DRAFT PROFILE

One of best key position players in the draft has shown his strength this year after a strong u18 Championships. After playing Under 16 championships last year as an overager, Brennan Cox has taken his game to a whole new level as a tall prospect this year. This year he has split his time between the South Australian state side, the WWT Reserves and the WWT u18’s.

This year for the Reserves and Under 18’s he has been the dominant South Australian tall. In the Under 18’s he showed dominance in the air as well as showing ability to pinch hit in the ruck at times but its at reserves level where he really impressed. He kicked 19 goals in nine games and showed some real ability up forward as he is a great contested mark. He averaged 14 disposals, four marks and a goal kicking accuracy of 73%.

In the Under 18 Championships he was just as good but played in defense where the South Australian team needed him to play. He was one of the best key position defenders during the carnival and was an easy decision for the selectors to place him at CHB in the Under 18 All Australian Team. For South Australia, he often shut down the team’s most damaging forward as well as cutting off offensive plays from the opposition.

Brennan Cox is one of few top quality key position players for the draft this year and has some traits that will see him on an AFL list for years to come. He’s versatile, has great marking ability and reads the play as well as any defender in the draft. His kicking will need some work and his ability to rebound the football is questionable at this point.

Strengths:
  • 1 v 1 contests
  • Composure
  • Intercept marking
  • Versatility
  • Contested marking
One on one, Brennan Cox is one of the best players. In one on one situations he rarely loses as he knows how to win or at least neutralise the contest. He makes sure he gets great positioning early to protect the drop zone or put the fist in to spoil. This combined with his strength make him one a great prospect whether forward or back as you know he will win his matchup when isolated.

Another thing that makes Brennan good is his composure in defense when the pressure is on. He always looks calm as he makes great decisions with the ball. This ability to be composed under pressure makes him a good player to have in defense when the opposition is kicking away as he won’t succumb to the pressure.

Brennan’s best trait as a key defender is his ability to take intercept marks. Cox is close to the best defender at reading the play as he gets great positioning and cuts off opposition plays. He plays off his man but can also go third man up in contests and help his teammates. This makes him extremely valuable as a defender as he doesn’t just lockdown on his opponent, but will be an interception threat for his team.

Cox also has the ability as a tall to play forward or back. Brennan is one of the more versatile key position players this year and makes him very valuable for a team. He can play in defense on the number one forward then move into the forward line and kick a few to help his team get over the line. This ability makes him a potential swingman at the elite level as he can make an impact at both ends.

Contested marking is another strength of Cox. Brennan is one of the better contested marks in the draft as he has immense strength and a strong grip on the footy. He outmuscles, outsmarts and often outdoes his opponents in the air as he can clunk the ball as good as anyone. This ability to clunk the ball as good as he does makes him hard to stop when he is on as he can’t be stopped.

Improvements:
  • Footskills
  • Rebounding
Cox’s foot skills is an issue that will need to be sorted at AFL level. HIs ball drop is extremely high and thus has massive room for error. He often lobs it up instead of penetrating the football, making his kicks at risk of interception. This might put off a few club as he doesn’t have the penetrating kick like other defenders in the draft pool.

Brennan is also not a natural rebounder as a key defender. He’s not the type of defender who will take the ball and run like other key defenders in the draft. This isn’t so much of a problem but a dimension he lacks as a defender and one that would put him up the order substantially.

Summary:

As a tall who can play forward or back a player who came to mind was Cale Hooker. They both can play forward or back and provide lots of strength in the air. Hooker, like Cox, reads the play extremely well and base their defense off interception. Cale’s kicking is a bit better than Cox but their game styles are extremely similar.

Cox looks likely to fall somewhere in the second round of the draft with him potentially going in the first round due to the lack of key position talent in the draft. Brennan is one of the best key defenders in the draft and could go to clubs like Hawthorn, Essendon and Sydney who all need young key talls.

In a year where key position talent is hard to find, Cox has really stood out as one of the best. His ability to play at both ends, take intercept marks and take great contested marks with ease. His skills need work but with time we could see Cox become a key pillar for a team down the track.

Really like the look of this guy. Seems to have great composure, especially for someone playing their second game. Hope he gets an extended run in the firsts.
