Nathan Ablett

I still reckon he needs more time. This year to establish himself in the seniors, next to break out and show us what he's really made of.....

who knows what he will be...but henry and charlie are two players that have been given like 4-5 years and nathan is in his 3rd season.

That's what annoys me - by the same rationale half the guys on our list wouldn't be there. Playfair, Gardiner, McCarthy are just 3 supreme duds we've shown an enormous amount of patience in. In terms of ability Nathan Ablett blows all 3 away. I agree he shouldn't be given senior games indefinitely without producing but I still think he warrants a tiny amount of latitude.

What about Mackie? This is his 5th year at Geelong and only last season did he start to display something.

big guys take a while to develop, he is doing really well atm..
give him 3 or 4 years and he will be the new Lloyd/Hall

This idiotic attitude is the reason Nathan never wanted to play AFL in the first place, and had to literally get talked into it.

He didn't want to play AFL because he thought he might turn into Barry Hall ? Who can blame the kid!

No... :( The expectations from fans like yourself. He knows he won't be able to live up to them, which makes him obviously feel like he is doomed to dissapoint people... Get it?

Are you kidding me... that has nothing to do with why he did not want to play. He didn't want to play because of the media and people getting up in his face, i highly doubt it was because of expectations. I also think that part of it was because he just did not have the passion that he thought was needed to play AFL.

Why do you think the media would be in his face??? Obviously because his name ends with Ablett, and he would be expected to perform likewise... Geezzz... read between the lines... Think a bit before you reply..

Exactly although he wouldn't be expected to just come in and perform. It's more the surname then the fear of not performing. Also the fact is that he didnt really have the desire to play football more then anything. If he really wanted to play footy he wouldnt budge about joining the club and wouldnt worry about the media, just like his brother did.

I totally agree, and this is the reason he will never become a champion of the game.

clearly you didnt read the interview with him where he said hes still learning about team structure on the field etc. this is where its harder for him not coming thru a system. he used to just go out and run around, now he actually has to do specific things.

he will learn eventually.

Why does he have to become a CHAMPION or a SUPERSTAR? Why cant he become a servicable player who plays out a non spectacular career in the AFL?

Can one of these doubters give us something of substance...
Who could have we taken in the draft instead?
During the NAB cup who should have played instead?

So much negativity but no substance or ideas.

I have never said that Nathan is a dud, or anything similar. I still believe that the guy will NOT be a champion of the game. Too many idiots on here start crying whenever you mention the name 'Ablett' in any type of negative sense. I don't see him as being any different to any other player, and so far he hasn't shown much AT ALL.

You can make all the excuses you like for him but the fact of the matter is, if you think he's gonna be some big star of the game your kidding yourself. He's the kind of player who isn't talented enough to become exceptional without working hard, and to put it simply, he doesn't give a $hit anyway...

Bookmarked ! Your a very hard man,he's only just turned 20,has only really been in the system since he joined the club (3yrs). But still shows far more than Playfair, who was going tobe the gun CHF.
You tend to be very critical each time you post ,and you are entitled to your opinion, but I think you'll find the kid does give a $hit and is working very hard to become a very good player for the club.
Stop bagging the kid and move on.

Yes!! I'm glad it's bookmarked, feel free to tell me I'm right in the future when he doesn't become an 'exceptional' player.

I don't consider myself critical, realistic yes. Stop comparing him with Playfair too. Anyone matches up well against that butter cake. Nathan is 22 this year and needs to show something to even be in our best 22. 3 NAB games, 1 goal 2 behinds... not good enough.

"Would be good to see him given the opportunity to play AFL. It is a joke that GFC persist with players that have had ample opportunity (i.e Charlie & H) and don't deserve to be there."

Nablett kicking accuracy has been absolute crap this year with the stats not counting posters bouncing back into play and a couple of strays as well. Inaccuracy at catland is contagious and kent leaving should have seen it improving

martyk, i'd think most supporters would simply be happy with a couple of goals/goal assists a week. Anyway, according to the 'experts' there are something like 500 'stars' in the competition. Like scottydeewah said, servicable, that'll do me.

I'm totally with you, although there are plenty of people on this thread claiming otherwise. Go back through and have a read... they have all stopped posting now... hmmm funny that.

Serviceable so we can plod along and not win a premiership for another 44 years... Hmm... Personally, I want to see more than mediocrity. The romanticism attached to the Ablett name won't do me. I want flags, and if NAblett can't stand up and show us that he will be a gun, then I see no room for him - no matter what his name.

So how are we going to get a team with 22 superstar "guns" in it? Maybe if we spent 11 years not winning a game we could get 22 top 5 picks. Then if we could get all of them to live up to their potential and....

You guys coming out and saying he wont be a "gun" has as much credibility as those saying he will. I think that most balanced people would only go as far as saying "it could go either way" - anything more than that is just being stupid.

To be completely honest I'm still unsure. At times he looks very classy, his ability at ground level for a big guy is very good and he's looking much faster and fitter. But you're right, he doesn't deserve endless chances. I think around round 5-6 we'll know more.

Could go either way at this stage. On pure talent he can make it. Whether all the other ingredients are there we just don't know yet.

Lots of 'IFs' involved. We've just got to wait and see what he does. Obviously though, he needs to improve if he wants to keep his spot. He has time on his side though.

Good game from NA today.Hopefully the form continues. :thumbsu:

Agreed, he did ok, couple of things he can improve on, but decent start, was spewing when he dropped a sitter and the Dogs ran it out and scored, but otherwise I can't complain.
