Player Watch Nathan Murphy (Retired 2024)

Murphy I think will come good with his injuries he has just had some bad luck I also think he would have been in the 1 st,s this season if not for injury.

He is still only 19 and has massive upside I think he could play 200 games and yes looking at him I could see why they might have used pick 6 on him and I think in the years ahead he will become a fixture in the team.

The club really nailed it with Stephenson and Murphy in 2017 draft and I fully expect Nathan to be a very good player for the Pies in the years ahead.

194cm he could still easily be a midfielder in the vein of a Fyfe, Mundy, Bontempelli or, dare I say it, Pendlebury.

Will be interesting to see how he does pan out and what we do with him in the preseason - if we could pull a Fyfe-like player out of a hat with a Cat-B rookie signing then why not go that way?
It would be nice, but given that our most pressing need is KPP’s and he’s the appropriate heightcoupled with having an impressive leap and sticky hands, I’d be surprised if the club looked to develop in to that type, particularly given it looks like our first picks in the next 2 drafts are going to be big bodied mids (McIntyre and Daicos).
Also extremely fanciful that Wilson could go even close to reaching the heights of those players you listed, and I think he’ll be a very good player.

Murphy is still a teenager... Plenty of time!

I thought Murphy was very good against the Dawks. Until concussed anyway. Showed enough to be included in the finals depth discussion.

Break out player 2020.

(Revised from break out player 2019)

He was actually ordinary against BH. Did people not see him lose about 10 contests against sub par opposition?
I'm not writing him off, he has plenty to like, but he's not remotely close to selection.

He did some very good and some average plays. All to be expected imo.

No doubt. I'm still a big fan, he has plenty going on for him. I just feel like people are highlighting all his good, while overlooking the huge amount of contests he lost. Next year could be his, definitely not this year though.

Still has a lot to go with building his body up, hopefully another pre seasons fast tracks him because he is very talented.

Shame he wasn’t able to get on the park much this year. I’d like someone of his height and skill set down back to compliment Moore/Roughy and give us some more flexibility with the likes of Scharenberg for instance.
I’m finding it hard watching Schazza getting battered playing as a key position player. Could also allow Howe to play a bit higher if we want.
Hope he has a good pre season and puts his hand up.

IN terms of a potential replacement for Greenwood, I reckon he'll very much be in the discussion. Likely end up being a short list of Scharenberg, Aish and Murphy.

Maybe not, especially if we play GWS, poor bloke would still be having nightmares

I absolutely agree and I think that performance will prove a career killer unfortunately. It was a very tongue in cheek question though because neither Appleby or Murphy are any chance, IMO.

Murphy and Appleby will both be players. Plenty of time yet for them.

Agreed - if every player who ever had a 'mare early in their career ended up not making it clubs would only be fielding half a side every week.

As an aside the future is exciting with with the crop of 23-and-under players we have at the moment:

Genuinely excited to see what Tyler Brown can bring to the table next year - from what I've seen at VFL level he could be something seriously special.

He hasn't played all year would be ridiculous to throw him into a preliminary final it's not like he's an experienced campaigner either no chance.

I disagree. The only reason he hasn't had more senior time this year is due to injury. I think he's very highly rated and was arguably among our best in the VFL game v the Dawks until concussed. Ultimately, you'd think Shaz and Aish would have the inside running but as I say, he'll be very much in the discussion.

Gives you a starting team of something like:

FBApplebyKeaneMaynard
HBQuaynorMooreScharenberg
CMurphyT BrownAish
HFPhillipsKellyDaicos
FFC BrownWilsonStephenson
RLynchDe GoeySier
IC (from)MurrayCrockerNoble
BosenavulagTohill

8 running half backs and two legitimate forwards in that group. Need some more forward and Kp depth. On topic, Murphy won’t possibly trump Sharenberg for a spot.

I absolutely agree and I think that performance will prove a career killer unfortunately. It was a very tongue in cheek question though because neither Appleby or Murphy are any chance, IMO.
A career killer for a selector I hope you mean. Was an unfair ask of him to plan on Finlayson. To then be dropped and not get another look in is terrible player management. We simply got the selection wrong there and it was a big part of the loss.

Appleby could be in the selection mix. If we want another runner to replace Greenwood down back it's out of Appleby (fit and has played recently), Aish (off a long layoff) and possibly Varcoe. Based on that, Appleby would be some chance given Varcoe will also be in line to replace De Goey if Reid isn't available.

IN terms of a potential replacement for Greenwood, I reckon he'll very much be in the discussion. Likely end up being a short list of Scharenberg, Aish and Murphy.
What looked to be concussion late in the VFL game is now listed as a neck injury. Murphy can't take trick.
