Residents of the Cattery,

Well done. This is a win-win-win situation for the Cats, Buckley and the Devils.

As a sneaky aside - don’t be surprised if the cats pick up Mason Cox on a 1 year deal during the pre-season.

Regards

S. Pete

Cox has been discussed here. Does Bucks have a great relationship with him?

And is your Cox just that a wisp in the wind or do you have solid reason for the thought?

Genuine question ..

Go Catters

Bucks has a very strong relationship with Mason.

It is just a wisp in the wind but I think Cox gives you guys great cover in the ruck/tall forward area and even if he spends a year in the VFL his development pathway has been very different to others and that is likely to add just a different aspect to leadership and supporting those who are facing challenges cracking in to the AFL team - imagine the perspective he can give, given he has probably had it harder than almost any player to have ever played the game.

Yea he’s American and brings that arrogance and brashness that pisses us all off, but what he has achieved is nothing short of incredible.

Makes a lot of sense actually. Would not be against it at all. Either Mason OR Goldy as support for a year until we have another crack at Marshall OR until Conway or Edwards are ready/able to take over.

No real surprises with his revelation. I guess it tells us (a) he must think he is doing a decent job at Geelong; and (b) he wants to 'officially' get in at the Devils before someone / anyone else does.

The Cats hierarchy must now ensure he doesn't get too friendly with any of our players

Why?

If we look at assistant coaches who've spent more than 6 months at the club over the past decade before moving on to be senior coaches of even assistant coaches elsewhere - how many have had players follow them to their new clubs?

Shaun Grigg to GC, James Rahily to Adelaide, Shane O'Bree (National Recruitment Manager at Collingwood), Steven King to Melbourne etc, and I'm sure there's names I've missed - I can't think of too many if any players who've opted to move to those clubs following their appointments

I don't see why it would be any real difference this time - just want to see him doing the best thing for the GFC & our players while he's with us

Difference is (i) we hired Buckley knowing he was No.1 man for the Devil's job (ii) the AFL will have a bucket of money available for the Devils to lure players from other clubs, and (iii) if I was Buckley and had exposure to emerging talent or stars coming out of contract at Geelong...

Although I wasn't as into the footy as I am now I remember as a kid feeling betrayed - yeah betrayed! - when Tommy Hafey abandoned us and went to Sydney with Greg Williams and Bernard Toohey.

Of course the reality was he never really took to life down in Geelong and I think he was at odds with his lot down there. But as a kid I was outraged that he left and took players with him!

Buckley better keep his mitts to himself!

Tassie are allowed to take a Geelong player (contracted or not) without compensation.

I think this is a bit of an overreaction, to be honest. We took him on for a year knowing he would take the Tassie job once that boat was floated; we can't suddenly turn around and say, oh no....

I'm not saying that at all. As you say we took him on knowing he was No.1 coaching candidate for Tassie. All I said was that we shouldn't let him get too friendly with players. It was more a quip but with an ounce of truth behind it. We knew that risk and we cannot be surprised if we lose anyone.

I must I wasn't convinced Buckley would get the nod at the Devils particularly when you had the likes of Longmuir, Hinkley and Simpson - all more successful recent coaches - available.
