I know we have had this thread before but that was before Thorton wanted to go. I thought he was too slow but now his got the 3rd best 20m time i really hope we grab him at pick 17 or 19.

if we dont get him i will crack it. with the speed, height(194cm i think) and hes an AA FB i dont see how we can pass him up. we lack defenders and hes a gem

We should definitely get him. This is what I think we should do, assuming we get pick 24 for Thornton:

1)Gibbs
17)O'Brien
19)Brown
24)Renouf
35)Houlihan
51)Who knows who will still be available? Impossible to tell.

Of course, I do not think that we will only get pick 24 for Thornton. Whether we get 15 or 33 is unknown, or if we get anything else at all, but those are the 2 most probable outcomes.

With that draft we will have done very well: 3 midfielders (well, 2 really and 1 half back), 1 ruckman and 1 tall defender. Would be an excellent draft for us.

Not sure if it helps much but here is his description from Snoop Dog in the phantom draft

Collingwood selects - N.Brown
Nth Ballarat - 194cm, 89kg

This was a really tough call bc there is a player I had my heart set on but I just did not think this bloke would fall this far. I was certain the Doggies would have taken him and fear he wont fall any further.

What I like about this bloke is he is hard at it and holds his feet really well in a marking contest. Mostly plays back but can also go fwd as he did this weekend to kick a few and could genuinely develop into a player anywhere up the spine. Real nice left kick. Shows good vision and just has that Morwood look of 'coolness' and will not shirk a contest.

Was selected in the All Australian Side at FB and was voted state MVP. Saw him in the final and he was one of their best on a very wet day that did not suit the big lads.

No, just loading it up with young talent. What's wrong with Brown, Renouf and Houlihan?

Nothing mate, i rate those guys, just on bit of a pace obsession at the moment, and i dont' want to pay over the odds for speculative talls, we can speculate on plenty later int he draft IMO......Hamspson, Jacobs, Faulks, Goldstein, etc...

#1 - Correct
#17 - Would prefer Connors or Armiatge
#19 - Correct
#24 - Correct
#35 - Best available mid, perhaps Boak or Grigg
#51 - Best available

Gettting pace is good, but we need to make sure we have all positions on the ground covered first. Who is going to play FB? Harts I hope will be fit enough to do it, but if his body breaks down again, we are screwed. Brown can even play CHB if required. Imagine a backline of this.

FB: O'hAilpin Hartlett O'Brien
CHB: Bower Brown Scotland

Boy, I would love to see that, and IMO that is what we should be looking for.

Re: Houlihan, he has pace! Pace, agility and stamina. We should definitely look at him. If we get a pick between 35 and 51 during trade week that would be ideal, because I think 35 is a bit too soon to pick him, and by pick 51 he will most probably be gone.

I like this even better

1st half of season
B: Carrazzo O'hAilpin Polak
HB: Walker Whitnall Lappin

with Hartlett and Bower playing off the bench

2nd half of season
B: Carrazzo Hartlett O'hAilpin
HB: Polak Bower Lappin

Whitnall to go up forward rotating with Kennedy at CHF
Walker to rotate through the midfield with Murphy, Gibbs and co.

Carrazzo should be played more in the midfield or as a defensive forward. IMO, his days as a back pocket are over, he is far more valuable elsewhere.

That 1st backline would get pummelled from pillar to post every single week. Setanta simply cannot take the FB role, he will ge smashed, not only proving detrimental to the team but also his confidence. Walker should be played in the middle ALL SEASON LONG, no more of him in the backline.

The 2nd backline is much better, but:
-Carrazzo won't be in the back pocket. ayou can replace him with O'Brien
-Bower will no way be ready to play CHB. More a half back flanker. Maybe when his body fills out and he gains more experience he will be played at CHB, but definitely not for a few more years.
-I don't really want Polak either. I think he will be dealt in trade week anyway, and I hope we don't trade for him. I wouldn't really object to getting him in the PSD, but I don't think he will last. He has problems, and we don't really want that at the club. How quickly we forget...
--Much prefer Lappin playing up forward, on a wing, or coming off the bench. Let him use his creativity somewhere else.

The forward line of:

Setanta Harts O'Brien
Bower Brown Scotland

Still looks the best to me. We have 3 genuine talls, 1 medium sized, 1 small, and 1 runner who will always push into the midfield. An ideal setup.

Gee mate your optimistic playing 5 players who havent proved themselves and i don't know how they would go against the Dogs.

Yep, I know that, but I think that if they are given a go early in the season, they will feel comfortable enough at the end of the season toline up this way.

We need to develop the kids, and that's what we will do. Would love to see that backline at some stage during the season.

I'd put Sentanta at centre half back and Nathan Brown in a pocket as Nathan is still young and wouldn't have filled out enough to play at centre half back yet. He is also better playing in the last line of defence. I still think whitnall should play in defence next year though.

We've got a bloke who's perfect for Full Back on our list already. His name is Jake Edwards.

His best assets are his his pace off the mark and overhead judgement. He's 191cm and getting taller and he's got a much better frame on him than Thornton ever had.

I'm not saying he should play Full Back in the seniors, but I think it'd be a good idea to play him there all year in the VFL. He hasn't got a position at the moment anyway, so it's not like you'll be stifling his development.

If I where coaching I'd rotate Bower, O'hAilpin and Waite on the talls in defence depending upon the match up. Whitnall and Kennedy rotating from CHF to Forward Pocket with Fish pushing up into the mid-field off a flank creating space. Having Whitnall and Kennedy constantly switching would cause confusion in the back-line and would likely draw the player standing in Fev's leading space to become accountable for Kennedy or Whitnall.

You could also switch Waite and Whitnall with few problems
