Nathan Buckley didn't want the office in the back corner, he wanted to be front and square. He wanted to be able to see the players in the gym from his desk.

A new door was also installed at Buckley's request to make it easier for the players to access coaches.

Under Buckley's direction, the players were pushed to a level they hadn't experienced. It was another statement from the new coach and gave an insight into his thoughts about the state of fitness from the previous season.

While Malthouse's public image is of a hard-nosed leader, there was a sense inside the club he'd gone soft on his players.

Given his intense personality, there were concerns his perfectionist way would be an issue, but players are enjoying his hands-on approach and delegation of responsibility their way.

"If you were comparing the two of them, Bucks is more of a teacher coach whereas Mick was very much a motivator," was how one insider described the set-up.

"Bucks figures you bring your own motivation. He says, 'I shouldn't have to motivate you, you should be motivated enough to do this every day' so he's more about teaching and structure."

God I love this man, and this is why I always wanted someone like him as coach.

Ed my sentiments exactely, this is why i know Buckley will not only bring us sustained premiership success but will be an innovator of our great game and more importantly be ahead of the competition when it cones to tatics and game structures. But he needs a team that can exexcute the game plans. That takes time!

Not all players can,so along the way we may have a dropp off of players but once he has team balance right, just try and catch us !!!!!!!!

Too early to call obviously. It's very easy to get swept away in the romanticism of Bucks being the coach, but fact is, we don't know how the players will respond yet.

We can only go on what we've seen so far, and what we read, like the article above.

So far, I'm optimistic about the season ahead. I love love LOVE reading things like "I expect players to motivate themselves".

This was a BIG issue for us I thought under Malthouse. I don't like that he always had to get the players 'up'. We are Collingwood for f**ks sake. These guys get to play for the best club in the land in front of 60 plus every week with the most passionate supporter base going around.

They get to train with the best facilities, and have all they could want at their disposal.

That should all be motivation enough goddamit. We shouldn't need an almost 60 year old coach finding ways to get these guys 'up' every week. Professionals should be able to do that themselves, like Geelong does.

That's how you develop a culture of ruthlessness. Which is something I think we sorely need.

I still have to look twice when I see Buckley in the paper as coach , have a bit of a chuckle , I love it . I went to his first game for the pies at VicPark in a practice match vs Stkilda ( I think ) and went to his last at the G vs cats PF 07 and only missed interstate matches in between , met him out and about back in the day and you couldn't meet a nicer bloke , really listened to what you had to say . I want another flag for me and my magpie family and I want that other flag for Bucks .
P.S. that's the most I've typed since school 20 years ago!

Its good to see they have different styles...otherwise what was the point? It'll either be great or fail dismally. I still think coaches need to be motivating, all great leaders are. Humans aren't robots, they're people with emotions and feelings and I think over time Buckley will develop the motivational skills, just like he did as a captain.
