From the Hun:

NATHAN Ablett has come out of his shell and accepted some informal coaching duties at new QAFL club Broadbeach.

The quietly spoken former Cat has become a big hit at his new Queensland home, thrilling teammates and officials with his involvement and enthusiasm.

Broadbeach development manager Bob Walters said the 23-year-old, who shocked the football world by moving north late last year to pursue a building career, had not put a foot wrong.

"He has settled in wonderfully well and not missed a single training session. Not one," Walters said.

"He is always being seen doing extra training by himself and he has even taken training for the boys on a couple of nights.

"He's been terrific."

The 196cm key forward played 32 AFL games and kicked 46 goals before walking out on the Cats in November 2007.

Ablett did not have the passion to continue his AFL career and appeared uncomfortable with the demands and attention of top-flight football.

Wonder where he is now? Back home? Still building?
Definitely the one that got away that I am most annoyed about losing since I've been a Cat fan (since 1963)

Playing with Modewarre in the BFL isn't he? At least he was last year.

Does it really matter any more?
Does anything really matter anymore, if you're getting philosophical?
It's a Nathan Ablett thread that was attached to our board.
If he has continued with his faith and has peace of mind, fantastic.

Here's a Nathan Ablett story...

Once upon a time, there was a horse called Nathan Ablett.
He bolted, and then the stable door was closed.
The End.

Deep MM, very deep.

Throw in about 8 injured who sat out, of which Ablett, Harris, Dickson, Walters, Lyons and Zorko would be walk-up starts in any game (apologies if we have missed any), and we are looking good for depth.
Gee that Zorko bloke might have some potential. Shame if Gold Coast were to miss him.

I agree....we should leave the guy in peace....

As far as football is concerned, the Nathan Ablett story was complete virtually a decade ago.

The thread probably should have been closed....and will be in due course.

Fev for mine by a comfortable margin

Fev had plenty of tricks as a key forward, I admit. But that's about as far as his attributes were ever going to take him.

Whereas Nath probably had a shot at a career as a KPF, a KPD, a roaming flanker/wingman or even a ruck-rover.

He really was phenomenally gifted with his athletic prowess, his marking ability and his sublime kicking skills off either foot.

Seriously could have been anything, with even half the application that Gaz ended up bringing to his own career.

Still, all entirely his choice to walk away. And nobody can begrudge him the autonomy to choose whether footy mattered enough to him to pursue a long-term career.

In the end, I'm just incredibly grateful to have seen him play (and shine) at the highest level. And to see the brothers playing together in the '07 flag team will always be a treasured memory of mine.

"Don't be sad that it's over. Be glad that it happened."

If he wasn't happy playing at the highest level then he did the correct thing by leaving. Mental Health is a important and prominent issue, maybe he just saw the AFL way of life wasn't good for him or was something he needed.

Anyway, he helped us win our first flag since 1963. His AFL career with us will never be forgotten.

The only caveat on all that is his time at Gold Coast. I assume Nathan was paid a reasonable wage to be part of the Gold Coast list just to act as a lure to help get GAJ there. Surely he wasn't that naive to believe Gold Coast really wanted him on there list?

He was training with us for a fair bit before then and had an ankle injury which flared up again in his time with GC from memory

He had so much talent it wasn’t funny
