Nathan Fyfe vs Dustin Martin

I'd go Martin, midfielders that consistently kick goals are worth their weight in gold

That's where Martin excels for me, when he gets going he can inflict some serious scoreboard pain on the opposition.

Fyfe can do the tough stuff just as well, but the scoreboard pressure Martin can apply puts him in front for me
Which is why I said earlier that Fyfe is probably a slightly better midfielder, but Martin is a much better forward. Elite at both as opposed to elite at one.

Fyfe cracks under pressure too much. Hopefully he will have another GF opportunity to erase the memories of his goal kicking which cost the flag.

Again he was one of the Dockers better players, his goal kicking was poor but was still one of the best on the day.

Can you name some other times he has cracked under pressure?

Unfortunately, he choked in the biggest game. There is no way around it. People for some reason don't like describing it that way, perhaps too emotional?

I really hope he gets another crack to wipe out the memory.

You said he chokes too much and you have one example of a player playing a good game at the age of what 22? Holding him to a pretty high standard. Dusty has had quiet finals as well.

Probably because it didn't happen.

He missed two shots at goal from 50m out in some of the most blustery conditions I've ever watched a game in, but otherwise was excellent.

It was a pretty ordinary game so I understand not many people would have ever watched it again to realise how well he played.

Well, depends what you expect. I expected him to kick those goals. He did too.

This is really a bit of a mystery. Somehow I always think Fyfe would the the most dangerous top mid going forward with his marking. And he started as a forward kicking 8 in TAC club. But somehow has not yet happened. Perhaps later in his career. Can see him spent more time forward later in his career. His gamestyle is pretty physical demanding.

No doubt he will play there and will probably do very well. But other than marking he doesn't have the pace or kick (in comparison to Martin, or a similar player like De Goey) so in that respect he might not be as effective, and he will come up against similar sized backman like Grimes who specialise in nullifying mid sized forwards. Time will tell but right now Freo need him big time on the ball.

In what universe is this a debate?

Have you looked at their finals records?

People using irrelevant stats in nothing games are deluded

Fyfe only has to rid himself of the choker tag, to do so he needs finals. Hope the new bloke can get them there.

Fyfe and choker do not belong in the same sentence. Every player misses goals they shouldn't, big stretch to call him a choker on a one off event. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to redeem himself due to Freo being average of late. It was only a few years ago that everyone was labelling Cotchin as massive finals failure.

I guess that means that a guy like Jack Gunston is clearly better than Martin then?

Definitely a better player than Richo too.

In fact half the league before and since were better than Richo according to this new criteria. All those nothing games he played count for naught.

Stats
Fyfe 174 BL votes in 173 games...
Martin 176 BL votes in 224 games..

Leigh matthews trophy
Fyfe 2 v Martin 1

Fyfes never won a coaches award
Martin has the 1.

Martin a few norm smiths, Gary Ayres etc.

Basically in regular season per game Fyfe is more consistent.
Martin can turn it on every now and then and has more down games.
Finals Martins better, Fyfe hasn't had many opportunities but best case hes even with Martin in that domain.

Only way its really decided is Martin gets more consistent in regular season or Fyfe gets a crack at a few more finals.

For mine its hard to split, would be happy with either.

Bad kicking is bad football. Fyfe failed in the big one, Martin's dominated.
Fyfe was 22... Martin was 26 and had a much better team around him.

Fyfe was good in that GF no matter what anyone says, a few misses does not change the impact he had on that game.
