Listening to lethlean on the podcast on the saints website, the way he talked about the pressure on debutantes showed that if freemans selected it'll be like any other selection. It'll come out with the other team changes without making a huge fuss.

I think they're trying to relieve some pressure from the kid and that's why haven't made a big media storm about it. It'll happen tonight and tomorrow but give the kid some of week without being the focus. FWIW I think he'll be selected.

His non selection will be worse this week considering Sydney, whose season hangs by a thread, have taken a risk and selected a guy who hasnt played since 2012, and Adelaide, who can still make finals if they win this week, take a risk selecting a guy coming back from an ACL.

But us, who have been out of finals calculations since rd2, keep making boring, safe selections and cant take a risk on a guy who keeps racking it up in the VFL each week and has definitely earned his chance to play AFL.

It would be absolutely bizarre not to select him, and IMO, could only mean that they have decided he will not be on the list next year. Surely this is the week to play him!

Agree. Imagine if they named him early then he got injured at training today. If he gets through training surely he plays

well that’s strange because debutants are always singled out with videos and announced before the full teams are out.

There isn't a precedent for debuting after 5 seasons though he could very much be an exception.

Don't get me wrong I'd love to see media stuff about him. I'm just trying to justify him playing but not hearing anything yet.

I find it hard to believe that the club would let him talk on channel 9 news if they weren't going to select him.
I guess we'll know soon enough. Holding thumbs for him and Hugh, who have both had miserable luck with injuries.

president & lethlean: "we want to use the opportunity a poor season presents us with. the opportunity to look at things we wouldn't otherwise get the opportunity to look at, like playing younger untried players"

so like all the spin and talk coming out of the club over the last 5 years that statement will be very interesting to look back at the end of the year. if blokes like armo, gilbert, weller etc. are getting blocks of games over say seeing what freeman can do.

I reckon that’s the most exceptionally annoying thing this season (apart from Newnes being selected week in week out).

Since Richo has started (and even in the Lyon days) selection has nothing to do with VFL form. Seriously zip. If Freeman has done nothing else, he has highlighted the massive disconnect between our VFL and AFL teams.

Seen a fair bit of VFL (perks of living around the corner). If VFL form was being rewarded then Hickey, Rice, Lonie and White would have played a lot more games. Austin would have played earlier too.

And BTW for all the Gilbo bashers, he provides really really excellent leadership and presence at VFL (something blokes like Armo, Savage and Longer don't necessarily do). Would keep him just for that if he was willing to!

On the flip side: McKenzie, Phillips, Battle and Long would have played much less (apart from a couple of decent Phillips games earlier this year they hardly get a kick at VFL level). Wright and Joyce wouldn't have played at all (barely VFL standard).

If you were selecting on form right now, Freeman and Goddard would both be playing. But we don't select on VFL form!!

Oh and I get smashed every time for saying this but our depth / development sucks. The non aligned teams we beat (because they are barely VFL standard).

But in the last 33 weeks of VFL footy (since April last year) we have won 3 games against AFL aligned sides. Just 3 (Cats by 2 points, Dogs 12 points and Cats by 27 points)! We haven't even beaten Carlton for two years and they really suck.

And its not necessarily the Sandy boys fault as everyone likes to assume. I stopped writing VFL reports because people didn't want to hear this. But I think at last the supporter base is actually starting to realise that what is going on with our development is absolutely stuffed!
Great post.

The dysfunctional alignment with Sandy has been one of the least spoken about issues regarding development.

Stats are misleading. I have seen passage where 3 players handball in circles until they get clear... Clocking up 3 or 4 disposals just there.

Please keep providing the updates for those of us who can't get to the games.

I watched the game from last week closely. Freeman hit target after target and was going short with basically every kick. This was clearly under instruction from above as the whole team looked short first and kicked short. Freeman read the ball off the contest extremely well and was the first link in basically every move forward.

if the big freeze doesn't get selected im calling the club
Really, you should do it.
If everyone did that, word would get to Finnis pretty quickly that a significant number of supporters are pissed at the club.
Given that the supporters are already pissed at the club after a disgraceful season, alarm bells ought to ring loud and clear.
Hopefully he gets picked anyway, but if not someone needs to give Richo and co. a reality check.

I thought I'd do the same thing but thought I'd end up just making some poor receptionist's day miserable.

All the social media comments haven't made a difference yet so perhaps a barrage of calls actually would achieve something.

He's not a normal defender though. People don't get how footy has changed. He's there to run the ball out and move the ball forward. He is the opposite to a defensive forward, he is literally an offensive defender. Same as people used to criticise Joey playing that role. He's meant to spread off the back of any play and be the dish off to guy.

Geary is a small defender who plays tight, as is Rice, White etc. Brown is a one on one defender, Carlisle is not. That's just not the modern game and not a measure.

If Freeman is playing outside mid, tackles aren't as important because again you are there to spread into space and be the dish off option not sit on a player. Inside mids can e measured on tackles because if you aren't winning the ball yourself, you should be making life hard for a player who did win it.
The thing is in 4 quarters of football I still think you would be able to lay a couple tackles - even Laird and Jason Johannisen average a couple a game.
