we took the punt, saw what he could do, you then re-evaluate and decide if he deserves another contract after that

what we did prior has little bearing on what we do now

I just dont see where he fits in our plans , Hunter , Coff and Ed are ahead of him IMO and then there is Paton plus this years first pick and maybe someone like hannas , at best he is only going to be depth once again IMO

Agree on the kids , Freezer has Armitage, Dunstan or Newnes covered IMO.

Congratulations - caused a lot of hysteria there mate.

Nowhere did it state anything about us not taking him on next year.

All it said was that he is unlikely to play this week and he is out of contract.

In his interview Richardson stated that there wouldn't be much change to the midfield and that Freeman was unlucky to miss - it was simply because Hawthorn were a bigger side.

Way to blow things out of proportion!

Surely there is no way we don't offer him a new contract. Who's spot is he taking? We put 3 ******* years and $1m into this kid. He plays two games and shows signs and then just like that, back out of the team never to be seen again? I will lose the plot if we don't give him at least another year.

This club is ******
Couldn't agree more,
Most likely give Gilbert & Weller another year and flick Freeman , its a joke of a club

We are dead set bozos if we put 3 years of recovery, salary and a second round pick into this guy, only to de-list him just as he gets it together to play senior footy.

We have about 10-15 guys on the list who look pretty unlikely to make it, plenty of room for Freeman for another year at least.

Sign him up, it's a low risk no brainer surely?

As meat loaf tried to sing: you took the words right out of my mouth

Players i would trade / delist before i would even consider freezer:

Longer
Gilbert
Stevens
Armo
Wright
Minch
Weller

There's plenty of scope to move players and keep freezer on even a 1 year base salary contract. If we dump him i will seriously spew up!

It looks exactly like what you would expect though. I thought at the time it was a poor trade and if he is delisted along with Hugh, it really shows what an incompetent football department we have. As maligned as Stanley is, if Goddard goes that's a wasted trade. We were linked to Neal-Bullen and didn't pick him up with either of those picks.

Freeman is a bit similar to Steele. Both were initially first round picks which we were able to trade for using future second round picks.

Steele wasn't getting game time and Freeman had injury issues. Both had substantial upside but Freeman in particular had a lot of risk in terms of getting his body right.

Steele has clearly worked out and has been one of our best players this year. Freeman has finally got his body right but probably missed some of his development years and looks to have lost a bit of his pace.

Personally, i thought it was a good gamble at the time as Freeman did seem to have a high upside. The reality is that the draft is also a gamble. The future second that we used turned into Willem Drew who hasn't played a game also due to injury. It happens.

I hope we keep Goddard around. I think he has shown that he can replace what Brown does but also has substantially better footskills so can be used in a more attacking way. I guess we will see. He, like Freeman, has lost a bit of pace but hopefully after a full year he will be able to do another pre-season and come back a step quicker.

I agree though, at this stage you would probably prefer to have Stanley, as frustrating as he is.

What do we know now after two games?

You never know what we would have taken with that pick and using other clubs as a guide is pretty inaccurate. Willem Drew is pretty highly rated at Port anyway though, bit injury prone ironically.

Steele has worked out for us for sure, he was a good get. Still doesn't let them of the hook for the high risk one though. Freeman had hardly been able to play at any level and we still paid a second rounder for him. Trading out of the first couple of rounds should be really only used to secure players with very high potential and lower risk.

We are likely to have to trade good players to have to get back into this draft or use the future picks again to get back int it. It will mean we have to over pay or undersell. Either way we need to be more responsible and get hold of a top line recruiter.

Has played 1 game this year, looks likely to be dropped with Carlisle coming back in and hasn’t been offered a contract yet.
Fair enough. I would have thought there would be ten ahead of him to be delisted. Would be a strange move doing it with Brown almost down and Austin yet to prove a lot.

I don't think Lonie has signed anything yet either but I'd also be surprised if he is gone.

To be fair I think Austin has proved a lot, just not at fullback. I have a feeling our best pair might be Jake at fullback with Austin at chb

Think it’s talking about Freeman and his huge total of TWO games ;)

Who are the 10?
Longer
Wright
Minch
Gilbert
Freeman
Stevens (retired)
All look likely to go.
Difference between Lonie and Goddard is that Lonie has played 10 games this year and has played very well the last month. If Goddard is dropped that would be 1 game for the year including having Joyce playing ahead him. I’m not advocating delisting him, if you’ve seen previous posts of mine you would see I’m 100% against it. I’ve been pretty annoyed despite the job Brown does, that he keeps playing ahead of Hugh, in such a shit season it does nothing for our future. And Austin is a different player but regardless it’s been shown a few times this year that he was preferred too Hugh as well.
