Ok. Guessing game.

Who were the 3 guys that we rated in between Dangerfield (3) and Ebert (7)

We rated him at 3??!?!?!?!?!?!??!. And at one stage higher than Cotchin... sheesh. If Dangerfield was gone... would we have picked Ebert who we rated at 7? I'll trust Rendell on this one because we have numerous scouts watching games but Rendell isn't the sort of guy you really trust... I guess different clubs rate different players.

The impression I got was yes, so I would assume our 4th-6th rated players were already picked

I just faind it funny that every year, every club gets player they rated in their top 20-25! :D

Sometimes I start to think that the clubs themselves sometimes start to believe their own propaganda :D

The only HUGE question mark I have is on Dangerfield. To me its just a enormous risk to pick him ahead of the highly rated local kid AND have him stay home for another year. Thats just a huge risk for an AFL club to take.

The question I have in this is that Dangerfield is obviously bottom aged so where the hell does he play his footy next year?! I would think that his eligibility for the TAC Cup goes out the window as soon as he gets drafted and he will need to find a VFL club to play for and then it raises another question, why exactly would a VFL club look after the interest of a player that they know they will only have for a year. We have enough trouble with our own SANFL clubs what are the chances we get VFL club to develop the kid the way we want to?! Fat, buckleys, and **** all! :(

We do LOVE our Calder Cannon boys though. What did we pick up today, another 2-3?! In couple of years time, half our side will be from Calder Cannons :D

And people thought we like WWT players :p

Probably the first ever AFL listed TAC Cup player.

Stiffy..random thought.

Would you call what he did ie saying he would stay home for year 12 draft tampering...or am I being paranoid :o
I think it would come close, no doubt! This is one of the most unusual circumstances in an AFL draft.

It happens a fair bit in the NBA with european players where clubs draft them and leave them for a couple of years in europe to develop but for an AFL club to draft a kid from the interstate and have him stay at home for 12 months before coming over... well, its unusual!

I sure as hell hope the kid is worth the wait because if he is not, the club will cop it in bucketloads and rightly so and no amount of bullshit artisty will get them out of this one.

Stiffy - Dangerfield himself said that he will still be playing TAC next year.
Now that is highly unusual! I thought you lose that right as soon as you get drafted! At least he will be getting a game against his own peers, hopefully developing with our own traning program that we would draw out for him and coming over in 2009 ready to play but jeez.....

This move by the AFC requires balls of steel, if it works out they are a bunch of geniuses but if it doesn't....

Luke Ball did the same thing in the year that he was drafted Stiffy. It was put out there that he would not be playing AFL in his first year for school and study reasons.

St Kilda still drafted him at #2.

If the player is genuine, and there's no doubt that Dangerfield is, it means very little other than there won't be the temptation to play them before they're ready.

Xavier Ellis was in the same boat as well wasn't he?

I am aware of that, I just wasn't sure if they could play in the U18s TAC Cup as opposed to the VFL affiliate of their AFL team.

I'll post my thoughts in a bit as I've been spending a lot of the afternoon watching footage of these guys as I have access to a range of TAC Cup games. I've also read every thread except the Dangerfield monster, which I'm about to start!

First thing I'll say though is that I don't think Dangerfield can play TAC Cup. Daniel Currie from Sydney did the same thing this year and stayed in Melbourne for schooling, but he did not play for the Northern Knights.

Not to sound creepy or nothing, but I've been awaiting your arrival all day.

what rock have you been living under?

of course you trust Rendell. the problem is that he is too honest.
you can be sure is telling you the way it is.

argue whether you think he's right, but he's going to say nothing or tell you straight up. how do you not trust him?

No. I think it is absolutely fantastic. one of the highlights of the draft.

seriously I am not taking the piss.

incredible news. :thumbsu:

Agreed.

I would have vomited if we had taken a ruckman this year.

The club targeted players for those positions where we desperately needed them - and got them.

I think we've done it right and done well. As always, time will answer whether we have or not.

I'm going to have to post my thoughts tomorrow. Possibly not until tomorrow night as I've got a busy day tomorrow.

I've watched a couple of Dangerfield's games on DVD and will get through the other blokes tomorrow afternoon. While it's all well and good to draft from Victoria from my perspective they could've done a better job drafting kids from teams that I saw a heap of during the year! I caught (or have on DVD) five Falcons games (one of which Dangerfield got injured in the first quarter) so I've seen a bit of him. I've also seen a fair bit of Kite with the Cannons (four or five times). With the others I saw Oakleigh and Sandy three times each I think, but Otten and Cook missed one game each. I didn't see either of Armstrong's games with Calder, but I saw all NSW Championship games. A certain Pick 75 ensured that I caught all of NSW's games.

BTW, Cook is NOT from the VFL despite what some have said. He played for the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup. I think the confusion might come from the fact that as I recall Rendell only said Sandringham as his club. The assumption then, is that he's talking about Sandringham VFL.

Haha, vic crow i thought the exact same thing can't wait to hear some of your opinions on our vic lads!! I thjnk you should take control of these lads in the locker room if you can please as you may well have the best access to these kids and can give us some weekly best player if the appear in the herald or the age! let us know, your a valuable member to all of us state based supporters!

The difference between Dangerfield and Ellis/Ball is that Dangerfield was drafted by a club from a different state to which he is studying in. The club must really rate him highly to let him do this.

I am thrilled with the Crows Post 2007 recruitment.

Over the past 3 seasons the crows have become "Crowbots", we have lost speed, flexibility and some magic and unpredictability

Craigy and Rendell have obviously outlined a strategy to identify players that have speed to burn, can play numerous roles and take the game on.

Dangerfield, Cook, Otten, Armstrong, Jacky, all have pace to burn, all take on the game, especially the two aboriginal boys, they have a touch of Magic, throw in Gallman and Symes, suddenly we have lost the "Crowbots / Dad's Army" tag
