I suppose i'm just old, stubborn and living in the past. You'd think i'd have learned by now that new is always better than old

Re: Names in Jerseys

How come the surname of each player isn't written on the back of their respective jersey? Most sports do this. Anyone know why it isn't done in the AFL?

Edit: Change the topic name to Names on Jerseys please!

yank bullcrap. stop wanting to change every bloody thing!!!

Re: Names in Jerseys

Made up DOB then?

If 24 is young to you then you're probably at the age where your internet license should have been revoked, BRB calling the authorities.

14 years is a big difference in age these days.

When I was your age we were still using cassette tapes regularly.

When you were born, I was using cassette tapes to load games on my computer.

When I was born computers were ? and TV's were big, wooden and black and white :D

Re: Names in Jerseys

Haha! I remember when cassettes were phasing out in high school and you could get like 3 hit albums for $10 as tapes, but CD's were like $30. I was more than cool with that.
I remember the cassette tapes for computers, the old Commodore 64's? I remember my cousin had one, I was amazed by them. My (own) first computer in 1996 was a 486dx 266 with 8 meg of ram. When I was in primary school (1992?) the Sega Master System II came out and I remember Mum bought me the original Mortal Kombat and it cost her $100+ (was originally from a low socioeconomic area, so that was VERY expensive)

I remember when my Uncle got an Amiga in 1988, and it had a 7 Mhz processor and 512kb of RAM lol. My current computer has a 3.4 Ghz processor and 3.5GB of RAM. I bought it 12 months ago, and it's already past it.

Things change pretty bloody quickly these days.

Re: Names in Jerseys

You pretty much have the same one as my laptop, that won't even play Modern Warfare 2, luckily the game I play mostly is like 400mb and graphically easy.
Is that processor Dualcore or Quadcore?
3.5 gig of ram meaning you have Windows Vista and 4gig of ram.

Dualcore.

This was my fave basketball game in 1985....

And today....

I remember sitting in a mates lounge room playing this on the Atari 2600 in 1984....

I remember saying to him, and my other mates that were there at the time, you know, one day, we'll be playing a soccer game so realistic, you'll have to look twice to make sure it's not a real game. They all laffed at me.

Fast forward to 2011.....

But just to get back to the comment that started this tangent.....

Yes, I like some traditional things, in footy and in life in general. there are certain aesthetics that cannot be replicated by something a little more advanced. Hell, some of the old arcade classics from my childhood still have unlimited playability, and thats even compared to the more technically advanced games.

But geez, I also love to see progression and development. It's like the song recognition app you can get for the iPhone. That is just totally sick to me, and is a contender for the coolest thing i've ever seen :D

So while i'm starting to get up there in age, i'm not an old fuddy duddy who likes everything to stay the same forever :thumbsu:

I've been to over 500 games of league football in my lifetime, and never once have I heard a fan muttering 'Geez, I don't know who player x for Team x is, but geez, if he had his name on the back I would'.

I've never heard a fan muttering 'Geez, I don't know who player x for Team x is, but geez, if he had a big flashing neon sign above his head with his name on it I would' either, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't help. People just don't say something like that out of the blue. Maybe next time try actually asking one of the 'not even casual fans' and see what they say.

Re: Names in Jerseys

It'd be great for clubs
Jersey sales would increase
people might buy a new guersey, instead of continuely wearing their old jersey.

for example, 11 Doughty guerseys would bring in more money to Adelaide instead of people just wearing old 11 McGuinness guerseys because it's just '11'

PS - the biggest winner of this would be Port Adelaide, I think they're the only club who gives their captain #1, so obviously any smart Port fan would just get a #1 guersey and that will be their only jersey because it'll always be a good player in the team

but, if you put names on them fans might buy 1 Cassisi jerseys instead of just sticking with old Tredrea guerseys

pps - I do know I kept on saying guersey and jersey, but they're the same thing, and I think both are actually words with the same meaning :p

Re: Names in Jerseys

"did you see that goal?"
"no, i was too busy reading this book i had to pay $6 for just so i can figure out who has the ball. why don't you just have the name on the friggen jumper?"
"coz soccer is gay."

as i said, it's simply a more direct form of identification. given that the afl's goal at present is expansion (ie. winning over new fans), common sense makes it's introduction inevitable. :thumbsu:

Idiot. The size of an Australian football field is so much bigger than other sports that have names on their backs anyway. As if you can tell who it is by looking at the tiny lettering on their back.

Also - "Oh, player (not sure who you are) who just kicked the goal, can you please turn around so I can see what your name is?"

IT'S A MARKETING TOOL. Soccer would do just fine with just a number too.

And to the struggler pointing out cricket as a reason why to put names on backs - cricket isn't something I'd try to take too much notice of if you're thinking of following someone's lead.

They're having enough trouble trying to identify which of the 32 formats of the game is the way to go forward.

As for numbers on the backs of Sheffield Shield players and ODI - a pathetic waste of time.

Re: Names in Jerseys

Why would AFL clubs use up a part of the guernsey that would make ideal advertising space?

That's the thing about most AFL "traditionalists" ... they'd hardly bat an eyelid if their club turned up sporting a (or should I say yet another) Qantas, Toyota or Vodafone emblem on the club guernsey, yet claim it's sacred territory when something as practical as the player's name enters the argument.

Because sponsorship is integral to ensuring that our clubs survive? How much extra revenue do you think would be made by selling jumpers with names on the back? Nowhere near as much as a sponsor's logo.

"idiot", names on the back are for people who watch games on tv and last time i checked, cameras are zoomed in during games.

all other sports have been down this path and discovered viewer experience is greatly enhanced by names on the back. it certainly wont reduce anyones experience by not having them, thats for sure. great majority of afl viewers dont know every player off every team; what they look like or what their number is. and if afl wants to expand, it will be by firstly drawing in casual viewers and build from there. looking at a match and not knowing who has kicked the ball or just laid that shepherd and all that is extremely frustrating. i dont want commentator telling me, i want to see for myself.

other sports prove this is not so. otherwise why would they do it? people identify easier with names, not numbers. surely you have watched socceroos at least casually and loved to see who Cahill and Kewell are by seeing their names on the back and not some number.

Re: Names in Jerseys

I agree. Totally pointless. I recall back in the 70s my basketball team toured the Philippines and we ended up having the (then) new style basketball singlets made, silk with players' names across the back.

They were great to wear, but running around with my name on the back of the shirt made me feel a bit silly to be honest. It served no purpose whatsoever.

I honestly cannot see any advantage to having names on AFL jumpers, and as someone else said, a wankfest.

Ummm... Etihad stadium?

And yes you can quite clearly read the names on the back, even from level 3. Crawl back into your barrel f***wit

Re: Names in Jerseys

What's the goal keeper's name? I can see he's number 25. Thanks for unexpectedly helping me illustrate my point.

Well it's not exactly HD or TV size..
