Hmm another hiccup. As they said it was expected. Probably better it's tightness after training yesterday than ripping during the game today. Think 2016 is officially no-AFL games now and solely focus on 2017. We've got 3 years to work it out.
Afl? 2016 will be a no VFL zone.

Shit trade.

Yep terrible luck for the kid and club...

Wish we could fast forward 10 years and see that Freeman has played 200 games and had an outsanding career with our club?

I just hope the club and medicos havent out smarted themselves thinking they had poached a top 10 player from Collingwood, when in fact all they acheived was paying a broken down kid big money for 3 years for zero games. Plus giving up an early Round 2 pick this year in a very even draft. You cant tell me after this latest break down that they are not starting to question whether they dont really have a 'magical wand' and better medical resources than Collingwood - because I am.
I'll be honest I was optimistic even after the first 2 set backs but gee I'm starting to wonder if he will come good at all. The concern for me is all these tightness issues happen at training under bearly any stress or load. How's his hammy going to hold up under AFL intensity come match day? I havnt stuck him yet but gee the fork is in sight.

That's pathetic.

It's been just over six months. Do you pot draftees after half a season?

He's 21 this week; he's still a kid. There is plenty of time, and NOTHING IS CONFIRMED YET!!

So this is beyond an "awareness". Must be worrying. Just remember if we feel bad, it's much worse for Freeman. This is his career on the line. And as far as the cost to the club, I guess the headline rate for his salary includes match day payments, so it may not be as costly as we think.

Pretty frustrating. I wonder why his hamstrings give him so much trouble? Are they just 'formed' incorrectly? So genetics? Did Collingwood ruin them?

Poor guy can't strong together two matches in five weeks, let alone 22 in a season. Hope he bounces back. It'll be some task now though. Not only does he actually have to get the hammies right, he then needs to find confidence in them, then find some form in the VFL and then play AFL. Lots of ifs.

Anyway, best of luck Nathan but surely we cross O'Meara off now?

Feel for the kid but for people to be calling it a shit trade are a bit premature.

Ultra conservative. Every time he has tightness he tells them which is good. The medicos make the call and the scan would be all part of it.

Lets cool our jets before becoming hysterical

Exactly. There's no point jumping to conclusions. He would be telling the club about every time he feels his hamstrings. It might be serious it might be nothing let's see how not only this goes but how the season goes. We've got years still to get him right and I trust our medical staff.

If we paid a third I think we would all be a bit more patient, but it seems like we paid overs for a bloke who hadn't been able to get on the park and had very publicly decided to walk away from his club.

But what did you expect?

Club has been upfront about Freeman, first when he was drafted rhey said 2016 was going to be ultra conservative.

Richo came out and said forget AFL this year.

He has had three setbacks. One a tiny tear, the second no tear and we don't know what this one is.
Would you rather he not tells the club and goes out today and tears the hammy?

As for money, what the hell does that matter. Its a risk but it is worth taking.

Anyway we saved $500k on Carlisle so cool your jets and stay patient.

I'm not concerned about the money, I was more concerned about the draft pick price.

If you have a top 10 pick who hasn't gotten on the ground in his first two seasons, a pick in the mid 20's isn't too bad value. Take into account the fact that his injuries could be extremely long term and he had a public falling out, the frustration comes from the fact we seemed to be beaten at the trade table.

If his body comes good and he lives up to his potential then the trade will obviously be justified, it feels like we tried to take a money ball perspective, but overlooked the fact that the pick would probably have given us better chances of having a premiership quality player.

Let's be honest here, it's not just 'Freeman's only been here for 6 months' anymore. He pinged the hamstring tendon in the NAB Cup 2014 so he's been consistently injured for 2.5 years.

I'm not passing judgement on the trade or our medical team, I'm just making a comment to air my own frustration. No one would be more frustrated than the boy himself so I feel for him. Hope he comes good & has a great career, but that seems to fall just that little bit further away with each setback

He's only been with US for 6 months, so it's perfectly apt.

Bear in mind the whole rationale of the trade was we needed speed and thought we could correct the issues. That doesn't happen overnight.

You sound like you are making rhings up to suit your argument.
Public falling out? Where do you get that from? Freeman has never said a thing about Collingwood. Every trade is public BTW.

As for the dp. How many games has the second round dp from this coming November played for the Saints?

Until he is not playing next year nothing can be deemed a success or failure.
And the moneyball reference makes no sense at all.

Poor kid.

Odds are against him and hope we can get him right, we have plenty of time to keep working at it, I was happy as it was to not see him play AFL this season.

Keep slowly building and get a few games under his belt in VFL2s or VFL late season and hopefully he can participate completely in the off/pre season with the rest of the boys as a fit player.

This is definitely not a time to be impatient, they're doing everything they can. You win some you lose some- he was worth a punt. Good luck to him, hopefully he makes it.

Understand that Barrels and at this moment I think/hope it was worth the risk to get him over to the Saints, but also understand why some supporters are frustrated at the minute, our medicos have been able to achieve no more then what the Filths medicos have at this stage. he has had 3 set backs in 6 - 9 months and with every set back it will make it just that little bit harder for the kid

I understand that but he's been rehab-ing the same injury for 2.5yrs regardless of who's list he was on. The way some people have posted on this thread make out like Collingwood deliberately injured him & sabotaged his career. I'm pretty certain the Pies would love him to be running up & down the wings for them just as much as we want him to do so for us

3 setbacks in 6 months. Has played 5 quarters in the reserves reserves after managing 3 VFL games in 2 years. A pick in the 20s. Right now, it's a shit trade.
Hope he comes good but it's extremely unlikely.

The most frustrating part is he's not even close to playing a game, even at VFL level.
He plays 3 quarters then gets rested for a few weeks then has another setback from training.

You don't remember Buckley's comments before the trade going through? something along the lines of Freeman's problems not being Collingwood and suggesting that they will follow him. The stories coming out about Freeman being unhappy with Collingwood's management. It was obviously an untenable situation, he was leaving Collingwood one way or another.

As for the draft pick, the obvious answer to your insultingly facetious hypothetical is zero. If we had a crystal ball and knew who we were going to pick I could ask you how many games that players has played at any level this year, the answer is probably more than 1. At this stage we are dealing with a player who has not been able to get onto the park in any meaningful way for his first three seasons. The chances of a top 10 pick becoming a premiership quality player is no given, but I would agree that it is more likely than a pick in the mid 20's. The chances of a top 10 pick who hasn't put together a solid month of football since being drafted is probably significantly less likely than a second round pick.

As for the moneyball reference, it would seem to me that the club thought they had found some damaged goods, that if they were able to fix, would see them get a quality player for a far cheaper price than it would usually cost. I have no issues with taking a risk, I don't mind holding onto a list spot for a player of Freeman's potential... the issue is we paid the seller's price when there were a lot of factors which would usually tip things in the buyers favour.

I love the way we have been building our list, but last season's trade week was the first time in a few years that I thought we under performed at the trade table.
