1.3m a year according to the age. Bloody hell. CPI sure has had an effect on the cost of loyalty

So did the Age sight the contract papers, or did Fyfe or his manager tell them his contract details?
Or "supposedly" or "it is understood" or "sources".
Or just pure guesswork.
Good luck to him, whatever he's on

Good news.... as othes have said nice to see some loyality.
In the age of sporting mercainaries it a refreshing change for a player to stay true to the Club that gave him a start.

Surely makes him a one club player. Not really in any doubt when the players voted him captain, but it's good to have the unnecessary distraction out of the way.

Hmm not sure it's that loyal given the mammoth contract...not sure any other club would be willing to pay much more than that.

That is a huge contract to RE-SIGN your own player...usually the other mammoth contracts we've seen were to POACH a player from another club...like Franklin, Boyd, Ablett, Judd & the supposed offers for Martin and Kelly. Kelly and Martin apparently have offers of around $800k from their current clubs to stay, Selwood is on something like $700k, Roughead on less, Pendlebury on less etc

But to re-sign your own player for over $1.1 million is by far an AFL record...Freo really threw the kitchen sink at keeping Fyfe. TBH imo the fact they needed to give him that much money for him to stay means he isn't THAT loyal, it's not like he's stayed for unders due to the love of the club and so that they could build a better list like some other players/clubs have done.

You do understand the new EBA has given them a 20% payrise yeah? This is first major signing under the new regime.

It's really not far off what Pav and Sandi have been on, with the new agreement it's probably going to be the new norm.

Yeah i do mate and it's a big contract even accounting for the increased salary cap. Not just the money but the length of the contract.
Take away the 20% payrise and it would be equivalent to him getting a contract of almost $900k...still a huge and record amount to re-sign your own player for.

Even Kelly and Martin are allegedly only getting offered around $800k from their current teams and they are both currently better than Fyfe.

Look, good on Freo and i'm sure you're happy he re-signed, but it's a mammoth contract and realistically overs.

We'll see what contracts the likes of Cripps, Ed Curnow, Weitering and SPS sign when they're free agents ;)

I don't want to rain on Freo supporters parade...obviously you're all very excited by the news he's committed and rightly so.

But tbh i wouldn't be happy if we offered even a guy like Cripps that kind of contract...partly because i'd expect him to do the team thing and stay for less to help us build a premiership winning list...like what Hawthorn and Geelong have done over the years. I think Dangerfield, the best player in the comp, is on $800k and Selwood on around the same or slightly less. Don't think any of Hawthorn's players were earning over $700k despite winning 3 premierships in a row and having gun players like Hodge, Mitchell, Burgoyne, Franklin & Roughead.

As mentioned, i think if a club is ever thinking of giving a player a contract of that size, it should at least be to poach a star to improve your list like getting Dustin Martin or Tom Lynch from GC...since it always takes more $$$ to poach a player than it does to re-sign.

Not at all surprised that you don't get the loyalty bit working both ways ... club to player .... player to club.
Carlton don't do it.

To use your speak, in counter, why would you "not " throw the kitchen sink at keeping one of your own !?!?

Because these sort of players underpin the very fabric which Clubs aspire to , they are the sort of moves that inspire both members and the young kids on the list to stay loyal and stay true.

Sometimes it bigger than just the player himself, its a signal to the rest of the football world as to what the Club represent and values.

Consider this .......the value a player holds to a Club is sometimes more than the on the field impact, as the off field Vibe and optimistic attitude he brings to the fan base is worth its weight in gold.

Is it overs ? ...... time will tell.

How are you not getting this?

Hawthorn have already done the "3 vickerys instead of 1 Fyfe" when they targeted numerous B or C graders while building a team that would go on to win 3 flags, instead of trying to bring in 1 superstar.

Other clubs could well choose to put all their eggs in one basket and offer Fyfe the world, but you've really got to stop pretending like clubs deciding to spend less money on more players instead of throwing it all at one player is such a far fetched idea.

3 Vickerys over Nat Fyfe, thats just about the stupidest thing ever written on BigFooty!

Just one more time before you shut this one down, can you tell me how Hawthorn have already done it?
