If they are thinking about re-signing thinking any of Freeman, Goddard, Pierce or Connellan they should get at least one game before the end of the season to show/remind them of the difference between VFL and AFL.

5 and a supp isn't the same as 6 numbers.

No deal.

My game - my rules :)
Yeah. Crap attempt by Keg on legs :p
Hit the post from 50 for a point but no goal.

Classic Saints move of "we can see what you were trying to do".

Facts are the problem started when Steven was the only one drafted who is still at the club from a 4 year period. Anyone blaming the Coach today watches it with that much bias that people should just ignore

I did a bit of an add up of the picks we used in the period of drafting on another thread a while back. Lyon's strategy of using high picks for players like Lovett and Brett Peake cost us access to the draft. Most years Peake was working with one pick at the end of the first round and then nothing until the 40s and 50s. This year will be close to how we drafted in those years but we have much higher first rounder.

"The simple strategy was an aim to draft midfielders specifically. We wanted them to be speed endurance athletes with a quality kick, but most importantly we wanted them to have the ability to go through the midfield to add pace to group ball winning.”

Picks a flanker with the first pick and the last pick. Crocker a good kick but that was about it. Ledger did everything well except kick.

What a god awful draft. What makes it even worse is that it's better than our 2009 draft. And arguably our 2012 draft.

Dreadful times and years in the drafting wilderness.

Brett Peake was swapped for Pick 48.

Also I doubt is was just Lyon who was picking the players. GT was given the flick for amongst other issues wanting too much control, and so I doubt that Lyon would have have had carte blanche.

We had our second picks in the 40s and 50s and wasted the ones we did have on players like Nick Winmar sy=till.

The rot started with Watts and Brookes...
.really bad luck on both counts, VDS666. Watts had a shocking, ankle break that ended his career. Had some ability. Typical saints' luck. Barry Brooks did his ACL on his jumping leg. Bevo was a huge fan. Once his knee went he lost all confidence and he couldn't jump over a jam tin. Number one weapon, gone. He was a great grab as well. With his leap gone, he couldn't catch a cold. Such a shame. JB described him as being Spider Everitt like. Unfortunately he turned out to be more like Daddy Long Legs Everitt, than dangerous Spida!

Same hubris around his non selection as well...

It's somewhat of a disturbing thought but I really think the group of draft watching fans on this board would have done a better job of picking players over the last 10 years. Maybe all of the extra research and personal analysis done by the recruiters distracts them from what we see from the outer - and that's just how well the kids play football. I think we've avoided picking players with certain personality traits but the reality is that a 17 year old males who are really good at footy are generally hot headed, egotistical w***ers who will take a few years to mature. Seems like we favour the humble, quiet types who don't have the hint of arrogance necessary to really believe in themselves. Gresh and Battle the recent exceptions.

There is a certain degree of paralysis through analysis, msg. A fair bit of groupthink goes on in the recruiting game, with the better recruiters picking against the conventional wisdom. Once you get out of the first round it is a bit of a turkey shoot, where you really earn your money. The hype around certain players ensures they will get picked early for FOMO. The ability of clubs like the swines, cats and Crows to keep picking up good players with later picks, shows they are not afraid to take certain risks.

I'm always surprised by how little research and effort is put into less tested markets amongst state and suburban leagues. Time has shown there are plenty of gems there waiting to be discovered. Tim Kelly anyone? The fact is, if someone can't kick, catch and get to where the ball is, it doesn't matter what times he runs, how high he can jump, how big his handspans is, or if he has the personality traits of Ghandi.

I put this to JP when the Jack Darling rumours about his behaviour were around. I did ask, "What if a Wayne Carey, or a plugger tested like a psychopathic axe murderer (probably would've) ?" I'd take him and just keep sharp edged tools away from them, I said. In fairness to JP, RL wanted elite, outside runners(nothing's changed, has it?), rather than another tall forward.

The thing was, Jack was a great runner, martial artist and athletic as they come. Cripper was a type one diabetic as well, although not as affected as Paddy. History indicated it might not be the problem it's turned into with Paddy. The reality is we didn't do enough homework on Paddy, got caught in the hype and made a poor choice. He had nothing to suggest he was a number one pick. He was barely worthy of a first rounder, but the "experts" started an avalanche of love for him. I didn't see what the fuss was about and nor did plenty of others. The emperor had no clothes and we fell for it. Watch his YouTube under 18 highlights and you'll see what I mean. Swings and roundabouts.

Cyril's testing results weren't great either, but watching him at a schoolboy's match for five minutes told you all you needed to know. Still, plenty passed on him, as they did on Cripps, Fyfe, Sloane, Steven et al. If we could crack the code, we'd be rich, I tells 'ya!

8.00 Monday morning - I'm surprised there's been nothing from Moorabbin by now.

They seriously do need some help in the promotion side.

How about some fake news from Richo - a little Teaza on Freeza.

"Oh yeah - look its a little early in the week but jeez he played well on the weekend - what a great story if he does get selected. We'll need to see how he pulls up after training today, I'll give you an update tomorrow morning. Oh look here's his Mum perhaps you'd like to talk to her about how he feeling ATM"

The last sentence on that audio probably sums up this year "there's been some strange selections at StKilda
Certainly have given me plenty of WTF moments

I reckon Goddard has to be played too. He has been doing everything he can to get a game and is possibly not going o be reconstructed. Surely he gets a go in place of Gilbert or Brown even.
