Would have thought that the difference between most at a club except the elite few is generally negligable, and fluid concepts such as form make a static ranking a poor idea.

It does however explain how 'established' players seem to survive so long out of form in our team.

I wonder how they incorporate positional requirements into it? Would have thought it is perhaps more appropriate to draw up a 'depth chart' NFL style than a 1-22 list.

I dont think he meant there was a ranking as such that they went by. Rather when they selected the side based on ability and positional needs he was often the 16-22 player picked.

VB is a captain in the same mould that Cassis and Vandenbergh are captains. You'd give it to him in the hope it might make him better.

i will end up getting done for manslaughter if VB gets the nod after some of his games. Given his experience the constant clangers and dumb decisions he makes by foot drive me up the wall, tonight was no different. How some of our guys don't give him a Richo-esque spray once a quarter has me beat.

Yeah, bit early to be getting the VB party hats out after a goal to "sink" a very ordinary lions outfit. Don't get me wrong, he is very much odds on to be our next captain, but I'm still far from convinced that he'll be a particularly good one. Hope so of course.

If its purely on field, its Thompson by a mile from Rutten in second.

If its off field, its Rutten just over Vb.

Really love VB's hard approach but he's not good enough to be our captain. Again tonight he was poor in some areas.

We need to get Pavlich as our captain. It would be foriegn to our system in many ways but he needs the change and boy do we.

It would be great if it were that simple that it goes to the guy that can dominate and throw his weight around that has that kind of presence and is always selected where as VB I'd have him as one of the guys playing for his spot next season. Where as Rutten has the presence and strength as does Thommo and they are quality players that will be in the 22 every week and in the case of rutten not even hit the bench.
He doesn't even seem to be in the cast of players that stand up like Sloane, Douglas, Walker and Danger that rev the team up. If it's gonna be VB he better be getting in the gym and be crushing coal into diamonds by round 1 or we are just getting the competitive fit tryer as the role model not a brute that can force the issue.

VB will be appointed captain, but for me that is more indicitive of the mindset of the current regime rather than VB actually being the best candidate.

No it's reflective of the current ethos at the club. The coaching staff sets the standard which in turn creates the ethos at the club. The players then select the players that best fit in with the ethos.

One look at our leadership group shows that being a real honest tier that gives 110 percent is rated very highly at the club (possibly too highly) and that is reflected in our leadership voting hence why Stevens and Symes are voted leaders instead of players who seem to be more natural leaders ie Thompson.

Ok, I dont really believe that, just saying, there are other explanations for why poster x's favourite player isnt in the leadership group than what we know.

Im not sure im comfortable with people suggesting they are in a better position to recognize the leadership within the squad than the people playing the games.

Not sure it would be a poor decision, VB is so highly regarded by the players.

My concern is that he is not necessarily an automatic selection when we have a full list to choose from, though now with so many departures he probably is....confused yet?

There is no questioning his popularity or his commitment on the field. And, the captain doesn't have to be our best player.
