NEAFL- 2014

I haven't posted anything for a long time but thought I'd weigh in on the various topics of recent conversation. (I'm also on holidays, so I've got some time to kill)

Re club news - I'm involved with Qbn but didn't manage to get down to any pre-Xmas training so can't comment from first hand. But we have lost our best player over the last two seasons (Stevens to West Adelaide); a tall forward (B Klemke to the O&M); a wing/half back/midfielder (Jolliffe to the O&M); and a key defender (Cavedon to retirement in the Navy in WA).

Cheers,
Gois

Qbn seems to have a few blokes moving to and from the O&M each year - what's the consensus on how the O&M standard compares to Qbn ?

Very similar in standard however the type of football is different. The O and M play a tough inside hard at it brand on smaller softer grounds. Where is the NEAFL is much more open and quicker and harder outside type running. The quality of footballers in the O and m and NEAFL are very similar

Has Brennan actually signed for Thunder, he was named in their interested list but I don't believe they have put pen to paper. Also Liam Jurrah was listed in their interested train on list and would you bother to sign him ?
Also confused about a comment that Thunder in a separate blog have been favoured by home games over the years. Squad never train together with players coming from all over territory - Darwin, Jabiru, Tiwi Islands, Alice Springs and Gove. With that geography all SEQ clubs with the exception of trips to Darwin or Canberra play a home game every week ? Labrador is 3km from Southport, which is a little different from Bathurst Island to Alice Springs or Darwin to Alice Springs.

Sounds like NT will be strong again next year after a bit of a disappointing 2013. Your right Doc some of their players face very challenging logistical and travel issues, but having said that I think 80% of the squad is based in Darwin and I believe they have a few other allowances. Going to be a great comp in 2014 from what I've heard Aspley will be the team to beat. Picked up some great players and basically lost no players from 2013...

Peanut,
who have they recruited?

Pretty sure they have Joey daye and Gavin grose and a couple of morning side boys for starters...

Agreed they will be right up there as one of the teams to beat. Looking forward to a high standard of footy in 2014

2010premier,

The 2 boys mentioned above will have to prove themselves as players one would think and unless the Morningside boys recruited are in the vein of Tangles etc, they too might struggle to get in the starting line up for 2014. John Blair will have tough job in selecting his first game line up after Aspley's great year last season.

Doc, in answer to your question on favouring NT having home games, I think that comment was made regarding the umpiring - as most of us would agree their travel schedule alone would cruel most politicians let alone footballers who have to travel and then play an 100 minute game of footy and then travel home again.

Gave Grose will make Aspleys team, i think Spackman and Holman have gone there if so both will be capable of making it....

I believe Matt Payne has also returned from Vic. Holman, Buntain and Joyce from M'side, Grose from Vultures and Daye from West. Considering they only lost Clarke and Conway they will be a much stronger outfit in 2014.

Spackman is at Panthers. Buntain,Holman,Daye,Payne will be in starting 22. Only Reid,Conway,Nutta to be replaced. Some loyal players over past years will miss out and be playing for Sandgate,Grange or Uni. Welcome to the new Neafl.

That can only b a good thing chikka IMO, improves the standard below as well. No one has a right to play NEAFL footy no matter how many years they have been at a footy club. Based on what you guys are saying re Ashley, southport, nt, reckon the afl will be stoked. This is exactly what they were planning with the changes.

smy,
don't forget Redlands... have gained some guns as well.

for example,
Steve Wrigley ( Lions)
Luke Scott ( Mt Gravatt)
Cleve Hughes ( Southport)
Josh Smith ( Morningside )
Darren Pfeiffer ( Port Adelaide)
I hear they have lost Pullman, but Hughes will more then fill that void.
They will be ultra competitive as Southport, Aspley will be.
But will it be enough to match the AFL ressie sides come finals time.?
Reckon the Suns might be the surprise packets this season, now coach Shaun Hart is gone...great footballer, but not a good coach at this level imo. his new role at Port Adelaide suits his ability.

Thanks Peeler.
How do match payments compare between Qbn and O&M ?

Depending on the club and d mind you this is pure speculation. Albury and Yarrawonga who blow everyone out of the water here in terms of budget would be probably around an Eastlake to Queanbeyan type budget. Not sure of the dynamics too much up there but thry would probably be a mid to lower range in the Neafl. Then there is clubs like Corowa and Myrtleford who would be substanially less, even less then say a tuggeranong. But as I say its all pure speculation

who will coach the Suns? good to see Aaron Rodgers land a development role (academy) at the suns, thats a few ex morningside coaches assistants that have ended up at afl clubs in a fulltime or part time capacity....

Yes good people (coaches who have good skills) will always land on their feet. Also Mitch Hahn and Murray Davis (Old Eagles) at Lions.
With new coaches at Suns interesting to see if there attitude will change in NEAFL. Interesting to see where top ups for AFL clubs will come from when the lists suffer from injuries, with the Under 18 Scorpions program be extended. Handy to play them late in the season and not the first few rounds.

Wasn't sure how they had fared over the preseason Stuy but if they have picked up players as well then will be a really good comp. Great for Rogers to be recognised and pick up a solid job with the Suns. Why did you feel Hart wasn't a good coach at this level Stuyd??
Re the top ups for AFL sides - well where do the non AFL clubs get their top ups from when their lists are cruelled by injury?? Wouldn't there be a number of boys in the U18 State squad who are going to be listed as NEAFL players with Aspley,Redlands, Southport (or a few anyway). I reckon they could come from the boys who did not make the U18 state squad but involved at Suns/Lions academy levels still.

smy, in ref. to Shaun Hart as coach of an AFL ressies side, from what Ive seen , he just did not install the ingreidents amongst his players to have a desire for success. His coaching methods had a priority of developing players for senior level status, which I understand would be a directive of the heirachy.( that's a given) , but look at the Lions and Swans ressie sides over the past 3 seasons. These coaches have not only experimented with players to get them to a senior level status, they created a desire within the list to win the comp, something Hart was not able to do,and you could see it when watching them play.Come near seasons end where it was realized the Suns ressies would not make the finals, Broadbeach belted them by some 20 goals... hello... !!!

Must say, I know Hart has put in a lot of hard work and done a lot of good things for the Suns. No doubt about that !!

Just saw on Twitter Redland have also added key position player Adrian Williams to the playing list and bolstered the coaching dept with Jason Fennell. Believe they have also signed Andrew Scott from Mt Gravatt but haven't had confirmation?
