Midfielder Nathan Freeman has encountered a setback as he chases a long awaited AFL debut.

The 23-year-old reported hamstring soreness during a session last Friday, and is expected to miss a short period of training.

General Manager of Football Simon Lethlean said that while the injury appeared relatively minor, the club was exploring all options, including minor surgery to clean up scar tissue.

“Nathan has done a huge amount of work with our medicos and conditioning team over the summer to reach the level needed to play AFL football.”

“Friday’s injury, while relatively minor, suggests there could be an underlying issue with scar tissue that is preventing him from reaching his full capacity.

“Nathan will consult a specialist this week, but regardless of whether surgery is the preferred option, the recovery period is expected to be the same as a conventional rehab program.

“It’s hoped he will only miss a few weeks of work on the track, where after he can then find a level of continuity with training and playing games that creates a platform to push for AFL selection.”

In November, Freeman self funded a return to Germany to see renowned expert Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt for the second time.

“Nathan is clearly a resilient young man, and has done everything possible to get his body right,” Lethlean said.

“Despite this setback, he remains focused on doing all he can to reach full fitness and as a club, and playing group, we’re right behind him.”

Can’t wait for 2018 season.

ST KILDA have confirmed Nathan Freeman's wretched luck has continued, with the youngster needing more hamstring surgery.

The 22-year-old suffered his latest injury at training last week and the operation means another extended break from playing.

"He won't be running for about four weeks and then from that point there he will need to work into fitness so it could be about round four or five before he comes back in the VFL," Finnis told SEN radio on Wednesday night.

Freeman managed 13 games in the VFL last year before an ankle injury ended his season early.

Collingwood recruited him with the No.10 pick in the 2013 draft and he was traded to the Saints two years later. He is yet to make his AFL debut and his contract expires at the end of this season.

Before last week's injury, the Saints had been upbeat about his pre-season progress.

St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman is on track to return from right hamstring surgery through the VFL on Saturday afternoon.

The 22-year-old just needs to continue training well to face Box Hill at Box Hill City Oval.

Freeman was operated on in February, when a defect was found in his muscle.

He was ready to play his first game of the year last week, but a bye for Sandringham meant the former Magpie was confined to training.

The powerful runner flew to Germany at the end of both 2016 and 2017 in a bid to sort out the problem that has kept him from making his debut since he was drafted with the 10th selection in 2013.

He managed 13 matches in the VFL last year and was performing well enough to be in the frame for his first senior game.

However, a right ankle syndesmosis injury last July ended his season prematurely.

He was brought to the Saints for his elite speed and endurance while his professionalism and positive attitude through adversity have impressed the club.

LUCKLESS St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman made a stunning return from right hamstring surgery on Saturday afternoon, racking up 31 disposals in Sandringham's 64-point loss to Box Hill.

Freeman played as an onballer for much the contest at Box Hill City Oval and had seven marks and four tackles.

He didn't appear to have any problems with his troublesome hamstrings.

The 22-year-old's kicking was a touch scrappy at times but a couple of instances in particular would have impressed the Saints hierarchy watching on, which included coach Alan Richardson and football manager Simon Lethlean.

One play saw him burst free of a tackle from deep in defence and show the speed he was recruited from Collingwood for while another instance saw him hold on to an overhead mark with Hawks ruckman Marc Pittonet coming in to create a contest.

St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman has "the utmost confidence" his troublesome hamstrings will hold up as he presses his case for senior selection.

Freeman had right hamstring surgery in February, but his rehab has gone as planned and he notched up 31 disposals in Sandringham's 64-point loss to Box Hill last Saturday.

Having been through the process of healing his body on multiple occasions means the 22-year-old believes he knows how to get himself right.

"(With) the sum of all the rehabs that I've done, mentally I know what works now and physically I know what works. We've got the utmost confidence in my body and my skills," Freeman told reporters at RSEA Park on Monday morning.

"I've just got so much confidence in myself now."

That match against the Hawks was his first since July last season when a right ankle syndesmosis injury ended his campaign as he pushed to make his senior debut.

Get your Halo On for 2018

He was drafted by Collingwood at No.10 in 2013 before being traded at the end of 2015 for a second-round selection the following year, along with a swap of picks in the 60s, but is yet to play an AFL game.

"It was obviously a good feeling, not playing for so long and getting through unscathed and playing a full game," Freeman said.

"Just a credit to the coaches and fitness staff for getting me into the shape that I am and giving me the confidence to run out games now. I don't really think about it too much any more."

Freeman sees himself in a battle with numerous teammates trying to make the AFL side.

"I'm like any other player now, we're sort of putting pressure (for) spots on the AFL boys. That's all we can do, is keep playing well," Freeman said.

However, St Kilda football manager Simon Lethlean told Melbourne radio station SEN the former Magpie would stay in the VFL for a little while yet.

"Nathan Freeman got back last week, which was great for him, but he'd be a few weeks away still," Lethlean said.

We’re officially back on Freeza Watch, as Nathan Freeman played his first game back since injuring his AC joint and showed no signs of soreness.

The talented midfielder picked up 28 touches and laid four tackles for the Zebras as he continues to chase his long-awaited AFL debut.

Hamill says - Nathan Freeman 13 kicks, 10 handballs, 7 marks, 5 tackles

I don’t think 'Freeza' is too far off. He’s got a lot of confidence in his ability now, and more importantly, in his body. He’s gone through a hell of a lot for a young man and we hope he gets his opportunity at some stage, but his defensive spread and work-rate is certainly improving, and there’s lots of footy still to come.

Nathan had 30 disposals for Sandy against Richmond. He must be a chance to debut for the Saints soon you would think.
He also kicked a goal . Maybe they might play him against the Bulldogs in two weeks so it’s at home to try get a bigger crowd.

Nathan Freeman has endured as difficult a start to his AFL career as anyone, with unrelenting injury issues sidelining the talented midfielder for over four seasons.

But ‘Freeza’ is finally gaining continuity in his football, and if he can recapture his most dangerous asset – his explosive ability from stoppage – then a 2018 debut looks very likely.

Hamill says -
Nathan Freeman 20 kicks, 17 handballs, 13 marks, 0 tackles

Everyone’s on Freeza watch, myself included. I’ve worked closely with Nathan over a couple of years, and no-one would be prouder to see him get a game than myself. He had a really good influence on the game. He didn’t lay a tackle, so defensively let himself down a little bit there, but in terms of ball use, he played wing and had 32 uncontested, so his outside game’s really good. We’re yet to have match committee, but certainly, he’ll be discussed.

Nathan Freeman put together another high-possession game, this time amassing 37 disposals in an influential display for the Zebras at VFL level.

If selected, his inclusion would mark the end of a 5-year-long wait for a taste of senior football, and the resilient 23-year-old will be desperate for his chance at the big-time.
