National Service scheme was reintroduced in 1965. The cause was both Government concerns with Australia's capacity to deal effectively with direct security concerns in the region. The Government doubted the Army's capability to deal with, in the worst case, any commitment to Vietnam, the Indonesian confrontation of Malaysia, or any conflict in Papua-New Guinea on the common border with Indonesia.
This period of national service involved, for most of the period, two years full-time duty. Selection was not universal but based on a selective system employing a ballot. The National Service Act provided for conscripts to be liable for overseas service. Some conscripts did see service in Malaysia and Singapore, as well as Vietnam.
Is this something more likely as we follow America into more hotter spots?
The reasons above sound eerily like what is occuring today. With concerns to security in the region to our commitment in Iraq
I also feel it may be another way to hide the unemployment rate.

When the Draft Comes Marching In
Oh when the draft, comes marching in
Oh when the draft comes marching in
I hope they don't call your boy's number
When the draft comes marching in
Oh when our boys, go overseas
Demand for troops starts to increase
We'll wonder why Mr. Bush ever went there
When the draft comes marching in
We bombed Iraq, without allies
A place with no Al Qaeda ties
And as the chaos grows ever larger
We'll watch the draft come marching in
When we believe, that war-hawk spin
And betray allies and the U.N.
Oh they might call that "strength" on the talk shows
Until the draft comes marching in
Now when it comes, your boys will go
The sons of the elite, they will not show
They'll find a way out, just like some of their daddies
When the draft comes marching in
Chorus
