A few mates and I where having an argument to who is better now and who will be better in the future. I personally said Fyfe will be better but one(freo supporter) said Fyfe and the other two (Richmond & Geelong Supporters) said Martin. It was agreed that their both guns though.

What your decision bigfooty?

Martin is a powerful footballer in the mould of Voss, Fyfe reminds a lot of James Hird, both out and out guns, if i had a choice to pick one, it would have to be Fyfe, i think he has shown more now and long term i see a touch more upside from him over Martin. Tough call thou.

both awesome potential, but i think fyfe is going to be next to impossible to tag with a few more years of experience under his belt.so i say fyfe.

Questions about Fyfe's disposal are perhaps overstated. Largely it's good bordering on great.
His ball handling is something out of the box.

Martin's a beast, but personally think Fyfe's footy smarts, tank and, in particular, his strength in the air and overhead make him such a tantalizing prospect.

I was actually thinking about this too. I think Fyfe is a more complete footballer, who is very hard to keep out of games particularly given his marking ability and aerobic capacity. Dustin probably is more of an impact player than Fyfe, in a burst he could hurt you with goals and thumping kicks, however he can get tagged out a bit but he'll no doubt get better with that given that this is his second year.

IMO they are definitely both fantastic players and tomorrow's superstars, but for mine they're too different to come up with who's better.

martin is the one. Still have some pretty serious questions on fyfe's disposal. Other than that a great young project and could be an absolute superstar.

Fyfe's disposal by foot across his body on the run to Pavlich at the SCG coupla weeks back looked acceptable.

This is one comparison thread that's worthwhile. Two super youngsters who've had several great moments this season. Fyfe looks better in the air, maybe not as bull-like tough through packs as Martin is.

A concern would be Martin becoming affected by Richmond's culture of defeat, I'd like to see the Tigers change that with Martin (and Cotchin) leading the way.

True, Fyfe is prone to the occasional shank - I suspect it will improve, but he's not a natural long kicking specialist like say Mundy is for us or Murphy for the Dogs can do for example. There's no doubting his in tight and 'medium' range work though - he can see things unfold like some sort of clairvoyant and take advantage of it.

In short, I'd take Fyfe in a close call because he has the potential to be so versatile and thus 'untagable'.

Having said that, if I was looking for a genuine midfielder, I might lean towards Martin because he has that Judd like ability to do that 'bust out of the pack clearance' type thing. Both gems.

Personally I believe it will be Martin. They have both been shut out of games when tagged, which is completely fine considering their only in their second year.

Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not 100% sure but was the derby the first time Fyfe has been tagged ? We didn't play our best tagger on him, not because of the fact he isn't deserving of the number 1 tag but because Scooter simply wouldn't match him in the air. We had Ebert and Waters rotating through, well that's what I saw anyway. Ebert is quite good overhead himself and Waters can obviously spoil. These are the sort of players you will see run with Fyfe IMO. He still played a big part in the fourth quarter fight back but overall didn't have a big impact. The underrated part of his game is the ability to gain the inside ball. One play against Sydney he beat two or three of them, faked a hand pass, waited a bit longer than delivered to a teammate in space. All class and I think everyone loves him. Every club would love him and you will see alot of juniors modeling their game on his in a few years time or even now:thumbsu:

Dustin Martin is unbelievably strong for his age and is all class. The reason he will be elite is because of his goal kicking ability. The kid can kick them from 55 with ease. He is also quite fast and has a field kick on him. He wins the inside ball and fends people off the the don't argue or the 'Dustin Martin fend off' he can only get stronger and faster from here on in. I saw somewhere that apparently Cousins labeled him as the best 18 year old he has ever seen. Not 100% sure on the truth to this though. The only reason I could see him struggle is because he's been with a struggling club since debut. Fyfe however has the opportunity to play with a club starting to find some good form and is in the top 8.

We need to just sit back and watch these two players for the next 12 years. In 30 years we may be talking about them being two of the greatest players ever, it's impossible to predict right one though. David Swallow could be better than the both of them. Heppell could be the best for the next 10 years. Shuey could be the best out of the lot. As could Zac Smith. They all could not reach their full potential and only be in the top 20 for the comp their whole career when it's obvious they have the potential to be greats. Really will enjoy watching all of these players for the next 10-15 years:thumbsu:

Martin for mine. Very tough to call and two different players. But just love watching Dusty play. IMO he will be a better player but that's a guess , how am I to know. None of us do will just have to wait to see how they turn out because none of us could be certain how they will end up.

I can't remember every game, but he has been tagged (no Mundy or Barlow to worry about, Hill playing away from the midfield more, thus he gets attention unless Pav gets the tag). The week before he had KJack (a rated tagger) on him for a bit and then a couple of other players, none were particularly successful - Longmuir said as much in one of the interviews.

You're right though, still young and can be shut out.

And there in lies his value. If he finds himself being tagged out of general midfield play, then he can move to a flank or fwd and become a marking target and unless the opposition react damn quick, he'll kill them in the air. Of course, Martin does some good work sitting in that fwd 50 too. As we're saying, both potential elites.

Good post overall though.

I rate Kieren Jack very highly so if he was getting tagged by him, I sure as hell didn't notice it which is a tremendous sign.

Him and Dusty could end up being reasonably similar players despite very different builds. Both have the ability to kick goals, haven't seen Fyfe yet but if he is played out of the square when freo get Morabito back next season. Watch out. Both can win the hardball. Just Fyfe is better overhead around the field and Dusty is better with the bursts of speed from the pack and inside ball.

not much more to add there lach.my nephew had a training camp with ben allan last week, he said to the youngsters you have to a weapon to make it in the afl.ben mentioned fyfe's weapon is his tank.he has two i reckon, tank & next level overhead marking.

That's just about the rub of it. Further, both seem to have the drive, raw talent and discipline to improve their (all be it small) deficiencies and that's what will really make them potential supper stars. Actually you mentioned Shuey before, he's similar. Or look at what Thomas has done in admittedly an ideal situation at the Pies. You could probably pull out a few more. It's not just what they show, it's their demonstrated ability to keep adding to their game and getting better.

He directly provided two goal assists and kicked the third to get Fremantle within 2 points of West Coast with 8 minutes remaining. Directly responsible for the final three goals of the game. Pretty sure he had an impact.

Fyfe came from the country didn't he ? If so there could be a big reason to his attitude, growing up doing hard work everyday. Quite tough out in the country to so he would have learnt there isn't any excuses. If he didn't than he must just be a massively driven kid who has always had the desire to get the best out of himself and make afl.

Martin's dad seems very straight forward, looks tough as nails and would pull Martin into line if he was getting ahead of himself, he gave him a job when he quit year 9 but he made sure Martin had a legitimate chance of making afl first. Than he got him to work 12 hour days IIRC. I'm 15 and I know of no one who would be willing to do that. Martin also refused that massive contract GWS were throwing at him so it shows he is loyal to his club as is Fyfe which is good signs.

Yep, five minutes from Fyfe brought us back from what looked a likely defeat.

Just has that ability to go to the next level when required.
