Nathan Vardy

Was sitting here with my brother watching yesterday's game. Everytime Vardy had the ball we both thought we were watching Jack Hawkins.

Anyone old enough to remember Jumping Jack think that there's any similarity?

I'm surprised that only one poster has mentioned this. If Vardy moves like anyone from Geelong's past it's clearly John Newman. Very similar build (Newman wasn't as tall) and very similar movement. If Vardy can develop like that I'll be extremely happy.

Steve Reynoldson and Peter Johnston were superb marks. They couldn't kick to save their lives, but they could both take a great grab.

although Vardy is quite an exceptional kick given his size.
Has a beautiful kicking action, probably a reason why many Cat supporters look at him as being a key position player.

He's got the aerobic capacity to become a similar player to Naitanui, not suggesting he's in the same class but not many can ruck as well as Vardy or have the kicking/mobility game that he currently has.

I know that the thread has morphed slightly into playing ability comparisons with past players, all I was saying is that physically and to the eye (apart from being taller) he looks a lot like Jack Hawkins did.

Jumpin was may favorite as a kid. One thing to remember though is the size difference. Vardy is ruck height st 198 while Jumpin was only 191 so basically Joel Corey playing at CHB.

In the old days Turbo, anyone 190 cm or thereabouts was a KPP or even a ruck. Now we have rovers around that height.

Vards would be a giant by the standard of the old days,

Remember John Barnes? He was a midget as far as ruckmen go (193 cm!) but his leap was fantastic and he could compete with the likes of Harry Madden (206 cm).

yeh fantastic vertical leap and he was able to sustain the leaping well into his 20's.

Remember the day he landed awkwardly at Princess oval and his arm was like distorted and shit..ugly injury.

Too far back for me Fred. But if you were a former headmaster at Chilwell P.S., then you might remember me as a little tacker in the 70s.
I can't spell, but I have 3 degrees, you'll be pleased to know. :)

I'm pleased for you about the degrees, but it wasn't me at Chilwell.

Funny that, have always thought Tomahawk reminded me of Jack Hawkins, odd hey.
Then on Saturday, we thought Vardy looked like Tom.
Suppose that makes sense.

Reynoldson was an iffy mark
PJ was superb, but the worst kick ever.
IIRC.

Jefferies and Hawkins back then were great marks and average kicks

I saw Steve take some fantastic high marks. PJ was soul destroying. Magnificent mark, then a heart breaking mongrel kick. You could see the team deflate around him.
