Nathan Fyfe broken leg

Hodge hit his head and had the wobbles. Came back on 5 minutes later, but that's different right?

Interesting had that discussion on the night.... I definitely wanted him out there. But I said to my mate.... If it was someone like Jimmy Bartel (concussion history)... No way would you send him out there.

Fyfe's stress fractures were the equivalent of Jimmy's concussion.

Trent Croad went into the 08 GF with stress fractures. Broke his foot in the game. Never played again.

So yeah. It's different.

My take (educated guess really)

His form went south after round 15 or so.
He was goimg for scans just about every week

This has been known to Fremantle for weeks.
Their choices
1 Complete rest (probably not available for finals)
2 Immediate surgery (definitely not available for finals)
3 Rest as much as possible and accept that post-season surgery is virtually certain

What would you do with your best player

Option 1 - complete rest.

He is arguably a generational player. Don't put his career on the line for 1 season.

he has carried this for weeks, refer to western derby round 20

he has had a few weeks off leading into the game

he takes 2 marks on the 50 arc and fit he would usually go back make the distance easily, instead he short passes both to matt deboer 40 out... that is far lower %age play. since that game he also avoided kicking long.

Not trying to say Fyfe isn't tough, just for those who think he's either:
- pulled off a minor miracle
- Freo's staff are negligent

I know that both Daniel Cross and Jack Viney kept playing on fractured fibulas during games over the last two years. Although they didn't have stress fractures leading up to that and they both did them late in the game and not early in the first quarter.

I think Pendles did it a few years back and there surely are others who have played out the game before the diagnosis is confirmed. Once it's broken it's unlikely to get any worse. If they can bear the pain they can keep playing.

haven't erally been following Fyfe's injury woes in latter part of the season but surely the stress fracture didn't first present itself on fri night? When i first fractured my fibula I could not put any weight on in at all, it was only after a bit of rest that I was able to use it somewhat (tho the pain returned quickly to which the docs advised me to stay off the leg until there was actual mri proof that it healed)
Pretty shifty call to let him keep playing with that fracture (despite being Freo's best), stressies can turn chronic if not allowed to heal. Wonder he woulda dealt with the granny lol, a certain simpsons clip comes to mind :D

Just to clarify for all the armchair medico's out there, a fractured fibula, though serious, is far less significant than a fracture of the tibia. The fibula, though playing a role in supporting the ankle joint, is not the main structural bone of the lower leg (which would be the tibia), and most fibula fractures result in pain, but not a whole lot in the way of structural problems or other complications, unless they involve the ankle joint. People have been known to still be able to walk fine with a fibula fracture, and athletes have been known to continue competing in the immediate time-period. A lot also depends on the location and type of fracture and if there were any other complications. Unless you were a doc in the rooms at the time, or have seen the x-rays or examined his leg, you can't really be in the right place to comment on it.
(Anyway, thats my take on it - im sure some Orthopods or Physios would give a much better description)

A fit Fyfe was the difference between winning a flag and not - he is that good. Freo were flying early in the year on the back of Fyfe, he is an amazing talent just like Ablett.
As long as Fyfe is playing extremely good football Freo will be top 4 fighting for a flag each year.
Take out Fyfe and freo struggle.

Shouldn't have played, and shouldn't have been left on with such a pronounced limp.

Questions need to be asked.

Pretty weak to make such a black-and-white stance if you didn't have all the info needed to make that decision.
What about all the times Goodesy played when he was underdone or injured? Pretty sure he's done that in finals as well... its part of sport, and you make cost-benefit decisions all the time... leave up to the people actually payed to make those decisions rather being a bullshit armchair medico.

You can say that for knee injuries as well. The OX is a prime example

Whitecross from Hawthorn is another example but he's had 2 knee reconstructions.

One wonders if Gaz jr will return the same player or not, but then when he comes back in full force next year and doesn't impact in the saem way people will just say it's old age more than the long term injury

Why wasn't Fyfe managed better given Freo spent the majority of the year well clear on top of the ladder? I mean after the well publicized cork he received from Mitchell, Freo played him next week straight away, against Carlton at home! Seriously was that necessary?

That's just the way of Ross 'the boss' Lyon :drunk:

Bloody oath - although not sure I can say much with what happened with Croad in 2008.

Think he's probably ok with his medal

Yeah, that came to mind. Also Campbell Brown, from memory he played that whole finals series with a broken foot. I think in this case because it is Ross, people are more cynical than they might be with a coach more known for his warmness and caring attitude.

Regardless of whether a risk was taken that should not have been, and I don't think we know enough to judge, it was a pretty amazing effort. He was immense in the second quarter, I thought. Clearly not right but still gave everything probably having a fair idea that he'd be long odds to play the following week if they made it. Up until about round 14 he was having one the best seasons I have ever seen, sad that this ongoing injury came along to ruin the back end of it.

Still think he will win the Brownlow tonight, though. It seemed like he was clear BOG week after week for a period.
