NBA All Time Mixer Draft

Maybe I don't pay enough attention while people talk about the 60s and 70s, but other than Russel was there people that were known for their defense back then?

They did record All-Defensive teams back then, so we can at least look at that. When I picked Walt Frazier over Isiah Thomas, part of that was because Frazier made 7 All-Defensive First teams. I had never thought of him as a defensive player before that.

There are also a few basic advanced stats that look at defence, and when you read about some of the older players, defence is mentioned for some of them. So there's a few things to go on.

Looking at my team and the number of times they've been named to All-Defensive Teams in their career:

Frazier - 7
Jerry West - 5 (that surprised the hell out of me too)
Dr J - 1
Garnett - 12 (2nd most of all time)
Kareem - 11 (#4 all time)

Kyrie Irving - 0
Gervin - 0
Paul Pierce - 0
Antetokounmpo - 1
Centre TBC

So 4 of my 5 starters were very strong defensively and even Dr J made 1 All-Defensive team in the ABA. Bench provides a scoring spark and some versatility and defence with Antetokounmpo. As mentioned before, I had wanted Mutombo to anchor my 2nd unit.

So Wacky Tiger is skipped, don’t understand how he hasn’t picked as he’s been online all day but ah well

I’ll take my HOF player now. Injuries and drugs crippled him without doubt, but at his peak he was reportedly on track to becoming an all time great, not far behind the top tier. I need some more athleticism in my bench, too

I’ll take David Thompson

I'm going to take the best available centre who wore a number over 40.

I don't think anyone really knows how he would fare in the modern NBA, but you can't argue with the resume of a man who quite literally revolutionised the game.

Yeah, the team is full of wings now but that's the modern NBA and my collection of old timers may as well have something modern going for them. If need be, I'll give Lebron minutes at PF and rotate my wings heaps.

Faaaark you!! :P

After selecting a modern day PG with my last pick, I'm going back to the 1970s to select a defensive anchor for my second unit. It was asked the other day whether players from the 60s or 70s other than Bill Russell had a reputation for good defence. There are a few, but I chose to bite my tongue to save this guy for my pick.

Artis Gilmore (HOFer)

ABA MVP in 1971-72.
11x All-Star
5x All-Defensive team including the only player to be named in the ABA all-defensive team every year of the league's existence.
Looks like a big, powerful beast in the middle. Everything I read says he was a great interior defender. Highlights look powerful, but also very smooth with a decent jump shot. He doesn't look too immobile to adapt to today's game.
And seeing as I missed out on Bob McAdoo with his set of mutton chops, I'm ecstatic to get the chance to add Gilmore with a mean Fro and set of Mutton Chops.

Old boy Bob Cousy came out of a 6 year retirement at age 41 to play 34 minutes in 7 games for the Cincinnati Royals.

We'll move him to the the 39+ category and open up the 5-time All Star slot.

Now that that's taken care of, I selected 8-time All Star, Yao Ming.

You've got to be kidding me that not one of the guys on my roster (that I can easily switch) played when they were 39 OR got arrested? Cmon...

I mean there’s still quality guys out there that fit those categories, all hope isn’t lost :P

Anyway you’ll probably pick up someone better than Robert Horry ;)
