toughy this one.

Nas shocked the world in the early 1990's by releasing one of hte most complete socially aware, clever displays of lyricism of all time. all at the age of 19. This pretty much crippled the rest of his career as he never lived up to this famous debut.

Jay-z's aptly named Blueprint came at the pinnacle of his career, his wittiness and realism depicted perfectly also catapulted producers just Blaze and Kanye West into superstardom who are both clearly the two most in demand producers in the world right now.

I have to go with Nasir on this one, the perfect Hiphop album in my eyes.

Maybe Illmatic v Reasonable Doubt would have been a better comparison?

Both these are two brilliant albums, very hard to pick a favourite, I'd say Blueprint though, I just think the album flowed a little better and was longer. Jay-Z sustained his brilliance for a bit longer, but gee, Illmatic was a sensational album too.

See I love Reasonable doubt, but most would say that Blueprint was jigga man's best album, and Illmatic is definitely Nas's best. So I figured we should compare the two.

Apprently at a recent concert in LA, nas said he loved jigga and did a version of ether substituing 50's name in place of jay's fyi.

The Blueprint - just. "We kill you m-f ants with a sledgehammer".

"99 Problems" still Hova's finest moment, though. And one of the great clips.

Good to see Nasir showing love for a quality rapper and bagging the scum like 50.

Have you heard that live version Rick? "F*ck FIF-TEE", would have sounded great :)

Illmatic but only just. Both amazing albums and both are amongst the greatest hihhop albums of all time but Illmatic is just a tad better for me especially NY State of mind and Lifes a Bitch ft Az.

Half time is a dope track as well. I've got the Nas video anthology, he really REALLY fell off between illmatic and stillmatic.

Az never really blew up the way I thought he should have.

Have to go with illmatic as i'm not a fan of jay-z. As for illmatic i think is slightly overrated compared to other releases from the same time.

whilst he did fall off all of his other albums were still listenable none of them were as good but its not like they were shocking.

The Lost Tapes (Not really an album more of a compilation of unreleased songs) is amazing

Intellectually it would have to be Illmatic easily as the value of its impact on rap cannot be denied, and even Jay Z acknowledges it as a "hot album", but personally I prefer to listen to the Blueprint. It's just so much fun.

i too think illmatic and reasonable doubt would have been a better comparison. both "classic" albums.

im with knowledge. the lost tapes is my favourite nas album, amazing because its just a collection of unreleased and b-sides.

those who love illmatic, get hold of the illmatic reissue. amazon link here. remix tracks on this are hot.

HFC, you obviously haven't heard the Blueprint to make a comment like that. There's no way you could say there was that big a margin between the two. Blueprint was excellent.

On Illmatic, my fave track would be life's a bitch, gotta love that solo at the end by Nas' father.
