Really out of the blue......

On a positive note
Goulding did some pre-season work with the Cleveland Cavaliers last October before coming home to star for Melbourne.

He returned to the US for more tryouts at the end of this NBL season and has attracted “strong interest” from NBA teams.

I don't understand the logic behind it at all. The only explanation I've heard is that some people hate the junior club with the same name. So that justifies throwing out decades of history and pissing off pretty much every one of your existing supporters?

Just baffling.

The logic is that they want to "unite" all of Melbourne's basketball fans. They think that by changing their name they'll attract Magic, Giants, Titans, Specters, Saints fans to their club.

Complete and utter bullshit. It's alienated the majority of Tigers members and the other basketball fans have voiced their opinion on the Tigers FB page that they wont support a bastardized Tigers team.

The problem that the owners also have with the junior "Melbourne Tigers" is that they do not have complete control over them.

Slepoy and Kestelman (the guys who owned Dodo) need to take their filthy ill-gotten Russian money and **** off.

im guessing the new team will wear OKC Thunder colours as they seem to be the in team.

Anticipating navy blue and white. Very "Victorian."

Stupid. Everybody has been against the move from what I've seen.

even those with a minor passing interest in the league like me are against it. some might say we are united against it.

united. lol. stupid name.

but then again you have real madrid in the euroleague. ok, same athletic club as the football team so ok.

i know, let's name the new team real melbourne united.

shit!

Lanard Copeland only started tweeting about it 3-4 hours ago and he's still super close to the team. Goes to most of the games, etc. So even to them its come out of nowhere.
I read that he's pissed as hell about it, doesn't want his retired jersey flying in a non-Tigers stadium.

I must say, I am like everybody else at the moment. In shock really........ I mean the NBL has had its best season in a long time and then they pull this. I cant imagine the Melbourne fanbase embracing this at all.

This is the bit that gets to me the most. Basically they're shitting all over the club's history and its fans for people who for whatever reason don't like the Tigers or just don't want to be fans. **** the actual fans of the Tigers, these other people who don't even like the Tigers are more important.

Yeah, the fans of teams that have already seen their own teams die due to a lack of support and poor finances.... (including one that was my first employer).

Makes a whole lot of sense. Not.

You have a guaranteed fan base that was growing (the games at the Cage were sellouts and we were getting 5-6000 people at HiSense Arena which is at least 1500-2000+ better than a year ago) and they give it up on some lunacy to 'unite' Melbourne. It's purely for selfish financial gain, as though they were gamblers going to the casino and throwing a sure thing away for a 500-1 rank outsider.

All they've accomplished is uniting everyone against them. The Magic / Titans / Dragons / Giants, etc. fans do not want them and now the Tigers members have been completely alienated.

I know one thing the NBL facebook page posted a link and its not getting any good responces. I read about 20 comments and not one was positive

Melbourne have been one if not the most iconic NBL club ever and now pull this, horrid move.
I can understand the logic, but its going to backfire by the looks of things.

Big rival games are no longer ie: Cats v Tigers and Kings v Tigers.

Shocking move, if they lose goulding they need some big marquee players to get crowds for next season it may appear.

This is a different situation, but the announcement reminds me of the time when the West Sydney Razorbacks were rebranded as the Sydney Spirit in 2008 to appeal to the whole Sydney market. The decision alienated the supporters of the Razorbacks while failing to attract any of the Kings' supporters.

When I first heard the story I checked the calendar just to make sure that April Fools' Day had been and gone.

Exactly what I thought.

The NBL had just attracted me back this season (an old Tigers fan who grew up in the 90's) - but they can well and truly jam it up their arse after this move.

Garbage.

Compromise? Call the team the South-East-North-West Giant Magic Spectre Titan Dragon Tiger Saints
