Maybe I don't pay enough attention while people talk about the 60s and 70s, but other than Russel was there people that were known for their defense back then?
They did record All-Defensive teams back then, so we can at least look at that. When I picked Walt Frazier over Isiah Thomas, part of that was because Frazier made 7 All-Defensive First teams. I had never thought of him as a defensive player before that.
There are also a few basic advanced stats that look at defence, and when you read about some of the older players, defence is mentioned for some of them. So there's a few things to go on.
Looking at my team and the number of times they've been named to All-Defensive Teams in their career:
Frazier - 7
Jerry West - 5 (that surprised the hell out of me too)
Dr J - 1
Garnett - 12 (2nd most of all time)
Kareem - 11 (#4 all time)
Kyrie Irving - 0
Gervin - 0
Paul Pierce - 0
Antetokounmpo - 1
Centre TBC
So 4 of my 5 starters were very strong defensively and even Dr J made 1 All-Defensive team in the ABA. Bench provides a scoring spark and some versatility and defence with Antetokounmpo. As mentioned before, I had wanted Mutombo to anchor my 2nd unit.
