Too early to tell but he does seem to have that something about him that makes you think he could make it. Good time to be having an impact though, could get there rather quickly which might not actually be a good thing.

The fact that we're talking about a guy who hasn't even completed one FC game yet as a potential Test spinner is quite a good indicator of where our spit stocks are at right now! :o

That said, I like the look of Lyon immensely. Even his bowling in the Big Bash looked like the bowling of a guy who knows how to take wickets in the longest form as well. We'll wait and see, but he looked good for SA today (though the stream isn't great quality), and at 23 is still quite young. Great signs. :)

I thought it the first over I saw him bowl at the WACA in the big bash - great flight and quality turn.

But your sentiment is right - when Dan Cullen was taking wickets - we all thought he would be a good bowler in 3/4 years.

Now we hope the spinners become great tomorrow

Pretty amazing that (from what I understand) his main reason for coming to Adelaide was to work on the ground staff at Adelaide Oval, and within the space of a couple of months, he has people talking about him as a possible Test hopeful. Would be one of the great stories if he did make it that far.

He bowls with good flight and gives it a good rip which is what a spinner needs. His control seemed good in the big bash so lets be patient with him and see how he develops. He looks like he could be worth a shot one day but I hate when we rush spinners in or give them a run after doing nothing.

A few here in Adelaide still don't rate him because he apparantley gets 'tonked' in Grade cricket. But, from what I've seen, he has tremendous potential, I think he'll make it.

What are his figures like for grade cricket this year??? An off spinner that flights the ball like he does is bound to get hit for a few occasionally.

I'd like to let him play a full season of first class cricket before we even start talking about it.

Ideally yes but with our spin stocks as is if he is good enough we just need to back him and give him a good run instead of dropping him after 2 Tests

14 wickets @ 24, Strike rate 38. He gets 'tonked' apparently, though I must be missing something. 1/53 off 6 in one of the games, perhaps its based just on that match.

Hasnt really had much of a chance to bowl, only after he got a run in the big bash did he get a prolonged spell of bowling (29 overs), his previous 5 matches he only bowled 61 overs.

That's very true. However, some of the selections of spinners of late have been such obvious mistakes that they couldn't afford to play them any longer than they did. Hopefully Lyon will be the spinner we've been searching for.

His figures don't really suggest he gets smashed at all IMO.

Done well so far, shown he has the talent. Will be interesting to see what the side is to travel to Sri Lanka. Surely the selectors couldn't choose anyone other than Beer as first choice spinner, since they have shown their hand - or will the merry go round continue?

I'm not advocating Beer's selection, but surely they'd have to give him more than one match before dropping him?

He was such a left-field choice and they don't give spin bowlers much of a chance. I would hope they'd give him more of a chance, but I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else lining up in the next test series.

If Krejza has a good world cup I reckon it will be him, it also depends on what Punter decides to do .

NO

Cam Boyce is better

took a bag in a shield final and is a big spinner of the ball and is a leggie

Mark Barber is the best spinner in the state, but obviously doesn't fit the SACA mould, ie born in SA.

The best thing about him is that he is scared to flight the ball (hauritz and doherty looking at you). Throw is the fact the he actually spins it as well (hauritz and doherty looking at you), and he isnt too far away. He is fearless which spinners need to be. I watched the big bash final, and he threw one up there, Warner put him high into the stand, the very next ball he threw it up again and warner put it straight down the fielders throat. Most other spinners in this country (hauritz and doherty) just throw darts in at the batsmen to keep the runs down no matter the form. Lyon flights it and entices the batter to play shots, getting him wickets.
Lets face it without 20 wickets you cant win a test match

Boyce is a definate talent. gotta keep working though. he's a bit small. doesn't help him but he will overcome it if he's good enough. i know you don't have to be big and strong to be a spinner but it doesn't hurt (Warne was big through the shoulders and MacGill was likewise and also had huge ass)...

I've only seen him bowl once but i'm a big wrap for Nathan Brain for NSW. Only young a long way to go. But to confirm what i think i need to see him from over the shoulder. Was sitting at extra cover when he was bowling in a 2nd XI match a while ago. He also got hit around a bit by Rob Quiney, but Quiney was on about 80 and looking in superb touch when he came on to bowl.

Nathan Lyon gives the ball loads which is good. It's like Krezja but he looks more accurate than Krazy from the little i've seen. He's not afraid to flight it - that is so important for a spinner. Hauritz has started to toss it up more and looks better for it.

There's two problems at the moment that the spin bowlers of this country can't solve themselves
1 - captains shit themselves the moment a spinner goes for a couple of boundaries.
2 - 20/20 and the middle stages of 50-over matches encourage spinners to bowl quick through the air to avoid going for runs.

Lets face it without 20 wickets you cant win a test match

absoutely. i harp on and on about this. people go on how we can't win tests cause we're struggling to score runs.... that's true but you can still win matches with a shit batting line-up. yes it's tough obviously, low scoring puts you behind the 8-ball and you're still going to lose more than you lose if you only score 300+ one in every ten innings. but you can still win test matches. teams do defend low scores.

but if you can't bowl the opposition out twice you're playing to draw at best, which (perth aside) is where we find ourselves at the moment. i might be wrong but i think we have to go in a pretty much completely different direction with our bowling line-up. I really can't see them turning in to a consistently world beating attack. I'm also sceptical about what we've got in reserves, but i do think there is a lot coming through especially in the quick departments.

In the spinners... maybe not but there is a bit about. Hauritz is a good solid dependable offie, but surely between Lyon, Boyce, O'Keefe, Brain, Zampa we've got a better option.... Just gotta keep plugging away for now.

Doherty yes. But regarding Hauritz, that is absolute bullshit.
