I have seen the drawings of the new stand and its features - Looks amazing and nothing to do with the JD stand remains
think big high glass over looking the ground with function rooms.
It sounds awful. We've been used to seeing it here grandstand when driving down Punt rd for over 100 years, now we look at a glass building covered on corporate wank.

Its not a glass building but more 2nd level tier thats glass

The old JD stand was a relic and not maintained and restored im happy to move on and have a state of the art facility with under ground carparking function rooms and separate ladies change rooms etc etc.

A relic? An important part of history it was.

one that was infested and falling apart
it is beyond repair.

Its only important part of history due to our club and the club remains
30 years ago is the last time i sat in that stand and it was sh!t then and worse today and totally useless so whats the point in keeping something that occupies so much space that is unusable.

Opened by the Prime Minister, very important during world war 2, architecturally significant and 112 years old.
The National Trust thinks it should be retained.

exactly, it was. Jack dyer is an important part of our history and forever will be. A stand is not. Punt road is an important part of our history and even more important part of our FUTURE. the stand is not.
Well better informed people than you and me, and the National Trust disagree.

We have a 120 year old house down the rd which is also heritage listed thats full of squatters and about to fall over itself but not worth repair or rebuild as the land is so small its just not worth it. but nothing can be done.

I agree that it does have historical value but it is just not viable to keep it the way it is or to spend the money to just have something to look at rather than use. My school in Richmond was also used during the 2nd ww and is now gone and to be honest whats the significance of the place being used during a period of time ?

If it could have been built around whilst maintaining features it would have been great but its just way too far gone apparently to do that

The national trust is an organisation with its own interests just like government, the RFC, etc etc

Also interesting that the PM running 1km down the road from parliament house on his tea break to say some words at an architectural unveiling (much rarer in those times) is somehow significant, yet now a project backed by the government including financial funding is insignificant??

What year did politics gain/lose its value?

Or are we just cherry picking things to suit our own opinion of whether the stand should be kept or not?

Yeah but he was a historical Prime Minister....

The national trust wants everything retained, however, never wants to contribute to the cost of maintaining it. Where have the national trust been for the last 55 years whilst the stand fell into total disrepair?

The national trust is just an organisation that represents the views and values of a select portion of society. It's not a concrete moral code for living life. There are plenty of things more significant than a man made building that "exist" at punt road. Depends on your world view and values.

If the project has the backing of club/board/members and government why would the national trusts world view hold more value?

It's not a 'select portion of society', it is the whole of society and future generations.
Why is it lesser if it's a man made building?

Because all sorts of organisations act in their own interests that may not serve the interests of the the broader community?
Exactly my point. Why is the national trust valued higher than 5 other parts of society? They're not a saintly collective beamed from the almighty heaven (cause there's only one right?), They're just another organisations with their own interests.

It's not less, it's just different. Not all members of society value the same things. If the national trust was the night and day answer to a good future why is it not the most powerful organisation in the country?

Here's one way it might work out better.... There is a precedent in this thread of looking at art and photos of current/past structures and discussing their beauty, what they stood for and why they're important. Why not preserve the history in these methods and incorporate it into written and oral records, rather than present a run down unusable and impractical grandstand to the future generations?
