I am not happy seeing Freeman leave, because Hine rarely fails with top 10 picks and I would have loved to see what he could do for us long term.

As ordinary as this news is, we just need to try and get the best deal we can.

Oh he's holding off cause we've asked him too due to the minor shit storm Treloar's announcement created.

Freeman was adamant Aish is Pies bound and sighted this as one of the reasons why he could be leaving.

I find that being the case from freeman that it is very Contradictory because if he is asking for the reported $300K. then you would want to be a best 22 player James Aish or not.

Genuine question: with the academy thing does it make a difference to GWS whether it is pick 5 or 7?

Pick 5 = 1878 pts Pick 7 = 1644 pts. Difference = 234 pts or about pick 53 (233 pts). Depends how many points GWS want but nothing a late pick swap couldn't achieve.

I understand what you mean, and almost agree but they aren't facts.

The figures are all speculation and we don't know what Scharenberg signed for nor do we know what Freeman was offered. I suspect Freeman leaving has more to do with his mismanagement of injury or competition for spots rather than the amount we offered.

Can't argue with your last sentence either, in fact Freeman himself stated the competition for spots as the primary reason for possible departure.
But the prevailing opinion on here is he's a money hungry little shit campaigner.....

Interesting timing of this announcement. We recruited him at the time on the basis of Dangerfield like qualities when it came to burst speed clearance qualities.

Dangerfield will announce his intentions this afternoon. Trade radio went with him requesting a FA move back to Victoria. Will more than likely be the Cats but stranger things have happened. Lol.

and we have the $600K proposed for Kruser + $300K for freeman would be about the 1million mark for danger. I like your thinking

Well we don't have anything else to go on by as for some reason the Club didn't announce the monetary worth of Scharenberg's contract.

And in any case people are rubbishing Freeman based on none other than the media reports....

I very much doubt that players discuss money between each other also.
But to come to your second point and knowing that you are acquainted with Freeman, I think most supporters are just disappointed that after two years where the club has patiently waited for him to recover over injuries, has not considered him repaying the faith.

Personally, I have no strong opinion as he has not played any game at AFL level, I have no idea whether he will be a loss. However, if it is true that he is leaving because of lack opportunities due to Aish or Trelaor coming to Collingwood, don't think I would want a player that doesn't have that competitive beast in him to let his performance demand a place in our top 22.

Looking at it from Freeman's perspective and I can see why he's decided to move. If his hamstrings don't come good at least he goes out with a higher $ contract behind him, which would go a long way to setting him up. If his hamstrings come good he's got less competition for a spot and an easier shot at an AFL career.

Looking at it from the 'pies perspective, we simply must have thought the extra $ wasn't worth paying, whether that be a risk he doesn't come good, overall salary cap position or setting a precedent to other recruits that loyalty is important and we won't be held over a barrel.

From the Saints perspective you have to pay overs to poach young talent and with less youngsters coming through especially with pace it was worth the risk.


In terms of trade pick 5 is overs, but I sense we'll play hard ball. I'd start at Billings for Freeman + something extra or simply St Kilda's first pick next year which is likely to be higher than 5.

I, along with most was quite pleased with the positioning of the club to land two first round picks in 2013. It looked like a sure fire winner.
Alas injury and now capricious and avarice flaws embedded in untried recruits have soured those masterful plans. Those and the bloody Western Bulldogs who snaffled our preferred choice in Bontempelli. If Freeman goes he goes, he's clearly not one of us and in the end we can't have everyone.

I've never met Dave but I'm sure he'd say you can't get to 63,874 posts without a 50th post, only it would have taken Dave an hour not 6 months. All clubs would have treated Freeman the same (maybe not Essendon) so I don't think he owes us. If we get at least a second rounder from St. Kilda and it helps with other trades I'm happy with him leaving and all the best to Nathan.

Good luck to the kid. Unfortunate reality is playing time equates to bigger contracts and in a short term employment life that AFL is players don't have time to wait for that opportunity.
