Re: Nathan Carroll

I don't think he's much - and lost the plot at more than one of his farcical efforts last Saturday night - but you've got to admit the coaching staff buried him. He gets picked because he beat Hall a couple of years back and when the game starts he's sitting on the bench, and only ends up on Hall six goals later via a complete mismatch against O'Loughlin.

I'm prepared to give him more chances. L. Williams on the other hand is OUT.

Re: Nathan Carroll

doesnt have enough skill simple enough. he has a decently sized body but wats the point when oloughlin (no stick but no tank either) can give you a little bump and you completly fall over. pleading to the umpire afterwards aint gunna hurt either.

i just feel dat carroll aint a finals winning defender while fergeson and rivers could turn into that. still leaves us 1 tall short. what are dunn bate and newton like in the bulk department? they are all about rivers size so dat aint perfect but if they bulk up and know how to play they could be a decent FB. also at 17 they could put on another inch or so maybe? like kosi

If you had told me that Nathan "Even big borther Trent's better than me" Carroll was going to play on Pav for 3 1/2 quarters, then I would mark Pav down for at least 6 goals and 10 marks, even in the wet. He only took 1 mark and I'm pretty sure at least 2 of his 3 goals were crumbing goals.

So unless Pav was used as a decoy yesterday to allow McPharlin to get the goals, it was a very good game by him. Carroll just seemed to play close to him all day and kept him much quieter than we'd hoped. Probably the first win we've had in which Pav probably won't poll any Brownlow votes.

Exactly, to his credit he had a good game. Although Pavlich got 3 goals, he only took 1 mark and given he is the competitions leading mark taker, it was a great effort. That gutsy mark towards the end of the match was good to see, maybe there is a future for Carroll after all. His next test will be next week against one of the Saints big guns, Gehrig, Riewoldt or Koschitzke.

carroll does a good job because he is not unnaccountable like our other defenders at times. he is always within a metre of his opponent. he will get beaten in 1 on 1s sometimes but atleast his opponent wont get many uncontested possessions

Carrol has one attrubute unique to him as a defender at Melbourne, accountability.

A defender with a willingness to sacrafice his own game to limit the effectivness of the oppositions most dangerous forward is an absolute must for a backline as free wheeling as ours.

Carrol also seems to have some aggression and the ability to get under the skin of opposition forwards. We need some mongel, maybe he can provide it. With Rivers out for a month we should get a good look at Nathan.

One of those players unable to take the next step I guess. He has played well at VFL level and is a consistant defender. I wonder if we had played him more, he would have grown into a defender. No one at the club really seems to be taking defence seriously. Either we chuck in Nicholson who dour but hasn't any speed, Bizzel who is a great player but not really a tall defensive player and ferguson who is another player used sparingly.

I thought defences were supposed to be built around a tight unit rather than just plugged up. It is why I wonder who is thinking long term at Demonland. River's is the only real true talent we have seen brought into the defence.

Our attack is too predictable as well. I rate Miller as a player but he doesn't kick enough goals to make CHF viable. Neil has to find a centre half forward and move Millar back. Find a ruck and move White forward and take a punt on someone like Smith.

At least Chriss Johnson, 14 possesions in his second game showed real promise.

chris johnson looked very quick. was this guys speed rated highly pre draft? cos he looked damm quick in the wet.

carroll vs gerhig maybe? nicho aint got the mongrel to cope with a guy like carroll

also carroll does seem to have guts and that incident where rivers unfortuantly broke his wrist/hand shows dat

If our season has died in the arse like it seems to have I'm happy to have him down there for the next few weeks to see what he can do. Like I said in another thread he instantly looked better against Sydney when they took him off O'Loughlin and put him on Hall.

Call me harsh but there's some rabble on our list that needs getting rid of. I'm not going to name name's but it's what needs to happen before we are rated as a premiership contender.

I think nathan carroll is starting to show some potential. hes couragous. Ferg is a better backman at the moment but carroll has the body to go with the stronger fowards. He is getting old but id give him a couple more years.

carroll and nicho are only 2 big body defenders (though they aint huge) and carroll is probably ahead of nicho. nicho has this saturday to proove himself though

end of the year it will probably either be nicho and carroll or just nicho on our list. i cant see em dropping nicho much to the displeasure of many on this board.

also it depends on whether we go after a guy like Hay who i reckon would benifit this team immensly
