Howe - a midsize forward who two years ago was playing bush footy but has been a huge hit in the tassie state league the season just gone. Can leap.

I like the assessment of Howe.

Full-forward with an explosive leap. Runs well, has good skills on both sides of his body, is athletic and reads the play quite well. Represented Tasmania at the 2009 NAB AFL U18 Championships.

Bigger and more skillful version of Robbo?

Smart going for Cook over Darling.
Jeremy Howe havnt heard much of him hopefully he gets a good run next year though.

Carlton have snagged Luke Mitchell at 42. Looks like we could get Callum Sinclar at 50 or 53.

Why? I thought the general consensus was that Darling was the better player

I must admit i was all over picking Darling earlier in the year but he doesn't look like having any upside and can't jump. Cook looks to have a frame where he could build on and is very athletic. I think i personly like the combination of Cook and Watts more than Dalring and Watts.

Good that we are going tall, Troy Davis could pretty much knock Warnock back out of contention aswell.
Tom Mcdonald looks like a long term project player like Spencer/Gawn/Fitzpatrick..

very good point darkside, wayyy to early to be making a call either way about any of these kids. I have faith in our FD

As do I. However you get worried when the only profile pick that they had on the Fox coverage for Melbournes selections was Cook...

That said we have a lot of high profile top 20 selections on our list so could afford to take some risks.

So 2 Dees supporters going interstate.

Hopefully they get homesick..

Obvious we tried to fill some needs, rather than going for best available.

I have every confidence it BP and co, but Im disappointed we seem to have abandoned the best available philosophy completely tonight (this morning London time).

I understand Cook but after that Im unsure.

How do you know that? Cook is very talented and could very well have been our highest rated player available - he was the 3rd tall forward taken (with not much between him and Lynch) so it's hardly a surprise for him at 12. Howe is a bolter and not a big key forward either, I presume he was drafted on best available, we aren't desperate for medium sized marking forwards. Davis is a key defender, not a position we were desperate for.

The last pick of McDonald, we seem to take our time, it could be said we were discussing whether to go for best available or another tall. But maybe McDonald was best available and the toss up was him or a more balanced pick.

Yeh like I said Im completely ok with Cook at 12 although imo there were more talented players still available imo.

I just dont think we needed to stay tall after that.

Draft summary (Barry Prendergast)

"We had a slant towards talls, but we ... just thought that the players we picked were pretty much the best available at those particular picks. Troy Davis has got a body that could quickly step up to playing in the AFL and so has Tom McDonald, so while the talls can quite often take a longer period of time, these guys - at least three of them - we'd expect to step up quickly.

"We acknowledged that tall forwards were an area that we needed to bolster in our list, but we were able to get what we were after at the opportunities that presented. Like every club ... we're very happy.

Hird, Swan and Grant weren't profile picks. Like you said though we have about 15 first round draft picks in our starting 22, and a few others I think.
