watched Dees v Giants yesterday at Queanbeyan. Game moved by AFL Melbourne from Manuka due to threat of rain. Apparently both Manuka and SCG have cricket pitches to protect so any rain will prevent 2 games being played there. I was in Canberra all weekend and if there was more than 2mm of rain I'll go he! That amount would have been put onto Manuka anyway to prepare surface. Why schedule games there if theres a strong chance they won't be played?
Perhaps Demons could have insisted on a 12pm start? Giants staff would have been stretched as well.
Anyway the game was pretty good. Giants were just that and there height in forward line was a big advantage they used well. Dees are certainly moving the ball better and troubled GWS around the ground. Thought Baker and McKay were good 4 qtr players for Dees. They hit the front in the last qtr but seemed to relax as if they would go on to win. Class from Hopper at GWS with 2 late goals steadied things.
Canberra getting closer and for the 3rd week in a row have fought games out.

It sounds as if Canberra is "thereabouts" but keeps on losing; I saw them a few weeks ago against Uni in a practice match and they were thereabouts that week too. Next week they are up against Sydney Uni who has been on fire lately. Good luck.

Can one of you banana benders fill us in on how come Brisbane Lions are fielding ten toppies when it's only Round three ? I saw them in this predicament last year but it was towards season's end and that's a little bit more understandable. It must be so hard for the main team when the club's depth is so poor.
Is it the result of poor recruiting, being injury-prone, pee hearted ?

Justa,

Yes unfortunately its all of the above but mainly the first one which then leads on too two and three, I think when the Lions recruited "Fev" some time back the Football God's said that's it, no more favours when the club just make brain dead decisions on improving their list, Other AFL Clubs don't let good stable players go, they get rid of the players they cant see fitting into their clubs culture and the Lions have got plenty of them since the "Fev" fiasco, they The Lions IMO are somewhat like the dumping ground of the AFL with picking up troubled players that are good enough to play the game at the top level but not smart enough to fit in - They the Lions have not had too much success in the recruiting stakes since "Fev" left the club and through this too many many more good players followed.

Their draft picks are struggling to even get a game and their weaker listed players and rookies are struggling to get a kick in the NEAFL, add to this, the kids that brained their NEAFL Team over the past couple of years like Wagner, Oxley and Weller to name a few are braining it at other clubs. IMO its time to clean the club up from the top down - It worked when Lethal was appointed - One win to date does not make a winter. Before you all point out the obvious by reply - Yes, currently the Dockers are 4 - 0 but they will be daylight ahead of the Lions, ladder wise at the end of the Season!!!!!!!

Thunderdoc made a prediction that the Lions would be hard pressed to win a senior and NEAFL game this year - One senior game up which may be their first and last for the year, but I am with him on the NEAFL side of things, they are wasting the clubs money with the cattle running and keep running around in the NEAFL.

Thanks for the reply BB.
I'm going a bit off-topic here but I remember when the Brisbane Bears were first established. And it seemed that they picked up the cast-offs and problem children from other clubs. Their first few years were somewhere between embarrassing and deplorable.
From your reply it sounds as if the club has drifted back to those bad old days.
But I don't claim to be an expert here. What I know is that it's good for the other NEAFL clubs to be able to see the Brisbane game coming up because they can pencil in a morale-boosting win.
And it's good for mug punters like me in tipping competitions to be able to chalk up at least one tip a week by tipping against the Lions !

spot on JAB......as i said earlier, Demons are much improved this year on and off the field but they are still short half a dozen class players. Attended a breakfast for parents etc of the club recently and new player manager Sean Young (recruited from AFL Tassie) was at pains to say theres a 3 year plan in place to build a strong rep side, ie Canberra, from Albury/Wagga/ACT,SthCoast regions. There is undoubtedly talent there. We'll see....however they are definitely making the right noises. I doubt they'll beat Uni tho!

Injury list is a large part of it. When you have the youngest list in the AFL and you're missing the below number of players you're always going to be up against it.

Rockliff, Beams, Mathieson, McGrath, Mcstay, Paparone, Close, Watts, Beasley, Skinner, Hanley (not Pearce). Thats probably 4 best 22 players as well as two fringe best 22. having said that its not all just injuries. We've got a bit of an imbalance at the moment with an oversupply of fringe outside flankers and talls with a shortage of developing genuine midfielders. Having said that even the AFL listed guys have been really poor in the NEAFL so far.

As far as the earlier post goes I think its a bit of a stretch blaming everything on fev coming and going. Yes we've lost players, guys that would be in that age group we're missing at the moment. I'd like to see the list of these troubled players that we've brought in since Fev left. In that time we've had the following players traded in.

2011 - Dayne Zorko, Ben Hudson, Jordan Lisle
2012 - Stefan Martin, Brent Moloney
2013 - Jackson Paine, Trent West, Luke McGuane
2014 - Dayne Beams, Mitch Robinson, Allen Christensen
2015 - Ryan Bastinac, Tom Bell

Thats not exactly a list of trouble makers is it.

Players traded out in that time.
Mitch Clark, Sam Docherty, Elliot Yeo, Jared Polec, Billy Longer, James Aish, Joel Patfull, Patrick Karnezis, Jack Crisp

So yes we've suffered from players going home (5 in 1 year was a massive loss) but the last few years have been much improved (since the board and management were cleaned out).

like I said, I saw the NEAFL Lions last season and they had the same injury problem then - the interchange bench looked like a warzone and Leigh Harding was holding the on-field team together - as assistant coach he's surely not the right one to be doing that.
But your answer might be a good one - youngest list in the AFL.
Let's hope you're right and that their endurance improves with a few pre-seasons.

Worth noting that we also only have 4 first round picks on our whole list. So our young guys who are playing in the reserves are picks in the 30-60 range for the most part. Think gws would have that many on their reserves bench at some stages

We've definitely had more than that many playing in a single NEAFL game

Fatcat08,

Not to many notable success stories through the years in the above earlier post list presented, a lot of headlines for some past indiscretions and just a lot of hard found supporters money to get them?????

Would the reason for the 4 first round picks on the list be because the Brains trust in the player development department have swapped the rest of their previous early round picks for these failures of the other current clubs, second hand used clothes are just that - they tart you up but don't make you the winner in the fashion stakes, add to that when the original early draft picks that you have and have had recently and then re-signed these picks without doing anything to excite even in the NEAFL level, then what hope is the senior team for depth and the club for on going success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! May the broom be long of bristles, quick and not sweep around any corners.

Recruiting is not rocket science, just make sure that ability instead of pedigree is one of the number one priorities. The Lions NEAFL side is a current disgrace and the coaches responsible IMO for this should be shown the door.

Do any local radio station have a NEAFL show that can downloaded as a podcast?

I went to see Southport v Sydney Swans today.
Southport probably won the first quarter and squared the second, but the Swans got away after that and won by about 7 goals.
It was pretty obvious that it was a team of full-time professional footballers (with 4 or 5 toppies) against a team of enthusiastic amateurs. The most telling stat would have been broken tackles - the Swans had the physical strength, balance and persistence to stand and break tackles then move the ball to their advantage. You can't blame Southport for that - they just don't have the techniques that the Swans have learned.
I liked the games of Sully (#12) and Anthony (#21), especially Anthony who ran himself ragged and gave up exhausted in the end.
And I liked the way that Southport stuck to the task right to the end. The rain came, they were a few goals down and didn't seriously look like crawling back but they went as hard at the end as they did at the start. Nathan Bock was praising their hardness at the ball and I was surprised by that myself - they are a very impressive footy team and I hope they can hold their heads high on the long trip home.

Having seen NT Thunder a couple of weeks ago, they didn't look to be nearly up to the Southport standard and it seems that Southport will feature in finals this year.

Reckon recruiting is a bit harder than rocket science sometimes! And in fact less about who but more about what you do with them after recruiting. Hawks for instance recruit low picks but get gems bc they put them into acgreatcsystem. Lions still developing this.
