Going into the draft, I would've said that our number-one requirement was to get players who kick the ball well. Not clear that Freeman fits that brief. But in the post-draft glow, when a footy hasn't yet been kicked in anger, I'd prefer to focus on what he can do. He has pretty rare pace and the confidence to blast away from congestion with the ball in hand. And with no Wellers, no Daisy, and Swan now a veteran that was something we needed to add to our midfield mix.

Did his dad also play for the saints in the late 80's.

The more I think about it the more I realise that with Shaw, Thomas, Wellingham and Johnson going and Swan getting older we really have a glaring need for a line breaker. I guess from that point of view Freeman was an obvious choice. We also need more outside skill and precision so you would have loved Aish if he was available but it wasn't to be. Quietly excited about Freeman's potential though.

Daisy an dwellers may have been quick, but they weren't the best kicks either

Very True. Daisy could be hot and old with his Kicks. Weller was a Good Kick but as you say not the best either.

Just have to make sure he does not turn the ball over much because of it

Am I the only one reminded a bit of Swan? Zip combined with endurance, cheeky grin, solid build...

Rumors have it we have committed to taking this player in the Preseason draft to assist in that department!

Has nothing to do with his football ability, but he seems a well-spoken kid and he looked absolutely rapt to be coming to the club. Do the kids expected to go high get some sort of media training for the occasion? Would have been like a bunny in the headlights at that age, personally, but the draftees I've seen all handled the interviews well.

Haven't seen much footage of him kicking and opinions differ between him needing general technique work and the technique being OK and just needing to be a bit better composure / decision-making wise. Really happy - Freeman and Adams should add grunt :thumbsu:

The kids who are a chance of getting picked up have a player manager, at least an agreement to work with a particular manager in the event they are drafted. That person would provide media training for sure, and would probably have a fair idea if they were going to be top-10 or so for a bit of extra training.

Seemed to get along with Bucks very well in the Video.

Sounds to have good Charisma;)

Just on that, how good does Boyd present on camera? Not only has he got all the perfect attributes but he actually sounds poised, balanced, intelligent, everything you could possibly want in a recruit. Hard not to like him.

Looks like he just ate Travis Cloke!

Too Much Stew

The quote below was attached with the picture by an irate Hawk fan around the time Dew was drafted.:p

They've had a brain seizure. What the f#ck. They must've been more pissed than a plane load of cricketers going to England.

Bloody hell. Stuart Dew. 125 kilograms. ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE. He should've been picked for the Biggest Loser, not the Hawthorn Footy club.

I knew they'd never hold the line. He's 28 years old. 28 and morbidly obese. What happened to the youth policy. Sure he can kick, but it'll take him a year to tie his bootlaces.

He's definitely a franchise player, in both senses of the word.

He isn't a poor kick this is getting a bit ridiculous. He just isnt an elite kick middle ground people middle ground.

From what I've seen I'm inclined to agree. He appears to lack vision, however, because he's not scanning the field properly while running like a bat out of hell. Sometimes when you run that fast, you simply approach your opponents faster. A couple of those up-and-under kicks looked like they happened because he looked up and had a defender standing right in front of him.

Yep, it's coachable, may take two years. Mooney however is different who does the same thing.
That natural feel for the game is lacking. Gee I hope we can get him right.
