The system works like this - The AFL reserves do as they please. Rules (which are rarely policed) states that an AFL club may nominate a maximum of 2 mature age players (over 23) at start of season. These players are eligible to play if their are 13 or less listed players in the line-up. Looking at the line-up there are probably at least 16 listed players.
Suns last year played Matthew Lappin who was clearly ineligible and then QAFL then allowed him to play finals for Labrador, and Leigh Harding played for Lions. Sam Reid also played for GWS when not a listed player (is now).

In relation to the Suns there are 5 Gold Coast QAFL clubs with lots of under 23s and also half of their Academy side available to fill the list.

Add to this the farcical manner in which the AFL Reserves treat the NEAFL finals and one questions the validity of the comp. It is a huge slap in the face to the volunteers of Qld footy who put in week and week out to be treated with such disdain.

Thunderdoc,

Thank you for your reply, ever the educated with all things football, it is a little strange when the rules are flaunted and no one seems to give a "rats rectum." it seems that if the AFL are prepared to let this slide then how can we take the top level seriously? I mean the drug saga at Essendon and the what seems to be a culture at Collingwood during the off season - One would have thought when 2 of the Qld boys got caught out via an apparent - alleged chemistry change early last year, someone (one would have thought the bloke who blames everyone but Collingwood for their faults and lack of success) may have put a broom through the locker room and cleaned it out!!!!!!

Rules are rules (Sol), we either play by and within them or we have an opening to create anarchy and in my humble opinion, when we start giving dispensations (turning a blind eye) for certain policies, for certain clubs, that have been adopted and set in stone being ever so small, then the fabric of the game we all have played and love is always brought into question - Who is controlling our controlling body???? Oh that's right the controlling body is - Is there something wrong with this type of system or am I just being the over kill kid!!!!!!!!!

It would be interesting if Aspley go down to the Sun's tomorrow at Metricom or any other side for that matter throughout the year (which could be unlikely), if a protest is not sent in for a NEAFL Rules committee ruling on this obvious breach of the rules agreed too by all of the clubs within the competition and in turn the ruling body. I am sure that if 4 competition points are put on the line, then their (The Sun's) player policy would fall into line with those created rules for the total Competition.

Watched Redland play the Lions today.... ten goal win to the Bombers ,,,,
2 issues I noticed .
1; The Lions list is very poor ,,, and appear to be not well coached ,,, Robertson was very good for them and should be in the seniors.
2; Handball handball handball.... sideways, backwards, forward to some degree,,, for god sake ,, was a joke and thats from both sides ... I thought the game was about moving forward towards ones goal posts ,,, well shit, a lot of wasted energy is going on with this game plan.
For Redland , Charlesworth was bog bagging 5 goals as well setting some up . They have a guy in the name of Christenison ( number 15) ,, I thought he did well.

Yes it could be that Lions don't register a win in either the AFL or NEAFL. Ressies only going to get worse as Seniors don't have many injuries at moment, that is a frightening thought. Perhaps they should consider a move to the QAFL just to win a game but I'd only guarantee a win against Uni and Sandgate at the moment

Impressive....we were at Sydney Uni V Thunder and were able to count the numbers in the stand.....34 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
after watching Demons v sthport a couple of things are becoming clearer. (nb i am ACT based and am watching them closely this year)
1. there is very good spirit in the team. 2 weeks in a row the boys have kept cracking in, despite being outplayed for a time.
2. they are clearly a new team and theres not a lot of chemistry there yet.
3. they are missing a couple of key posts ie FF, FB or CHB. they have been exposed here in the last 2 games.
4. mids are small. they get the footy but dont really hurt.

they are able to play some quick footy and have talent. look out if its close at 3qt time at Manuka!
