this kid's a positive, surely. we've got two years to develop him to replace mcpharlin.

for me, he is the biggest positive. He is the one player who seems to address a need. But I just dont know much about him, hence the reason I was asking about his skills and body shape. I hope he is more of a mcpharlin type than a Dawson type, as dawson will be our full back for quite a while.

he writeup sounds like it. i was happy if we found a replacement for one of pav or mcpharlin. i'm glad it's elvis as we don't have an immediate replacement for him but as i mentioned earlier, i can see mora playing forward for us next year.

He actually has speed and agility for a big guy... I wouldn't be suprised if the club thinks they have a handy swingman in the pocket. Definitely not going to get wrapped up in what he can and cant do as he is clearly raw... Play a sandilands draft prospect video or a kurt tippett one... Tall gangly guys just take time

Pretty good get given that every single decent tall (except maybe Membrey) had gone by then. At least he's a genuine tall at 195cm / good weight.

There's no doubt he's a consolation prize though. In the long pause before he was taken, you could almost hear Lloyd/Bond saying "who's left?" I couldn't believe the names between our 1st & 2nd picks - Paparone, Wright, White, Stewart, O'Brien, Clurey, Shaw, McIntosh, Close, McBean. Picking "best available" with your 1st rounder is dumb when your second round picks are late & you need to draft a key tall fwd. Way to go Lloyd.

Like the looks of the lad, seemed to have a good knack to be in the right spots a lot of the time and I never underestimate a good spoiler!

New Fremantle draftee Tanner Smith doesn’t have any issue leaving his home state Victoria to join the Fremantle Dockers in the West.“I have the opportunity to play AFL at a really good club, which is what I’ve always dreamt of.”[/QUO
He's been at boarding school for the last 18 months and is a country boy so the go home factor is lessened. Seems pretty happy to move over.

Emma Quayle had him at 23 to Brisbane

23. BRISBANE LIONS
TANNER SMITH
(18. 196cm, 87kg)
Tall, close checking defender with good closing speed.
THE RATIONALE: The Lions got their midfielder at pick No.8. Smith would become the tall they're after.
THE COMPLICATION: Others may appeal, with Tom Clurey and Tim Membrey still chances to be on the board.

Not too unhappy with this kid.

Still, the fire sale/weak deal done with GC for Broughton is now biting us on the arse. A sub 30 pick instead of 36 would've snared Shaw too. Though I still reckon we got caught in the headlights by not grabbing him at 17 anyway. Simpson will be a teriffic player but we do soooooo need a big forward. We all know that because Bond kept telling us we were gunning for talls.

I've gotta say the Quigley write up doesn't inspire me with confidence for this kid... Gees. If he is getting toweled up by Shaw, hate to think what Daniher will do to him in 5years.

While fits the KPD we need, I'll hold out on my opinion on this one me thinks.

Im convinced... Watching the freo website clips you see a lot of the hunger and athleticism the club liked... Looks like he has some serious speed for a guy who is 195+ and still possibly growing...

Could be a great mcpharlin replacement or even a forward option...

This is quite short-sighted. He's what, 18? Players do develop and grow into their bodies and their skills/coordination at different rates. It's not fair to say a 195cm 18 year old is as good as he's going to get right now.
Seems to have a lot of the right ingredients, particularly for the Ross Lyon defence.

They wanted Duffy at pick 36, but decided he would slide until pick 39 so they picked up Smith.

Read the article on Fremantefc website about Lyon's thoughts of the draft.
