I'm not sure it's a worthwhile tradition - as stated it doesn't add anything interesting to the game - it just makes things a bit more difficult for the patrons.

In the US baseball, some teams do have names on the back, some dont (eg Yankees). Is there any reason why an AFL team couldn't decide to do it off their own bat. I guarantee if one team did it, and the AFL didn't object, every team would be doing it within a couple of weeks.

Newcomer: Why did the umpire pay that free-kick ?
Suspense: If you just look at the back of the jumper, you'll see that the player's name is there, that will explain everything.

By the way, how would you feel if you had Leigh Brown's jumper and he jumped ship and joined a fourth club ? You'd look pretty dumb with the new players number, and the old players name hey.

We don't have to do everything they do in other codes you know. There is nothing wrong with being unique.

We have numbers to help out the umpires

.

On TV you have the commentators

this is your argument? really?

well aware but this isn't a case of everyone else does it this way, therefore we ought to (feel free to look up my posts in support of the replayed grand final which ran counter to this exact form of argument)

have either of you ever commented before on an individual's performance in a game?
have you ever utilised the numbers in order to identify said individual?

What does that have to do with anything? The numbers are there ultimately to assist the umpires in their role and the benefit they provide to the viewing public, while beneficial, is incidental. The answer to the question of why numbers are there in the first place is to aid the umpires. Why do local kids basketball and football teams have numbers on their uniforms? Same reason. Why don't local kids cricket teams have numbers on their uniforms? Because it isn't necessary to assist in the adjudication of the game.

Re: Names in Jerseys

I am against it but understand a lot of opinions to have them.
But they are not necessary at all. Have not needed them so why get them?
Space on the bakc of a jumper would become ridiculous and the colours of the jumper would be lost by the dominant colours of the name and number and sponsor. Soccer has sponsors on the front therefor more space on the back unlike the AFL.
Leigh Brown, silly comment if the names were on the jumper and a player moved on, tough luck. But who would have his number and name instead of Swannies?
I agree fans wearing jumers to games, names on the back would be great, they are on warm up tops so why not have this 'option' of names on the back available for fans. Training jumpers and clash should have this option who cares about the extra cost at this stage. I am all for the fans having the opportunity to have names on thier guernseys but the players themselves should not. Numbers are fine and the jumper does not need to be over crowded.
