Shaping up to be a pretty interesting first round. You've got Petracca, Brayshaw and McMartin seemingly locked in as the first 3 selections, as well as Moore to Collingwood at #9. Those 4 are you'd think the only guarantees not to slip out to us at #14 (thankfully none of them are tall defenders or outside midfielders) - so with the remaining 9 picks before we come into the draft it sounds like there are maybe 14 players who could possibly be in the mix and could go in any order.

KPD: Lever, Goddard, Durdin, Marchbank
KPF/Ruck: Wright
Mid: Laverde, De Goey, Pickett, Weller, Duggan, Ahern, Cockatoo, Menadue, Ellis
Utility: Langford

Of that list Goddard, Durdin, Marchbank, Cockatoo, Weller & Duggan seem to be the most attractive options likely to still be around once GWS, Collingwood, GC, Geelong, West Coast, Richmond & Freo have had their pick (Lever would be ideal but it seems unlikely he'll slide past 10). Would be happy with any of them to be honest from what I've seen and read of them, I guess this is what Noble meant when he said it was a pretty even draft in terms of quality in that mid-late first round range.

McMartin must have come out of nowhere.

So you get the most pressing needs at 1 and 2. Ie. Ahern and Rainbow
Then the development players Ramsay and Read with the next two.

All of Walker Jenkns Jacobs Lowden Osborne Talia Hartigan and Siggins should have 8 years plus left at AFL level.
Yeah I like that, I honestly feel that every position but inside mid needs addressing. Pods and Osbourne won't help us in the future so a key forward and ruck should be drafted at some stage.

Well Noble said this morning on radio the golden rule is trade for need and draft for talent. Has Cheney filled the defensive need? Do we overlook a Marchbank type and go for the raw talent of a Garlett?

Such a mystery this draft

You'd think go for the raw talent like Gartlett

What exactly is Gartletts Pro's/Con's?
Skippos has a great write up on him in his phantom. I did post it in this thread a while ago.

Pro's - explosive speed, kicks both feet equally, runs both ways

Con's - Skippos believes the main difference between he and Pickett is that Garlett will allow his run to be closed down sooner and look to give off, whereas Pickett will keep running the lines.

That may just be an experience/confidence thing.

Soft spot for Brisbane
You'd have to think a couple of Lever, Goddard, Durdin, Weller and Wright will still be on the table. That's a good result - a few moving up (Ahern, de goey, Langford, Duggan, maybe Ellis) that we wouldn't be interested in.

If we got him I am guessing he will be playing on the HF Flank?

He also said the first three picks would be talent but if you get 3 of the same type you draft for need with the last.

So basically none of us have a clue who we will get but it's got to be a dark horse to risk going from 10 to 14.

Or they just think the draft is even in that range?

Noble didn't really give anything away there did he? "Talent" could mean any of the 1000 players who nominated for the Draft.

It doesn't work like that mate...
You really think Lowden, Hartigan, Siggins and Osborne will have 8 years in the AFL system?
If one does I will be amazed...
More likely 3 of the 4 are finished by 2017...
Hence the reason why our big man needs outweigh our need for speed

You know that is such a cliché but in practise hard to achieve. If you trade for need then you give away the picks you need for talent .
An example is how Port have weaken their draft selections to get the player in the position they thought they needed to strengthen.
It looks to have made them a better team on paper!

The one factor that has plagued us and we all know it, is those lost 1st and 2nd round picks two years in a row.
It has crippled our development and was a price too high. It stifled any manoeuvring in the last couple of years and now we need quality at a few positions and more depth in all.
Did we jump shadows and negotiate our way into trouble fearing the worst or was it really a wise move? Did our infraction warrant a self imposed penalty of that magnitude. Melbourne got away with tanking and it was the individuals that cop the brunt of the sanctions and indirectly us as well. One things for certain it's put us in a world of pain.

I've been a big advocate for a defender with our 1st pick (Lever my first preference but seeming out of reach)but a lot of posters are giving a compelling argument that under the 'golden rule scenario' a quicker type has come into calculation.
So much speculation with this draft; the rumours of sliders and bolter's are really muddying the waters. The new coach and his game plan is hard to get a handle on at this early stage.
We know he wants team defence and high work rate but does he rate speed over a dominant KPP for our first choice?
How much discussion has been generated by dropping 4 places in the first round and will getting back into the 2nd round really be advantageous if we miss a gem (IMO) like Lever if he goes 10-13 ?

Peter J is so right this draft is a mystery and lately my opinion fluctuates all the time. I just don't know what the clubs 1st priority is this year.

Hearing more about Brayden Maynard. Video footage is quite impressive, and apparently is tenacious and as tough as nails. Range is between 15-50... Could we run the gauntlet and pick him at 14? Is that why we dropped back? Just a thought.

Why wouldn't we be interested in Duggan? Outside mid with a beautiful left foot.

I'm mad keen on Lever, will be frustrating if he makes it to 10. I'm still in on Menadue but feel we end up with Goddard/Marchbank/Durdin.

I think there's no doubt we've had a close look given the F/S scenario. I imagine he would be squarely in the frame for our 35 if he's still there - left footers are high priorities it seems too.
Can't see him going at 14, although I agree with your premise.

Doesn't sound like Duggan will have the tank or leg speed to be a true outside mid. Character guy with good leg who'll play off a flank.
