Ah ... they didn't sign the deal because of the performance of the "previous NBN".
No they didn't sign because under MT's new NBN agreement iiNet would have to cover Customer any Service Guarantee payments and any charges for failures for faults which NBN co maybe responsible for.

South Korea Will Invest $1.5B On Building A 5G Network That Will Be 1K Times Faster Than Existing Speeds And Allow 1-Second Movie Downloads

...
The speed on the current 4G network in the country is 75 megabits per second, or Mbps, according to ZDNet. The 5G network will allow users to download an 800-megabyte movie file in one second, compared with the 40 seconds it takes under 4G, media reports said, citing the science ministry.

'Fastest ever' broadband speeds achieved in fibre test

The "fastest ever" broadband speeds have been achieved in a test that hit 1.4 terabits per second – enough to transmit 44 high-definition movies in just one second.

British Telecom (BT) and French networking equipment company Alcatel-Lucent conducted the test on the existing fibre network in London, with the hope of maximising the efficiency of the current infrastructure and avoiding costly upgrades.

http://www.itwire.com/it-policy-new...erestimate-labor’s-nbn-cost-admits-government

When asked by iTWire about the disparity between the Coalition’s $90 billion estimate of a FTTP network and the much lower NBN Co estimate (made by the management team the Coalition had put into place) of $56 billion, the best Fletcher could say was that the Coalition estimate “may have been a little high.”
Is this the first admission from the Government that they lied while in opposition?

When reading through this article i came across an understatement of some magnitude from both parties.

The comments follow a concession from Turnbull’s parliamentary secretary Paul Fletcher, who said at an IT forum on Monday that the Coalition’s estimate of the previous Labor government’s NBN plan “may have been a little high.”

An internal review costed the plan at $56 billion, rather than the $90 billion price tag the Coalition flagged in the lead-up to the federal election. The Labor government had estimated it would cost $37.4 billion.

Just Heard Joe Hockey Press conference saying Australia governments must invest in its inter-structure, Pity that does not seem to be the case with the NBN. The majority of Australian will be left with a compromised FTTN using a degrading cooper network.

Would have thought this was important infrastructure Joe?.

I saw that, it was good, he spent most of the time piling shit on Labor while at the same time praising the QA and stimulus packages that were used overseas during the GFC, these seem to be good if used anywhere but Australia. I think Joe is getting a but confused, but my he's good at platitudes.

I think it actually goes deeper than that. Australian political journalism focuses on the competition between politicians, framing it as a clash of personalities.

We're poorly served when it comes to analysis of policy.

NBN chairman Ziggy Switkowski said the rollout in Tasmania would begin using the existing copper network and that the fibre-to-the-premises rollout would not be completed.

“We’ve now agreed on a multi-technology mode, where we will seek to use existing copper network where we can,” he said.
This paragraph is key. Some areas will still be fttp, including any multi dwelling premise. If the decision to implement in an area is on practical and cost grounds, not political or to please lobbyists, then the final outcome might well be the best available

The criteria of multi technology selection document applicable to a local area will be very interesting
