Opinion National Gambling Exclusion Registrar

I was thinking last night that gambling ruins so many people's lives, and the prevalence of online gambling sites are abundant these days, it's almost impossible to ban yourself from all of them.

Some of these sites make it really hard to close your account and it's not as easy as clicking a button. On some gambling websites you even have to send in a written letter to them, which frankly I find embarrassing.

So why don't we have a national exclusion registrar where you can put your name and address along with your ID in, and it'll block you from signing up to or gambling on any websites. The same way that people can get themselves excluded from the pokies.

This should be mandatory and it wouldn't be hard to integrate this into something like mygov.

We are becoming a society of compulsive gamblers and as our kids get exposed to the plethora of disgusting gambling ads which use dirty tricks like making the volume higher or making it seem like you're not really losing anything, I fear the problem is only going to spiral out of control.

This registrar should be enforced by law just as gambling sites do have to abide to certain laws.

At the very least, it should be enforced to those on Centrelink, forgetting the idea of a basics card as it's been proven that idea doesn't work.

What do you guys think?

Good idea, in fact I'm mildly surprised it doesn't already exist. Although it's not hard to see why gambling interests would be against it, apart from losing revenue they would also have to create infrastructure around making sure they were compliant

Do we really need more Government control over us?

My Health Record and now this proposal!
I assume the proposal would be that it’s a voluntary measure, although I agree if it extends to being mandatory for those receiving welfare benefits then yes it does open privacy concerns and the like.

At the same time, I can see how an argument can mount that if you’re receiving welfare benefits/state help then the last thing you should be doing is sinking the money into gaming. How much control do we give to the state to dictate how the welfare they distribute should be spent? I’m all for conditions more on the stringent side but I know I’ll cop a bit of flak for such an opinion.

That would incredibly hard to implement on individual's peoples computers... then you have smartphones too, plus there are countless online gambling websites and people can just VPN to get around the bans, or get a new phone, or just go to a TAB in person... Huge logistical effort for little return.

You can't save people from themselves, there is an extremely strong war on drugs from every angle yet drug addicts will always find a way to get another hit.

I actually don't think that having to write a letter is that bad, sure there's admin involved if you have to send one to every company but if someone is serious about breaking the addiction then surely its not too onerous an ask. They'd probably only need info like email, phone, home IP, possibly device serial numbers and maybe something confirming identity. There's always the physical locations but I don't think it should be up to the companies/the state to go to that much trouble to protect people from themselves

never happening because it would be political suicide to do :(

Good idea.

It would be relatively difficult to enforce, as it would require bookmakers with a license to operate in Australia to observe the register when creating new accounts, as well as closing the existing accounts.

It would also necessitate those same bookmakers applying the same proof of identification standards to opening an account as they do to attempting to withdraw your funds!

You could still bet in cash at a TAB though, or at the track, casino etc.
