Whilst at todays NEAFL game, i witnessed something that involved a young Lions supporter who was at the game with his father ,,, the boy would of been about 8 or 9 years of age.( wearing a lions top as his father was ) ... what happened is the half time siren went , the Lions players were walking off the field ... on the outside of the fence along walks Zorko ,, the kids father says , here comes Dayne Zorko ,,, the kid says to his dad ,, can I meet him / So Dad approaches Dayne and he talks to the young kid,,, not 40 seconds later, here walks coach Leppa ,, now the kid is on fire ,,, Leppa stops and chats to him,,, then comes Mayes, Mathieson and Christensan ,,, well the kid is doing cartwheels lol
Then comes the legend Simon Black ,,, didnt think the kid will know of Blacky ,,, so wrong ,, the kid put his hand out to shake Blackys hand and said ,, wow you played in 3 premierships ... !!!! Blacky spent some 3 or 4 minutes talking to him !!!
The kid will never forget this day , and well done to these Lions players for spending some time with him ,,,,

Stuyd,
Thanks for the report. It sounds like the Lions might have some depth building up - they have been criticised this year for having a lack of depth (perhaps because of injuries I suppose). You've got to be pleased for Leppitsh if that's the case.
I'm not sure what to make of it from the GWS point of view because they have prided themselves on having young talent to burn. Trading it away in fact. I'll be watching with interest.

On a different matter, if a player at the Swans or GWS wears jersey #49 then that means he is a top-up for the day - from the Academy but not a contracted player. Clark comes from my part of Sydney with a bullet, and might well be drafted eventually.
Good to hear that he went well.

Me again Stuyd.
Nice story about the little fan on the boundary - what a big deal for him and what a performance by those Lions guys !
Down here in Mexico, we are getting bombarded by shit stories about Parramatta players and flunkies who obviously think they are above caring about fans...in that context, I LUV your little story.

now you know why they had to abandon the Uni V Canberra match on Saturday !
jb...i heard that 2 more matches were played there after the neafl game with the last one ending when the lights failed....true?
like i said earlier, i dont understand why sydney Neafl games arent all played at Blacktown os before AFL games. IMO Henson park is a bad look for Neafl standard

Bit of a shambles on Saturday - first there was the sink hole (which was repaired) and then the lights went out later on. But the later games were completed ok after the lights came back on.
But they reckon it was just an unfortunate day and not a sign of any inherent faults with the venue.

Swans and Giants usually play their home games as curtain raisers, and I think that Brisbane and the Suns do too. As it should be.
But Sydney Uni doesn't automatically play on the blue riband grounds, just like the Brisbane community teams don't either.
Sydney Uni's "home" ground is a shocker and you wouldn't want your team to play there, so they move up a level to Henson. I don't agree that Henson is a bad look - it's got a nice feel, good spectator facilities (the 194x Commonwealth Games were held there) but it's almost round and the playing surface is a bit rough. But it's not too bad.
I don't know why Blacktown isn't used, but it would have something to do with politics and economics. It's a grand facility that holds 10,000 people, but a NEAFL game with no Swans nor Giants would attract no more than 50 people. So the atmos would be dreadful...like watching NRL on TV !!!! When I go to non-curtainraiser NEAFL games with Swans or Giants, the crowd would be no more than 80.
Henson is ok for that and is a AFL-backed facility.

Typical NEAFL to keep the important information under wraps, but anyone planning to watch the Uni v Redland game on Saturday needs to know that the venue and time have been changed just quietly.
Ally Craft, you are the mover and shaker !!!!!!

We went out to watch Sydney Uni v Redland yesterday.
The grandstand has about 1000 seats, the ground holds 10,000 and when the game started there were 17 spectators. Increased to about 30 as the game went on. You can imagine that there wasn't too much atmos. To be fair, the ground is more than 40km out of town and it's a long way to travel on a bicycle in the wind if you're a Sydney Uni student type.
Strong wind blowing down the ground so whoever kicked with it in the final quarter would have a big advantage. The game was crunching between two physical teams that were evenly matched. Seesawing scoreboard all day (or was it just the gusty wind swaying it ??) and Uni was able to kick away a bit in the last with the wind.
But, another day and the result would have definitely been up for grabs.

It's a testament to the strength of the NEAFL comp that a team as talented and disciplined as Redland is down as low as 7th, and likely to miss the action in September. I haven't seen much of Redland but I liked what I saw yesterday. Eyecatchers for me were Yagmoor across half back and Malone in the ruck - huge man with a big tank and great rucking skills.

Uni were well served by Tom Young (as usual), Barton at fullback and Aaron Day. They were a bit limited in the ruck and had a couple of makeshift ruckmen who really couldn't match it with Malone; they miss the guy who went back to Aspley this year...forgot his name. The new recruit from the AFL rookie list (Bedford) was servicable but spent more than his fair share of time on the interchange - I don't know his history but I wondered whether he might be a bit short of recent footy.

ROUND 18

Brisbane Lions v Aspley
Canberra v Thunder
Redland v Gold Coast Suns

My tips:-
Aspley
Thunder
Redland

I was in Canberra last week and the temp was -4 degrees - I tip that Thunder will freeze their nuts off......but will win anyway.
