I'm not getting the hate that seems to be coming for this kid. I've watched this age group since under 15's and freeman has always been the standout midfielder for Victoria. He missed under 16's and 17 champs due to family so that probably hasn't helped his publicity but he is the most influential midfielder there was this year, regularly kicks 4+ goals so can't see where that has come from. His kicking isn't poor, recruiters just think it could become vulnerable at AFL level, I disagree as I can see bucks really getting into him about it.
Most people I have talked to had him ranked behind only Martin on who could make the most impact at afl level. And in terms of people saying they'd preferred Lennon, no, just no, he will find it hard to fit into a position, has played as a tall forward all juniors but stopped growing so will have to adjust his game style alot to suit the AFL.
I can quite comfortably say that I have complete confidence in him making a very reliable mid over the years, and with his confidence he wouldn't let ya tell him otherwise anyway.

Thanks for the input. All good to hear. I like his kicking style, it's neat and uncomplicated and from the clips I've seen he doesn't have trouble finding a target. It seems to be more his ability in congestion and showing more composure. He is no doubt an exciting prospect in many ways.

An informed opinion.. that has no place in here! ;)

Interesting that there's some comments around about his "in your face" attitude, more so from a purely confident in his own ability point of view than anything, but that's why he dropped down the order a bit also.

The more I watch of him the more I like, he's exactly what we need and along with Broomhead and Kennedy will provide us real pace in our midfield for years to come.

He compared himself to Luke Schuey, I think that's probably the most accurate AFL comparison there is for Freeman.

Be like Ballaytine and get under players skin which what a Team Needs

I'd have no problem at all having a player who liked to niggle the opposition. No point cracking out the fairy bread and creaming soda... I want clubs to hate playing us.

When I did a list in my head of the guys I was hoping would be around at pick 10, Freeman was probably my last choice....but that said all the other guys went picks 1-9 anyway so in the end he was a best available selection.

I put him ahead of Lennon and the others because he has some serious weapons that not many have in this draft. Although I don't rate testing that highly, Lennon's was just too poor to put him in top 10 calculations.

The only guy I would've put ahead of Freeman was Sheed. However, I think we had an unspoken agreement with West Coast to let him through.

I'm happy enough with that because we have done 2 magnificent trades with West Coast over the last 2 years. One trade has landed us Grundy and the other has landed us Scharenberg.

As we've seen from Sydney, forging strong trading alliances is very smart.

I also like the scharenberg + freeman combination. One provides versatility and the other provides real weapons.
I think Dom Sheed will end up being one of the best mids in the comp, Judd Buckley like. Do you think the unspoken agreement deserves to be broken in a dog eat dog world?

I must admit of the remaining options at 10 I liked Lennon more than Freeman but put my faith in Hine & co knowing best.

Not sure if this comparison has already been made but the first player I thought of after watching his highlights was that we just picked Nathan Foley. Compact, solidly built and can burst out if a pack with the ball tucked under his arm. Anyone else see this likeness?

He also provides some much needed leg speed in the guts to compliment our current set up. Welcome to the Pies Nathan.

Hmm, let's see. Bursts out of packs with ferocious speed, averages 10 contested possessions a game, built low and wide with an explosive change of direction, and has a mongrel kick. Yep, welcome to the club Swanny Jnr. :thumbsu:

Barham was never quick he was a middle of the road plodder and a horrofic turnover merchant
My world started shuddering then. I thought you were calling Racehorse Ricky Barham slow! Never!

The talk at my work today between Blues and Bomber supporters was priceless..
Did you see the players Collingwood drafted!!!Bloody hell, how did they get all those guys???..It's not fair.. They even got a likely freak at pick 77..

Bombers fans complaining about fairness?

In fairness, Jaxson Barham was quick too - He couldn't hit the side of a barn with a drop punt, but he was pretty quick.

It's just an all-round bad call.

Not sure why we picked a guy with terrible kicking efficiency.

WEAKNESSES
He can lack a tiny bit of composure sometimes with his kicking, mostly because he is running so quickly. His kicking efficiency for the Dragons was 60.2 per cent, with most of the other top midfielders a touch higher. He still is a little inconsistent, and his good games for the Dragons were often followed with quieter ones, but that gap is closing.

Well noted. AFL will put him under more pressure, which will really test him. We have plenty young players that can run but their kicking is not always up to scratch.

So Nathan Freemans dad was a school boy 100m hurdle champ. So our new Speedy Gonzales or we can call him Dash from the incredibles, just need to photo shop this cartoon picture and put naths head on him? or watch the vid.

That quote actually refers to the gap between Scharenberg and Aish, not Scharenberg and Freeman.

If you read the whole thing it's pretty obvious: "(It was) pretty well-documented that Matt Scharenberg or James Aish were going to be there and there was really a feather between both of those players and we went for the taller utility type that can fill a need right away"

Poor reporting by the Collingwood website to take our own recruiter's words out of context.

Cheers, I read and saw the same.

Pre-draft I would have gone Cripps or Acres at 10, but that is without the benefit of knowing how highly we rated Langdon. If the club internally had him at 17 Freeman was by far the best option on the board at 10 for us.

I'm not as put off by his kicking as others. I for one have no problems with a guy that can sometimes turn it over because he takes the game on. Heath Shaw at his best was a great example of that. I never classed him as that highly skilled by foot because he was always prone to have one or two OOF's or direct turnovers a match when under pressure exiting the back half. I could live with it though because he was making the play which Freeman will do as well.

One thing I would love to get my hands on is Freeman's kicking efficiency when not under pressure. I saw a stat recently where Fyfe runs at low 60's when not under pressure and I dare say that Freeman will be an above average kick in that regard from what I've seen of him.

One final thing with Freeman that I love and that will really work for him at the next level is his desire to be in constant motion. Once disposing of the ball he keeps running to the next contest (which a lot of kids at U18 level don't) and if he takes a mark or gets a free kick he plays on immediately which is going to be a great ingredient to add to our best 22 going forward with that ability to gain meters so underrated in today's game.

We just need him to put it all together on a consistent basis and he'll be a star.
