I would rather Nathan Jones than Brock McLean

You guys should be thankful to have a hard in and under like him

Comrade Dennis, there are many things I cannot explain in the world and one of them is Brock McLean's metamorphosis into Brick McLean.

Think back to the final against the Sainters in 2006. How he wooed us all. Here was a man who was destined to be our captain and lead us on a push for the summit. Such was his importance, when he went down in the very first game of 2007, it essentially derailed the entire season. Vale, Neale Daniher. Welcome to the lower depths.

Last year, in sharp contrast, I had to pinch myself as a reminder that Brock was actually on the paddock. I don't know who is the Doctor Evil in his life but someone has stolen his Mojo permanently or - much to our shame -a few lucky quarters conned us back in 2006. Comrade Dennis: these are the best hypotheses I can offer. I am genuinely mystified by his decline. I am sure there are others who can come up with a better explanation.

While it is good to hear that Nathan Jones had a creditable game against the Crowbots, a metaphor about swallows & summer comes to mind.

Admittedly i only saw the Freo game, in which Jones looked one of our best. Saw this over the weekends paper;

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/a...season-formguide/story-e6frf9ox-1225843295997

"Nathan Jones (Mid)
$397,300
Played all four pre-season matches and averaged 103 points per match - 28 more than his 2009 average. Ball use often questionable, but could be a decent buy."

Not saying that supercoach is the be all and end all, but it gives us an indication he has improved from last year. I thought the critics on here a being a little harsh to describe him as a dud, i am sure he would be the first to admit he could improve his skill execution, but we have a few like that a melbourne.

I believe mainly due to a new game plan, influx of players into the side over the previous 2 years and being non competive over the last 3 years every player who has the ball is more often than not under immense pressure. As we impove so will our skills, once players have a bit more time under less pressure their skills will stand out.

jones even said on afl.com.au that he will have his "standout" year and he will go into the category of the likes of selwood and swan as one of the games best. i think the last time he shaved his hair, he cut the main message relaying vein leading to inept overall judgment. he will proove me wrong though.

He said nothing of the sort.

"I've been real happy with my pre-season form. I played pretty well over the four games, so I'm really looking to establish myself fully as a quality AFL player," he said.

"You look up to the greats that are playing now and that's what I'm aspiring to do.

Those are quotes from Jones, he said he was aiming to establish himself as a quality AFL player not saying he's going into the class of Selwood.

Also never call Dane Swan one of the games best, it's disgusting and massively incorrect.

Agreed. Dane Swan one of the bests?

That's totally inappropriate. It's lewd, vesivius, salacious, outrageous!

Did I tell you to put the balm on? Nobody said to put the balm on!

Jones did work hard on his kicking and it had really improved by the end of next year. He's also thinking more about his disposal and not just dishing it off to the first teammate he sees.

Hahaa love Jackie Chiles!

Not sure if people have read this but interesting that Jones see Scully as having an immediate impact on his performances.

MELBOURNE midfielder Nathan Jones says he will become a better player thanks to the club's acquisition of No.1 NAB AFL Draft pick Tom Scully.

Although Scully has yet to debut - he is almost certain to play his first AFL match against Hawthorn at the MCG this Saturday - Jones said his new Melbourne teammate had already helped him improve.

"He's going to bring the best out of me and bring the best out of other players at the footy club, so I really can't wait to see him in action. Hopefully he gets his chance this week," Jones told afl.com.au.

Let's hope so, I don't beleive Jones has porgressed that much at all since coming to the club. He may be bigger but that's about it!

He is actually playing lighter than when he first came to the club. He wieghed around 87kg and is now at 82 kg to increase his running capactiy. In fact i am pretty sure he lost that 5kg during his second pre season going into the 2007 season.

The clubs progress has dropped significantly since jones came to the club, which hasn't helped him. But his has progressed not as far as some of us here would like, however i expect him to step up this year like moloney and sylvia did last year.

In the last half of last season he started to play some good footy, specifically his disposal was alot better. One of his problems I believe is that over the last 2 or 3 seasons he's had to take on the role of being our no.1 inside midfielder while he was still learning the caper and developing.

I'm expecting improvement from him over the next couple of years when the other guys (Scully, Trengove, Grimes & McKenzie) improve.

Comrade - respectfully - if there was improvement in the latter half of last year, I must have blinked and missed it.

Sunday will be a good test for Jones. No doubt doubts his committment or his Phar-Lap like heart, whatever that really means.

Against a weakened Hawthorn side, let's see if he has got the ability to be more than a B Minus player in the scheme of things.

I think you must have fell into a coma because Jones played some great football in the latter half of last year.

Needs to de less then he will do more.

What does everyone think of his part time move forward?

I think its a good idea to build a second skill into a player, we're short on forwards at the moment and have the opportunity to play McKenzie, Trengove, Scully and Grimes in the centre square. Jones is certainly more able to battle away in our impossible forward line than all of the above (maybe Trengove could go okay). That said I don't think Jones will ever make it as a forward.

At least you can own it. He has had a great year! :)

Was having a bit of friendly banter with a loud Freo supporter in front of my (top tier, olympic stand, at the front, near MCC) about Jones' disposal. Needless to say, I won the argument ;)
