Opinion Nathan Van Berlo: Midfield Coach

The main thing I have liked... apart from Dawson move into the midfield... is that we have used deeper midfield rotations this year... & not afraid to change things up like Sloane in the last quarter (probably learnt from GWS game).

Playing Rachele half the time in the midfield has been important too as we have the highest clearance rate when he is in there.
I think many of us knew Sloane was a midfielder was basically done with the exception being used later in matches once some of the pace has come off. In most matches whilst he was still a prime mid you'd see he had major impact on matches in the 3rd or more often 4th quarter. Trouble was by then the damage was usually done against decent sides.

As we're seeing now he still has a role to play, looks great when he comes in there for limited rotations & primarily in the 2nd half. I think he's been excellent after a rusty first couple matches. (Did look very good in preseason matches too)

Just seems that Nicks & Van Berlo are getting the balance right & learned some harsh lessons from the first couple matches which our mids badly let us down.

Hopefully this exactly what they need as coaches to get out of the back the boys in mentality & realise there's benefits to rolling more guys through there from both a work load perspective & different looks for the opposition to worry about. Obviously we are likely to remain Laird & Dawson heavy if we mount a serious push for finals this year but the Rachele balance looks good at this point in his career.

He is either deliberately playing bad experienced players in the midfield and it's his choice; or he's complicit in the selection of these players

If you're being overruled, resign. Lots of posters gave Pyke a pass saying he didn't get the group he wanted. Well, he had plenty of power after 2017 concluded to get what he wanted. He was unsackable but in the end, he and his coaches blamed the players. VB is 100% responsible for reverting to 4 man midfield and making Keays and Sloane 50% of that rotation.

How is VB 100% responsible for reverting to the old brigade? Nicks would not be overruled by the assistant midfield coach.
This is on Nicks 100%.
