The Spurs are basically the Geelong of the NBA.

- Small/mid market team. Not from a big city.

- 90s consistent success but failed to break through. Eg infamous 95 Rockets series

- Had a bit of luck. Got Duncan pick 1 from 3rd in the lottery. Geelong had father sons

- Drafted smartly and developed talent. Eg Parker, Ginobili vs Ling, Enright, Stokes etc. Traded George Hill for Kawhi (pick 15) in 2011. Geelong develop players from minor leagues eg Taylor, Blicavs, Kelly, Podsiadly, Stewart. Spurs with Bruce Bowen, nobody who became umpteen time All NBA defensive, and famous for recruiting international players, a pioneer in that

- Won 3 in 5: 03, 05, 07.

- 22 playoff appearances in a row, best in NBA history. Geelong 15 in 17 is greatest run of modern era.

If Geelong can win 2021 against Richmond after a long drought of finals failings, it'll be like Spurs turning the tables on Miami in 2014. This parallel would really have legs!

Hawthorn's a bit like the LA Lakers- power club with an 80's dynasty and a 3peat this century. Wear yellow/gold.

Adelaide is the Houston Rockets- back-to-back flags in the 90s. Adelaide's repeat effort from 5th on the ladder (1998), Houston defended their title from 6th seed and a very average 47-35 record (1995). Have made playoffs plenty since but no more trophies. Got close though- Adelaide in 2017 and Houston in 2018 before Paul's injury and poor shooting in Gm 7 vs Warriors.

St.Kilda is the Utah Jazz- small market club lost Finals 2 years running. Not quite clutch enough and denied by greatness. (Jordan's Bulls). One of the all time greats retired flag-less. Nick Riewoldt and Karl Malone.

Collingwood under Buckley is a bit like the 90s Knicks. Power clubs. Coll lost tight GF and prelim. NY Lost tight 1994 Finals. Famous moments remind us of their failings- Sheed's goal. Ewing's missed layup vs Indiana and the "Charles Smith game" vs the Bulls.

And some commentator in the opening AFLW game the other night calling a shepherd a screen, annoys me greatly how the AFL media commentator people try to draw comparisons and use b-ball / American football terms when calling or talking about Aussie rules

Port Adelaide Bobcats Hornets. Established 1988, 2002 was a name change.

Geelong Bucks. Kings of the regular season and individual awards.

Adelaide Knicks. Big brother in a two team town that has somehow imploded to the point of being the ugly stepsister.

Both leagues are subject to rule changes that essentially incorporate increased scoring. AFL failed as coaches continued to be risk averse. NBA succeeded as stars rule and no one else matters.
