Where is he at?! Since his great game against WB, he has been struggling as a forward. He is back to the Bock of old, dropping simple marks. He gives you a contest when the ball is in the vicinity but in recent weeks he has just been a tall body and are not getting anywhere near enough out of him.

We are also playing a tall short in the backline and it was only a matter of time we got exposed. When you are forced to play Martin Mattner on Travis Cloke, thats a sign of serious trouble.

I think its time Bock got back to CHB and got involved into the game more. Bring in McGregor, plant him in the goal square as the stay at home forward, play Sarge as a lead up, pack busting CHF, and give Stevens the licence to roam and have Welsh as the leading forward out of the goal square.

To me Bock is really struggling and IMHO, he plays his best football at CHB where he is strong enough and athletic enough to match up on most forwards and he does have that rebounding ability.

Thoughts?

He is just struggling at the minute, and having the prime view of the forward line that I had, delivery was very poor to him. Again. Players are popping it into the air for him when he's got a quality defender right on his hammer.

Absolutely - I referred to this in another thread. We have been lucky till now with the shorter defence, but sides will wake up and play more talls. Imagine tonights backline against Hawthorn the way they went today. I feel for Marty Mattner atm - doubt he knows whether he is Arthur or Martha. But an extra tall takes the pressure off him and Bassett.

See the 25 tonnes of tape on his legs. Obviously carrying and injury.

But hey, who isn't right?

Completely out of form & i thought a straight swap for Rutton in the last quater might have been worth a go.

As Stiffy said one decent game this year is just not good enough but like a few other guys playing at the moment we just don't have very many options to replace them.

I agree - see a few other threads where i have mentioned this.

"he plays his best football at CHB where he is strong enough and athletic enough "?????

He is spent after the first 4 - 5 minutes of each quarter. Can't run, struggles to chase his opponent when the ball is turned over and put any form of significant forward line pressure on the opposition to try to keep the ball in the area.

To be brutally honest you have to look at his oppoaition in that really good game against the Bulldogs. Their backline was ordinary at best.

That looks a winner to me. As our injured players return, it's about time we started returning players to the positions they are most suited too.

IMO he is our firts choice CHF. The problem is at the moment he is struggling with a couple of injuries. He looks about as flexible as a power pole at the moment.

I think this is a fairer judgement of Bocky at the moment.

You don't lose ability that quickly unless you're injured. I've been noting that lack of flexibility for the last couple of weeks minimum.

You have to wonder how his back is at the moment as he's not bending very well at all.

If his back is giving him trouble and we can't really give him time off because there is no one that can come in and replace him, why not move him back to CHB where his back will not take as much of a pounding as it does playing as a forward?

If that is the case plus injuries to most of the squad "is" the training cycle having too much of an impact on players durability ??

or is tanking such a nasty word after all ??

Playing a bit sore. But at best he has the turning circle of the queen Mary.

Perrie and Bock's inability to win the ball if they don't mark or atleast create a 50-50 opportunity for our forward line is by far the biggest issue for our forward line.

Would suggest he tries marking with his hands ala AFL football rather than his chest ala primary school football

People are forgetting that Bock aint racked up alot of games in his time.

Not many at CHF either.

Dropped a few marks yesterday but I think he's developing much like hentchel was.

A few defenders and midfielders made some blues yesterday with the most heavtiest penalty.

He looked ****ed last night - I love the bloke (good WW Torrens boy), but he just looked knackered; unfit and proppy.

I do agree with one thing though - a forward line with Perrie/Stevens/Bock is a waste of time, especially the structure we had last night.

If Bock isn't fit, sit him in the goalsquare.

Get Perrie up around the CHF/Centre position.

Stevens a leading forward I guess.

But, for christ sakes, either Bock, Stevens or McGregor need to be in the backline - Mattner is not a tall defender, why are we playing him as one? Put him on the wing, let him use his left foot and get him attacking again.

I feel like Craig is trying to prove a point with Mattner, yet is hurting the team in the meantime, and is ruining Mattner as an attacking player.

Classic case of the turning circle was when he led out to mark - maybe his only one for the night, then played on and ran the full semi-circle to pass to Welsh - who did goal from it!

Spot on......:thumbsu:

Not much to add to this. I think Bassett's footy is also starting to suffer having to take on that #2 tall defender role. Bassett has blossomed since Rutten came into the side - but without another big body back their - Bassett's run is being dried up.

Most concerning for me is the dismatling of Mattner's career. He is an exciting line breaking runner - but his creativity is being stiffled by his current role.....3rd tall defender.... ......give me a break.

Marty needs to return to a wing....HBF at worst. His confidence in his own ability is being shot to pieces ATM.

Once again....we need to look at middle-tall utility types like Embley and Hunter imo.

Perries our CHF (IMO). Workhorse who leads up the ground well, can take a contested pack mark or at the very least bring the ball to ground (where are are crumbers, has Craigy heard of them).

Also prefer to see Sarge kicking from further out where he can put his leg right through the ball rather than tighten up and poke at it from 20m.
