I'm not defending Krakouer's actions but the cabbie said that Krakouer was sitting in the front passenger seat and thumped the inside of the windscreen. I doubt he expected it to actually break.

This may surprise you but I do understand how Uber works.

Maybe Krak called Uber but they wouldn't send a car so he grabbed a taxi instead. The result is no different.
