Review Neagle

Adds to te structure of our team.

Noticeably struggled with his endurance tonight.

Needs a big pre-season to get the most out of his ability.

Admittedly I watched last night's game in front of the TV.

From that perspective, Neagle looked very ordinary. His lack of agility costs us and I fear any big man could do the same job only better than Neagle. Hardingham was the man that sets our structure straight, his leading is top class.

I'll have to watch the game again, I didn't recall Neagle busting too many packs, not enough to warrant selection anyhow.

I think I would take more pleasure in big Jay making the grade then any other player on the list

I feel the same way. It is getting easier to justify as well.

He presented well last night and his hands were (and are) awesome. He looks fitter than I've ever seen.

On form like last night Jay is in our best side. I don't know who comes out of the side though.

I think we might ultimatley end up with Ryder being number 1 ruck and Hooker being used like a Leigh Brown utility type although Hooker would be down back.

If he keeps up his 2 goal average, I'll eat my words. I'm one of his biggest critics.

Not sure about an earlier comment that he breaks packs with this leading/marking. I've watched his last 2 games closely and still doesn't fit the mould as a true FF by any stretch of the imagination.

However, if he can become something similar to Leigh Brown, we may have unearthed ourselves another invaluable player.

Until then, still looks slow and clearly needs a big pre-season to find out if he's worthwhile or a 'spud'

Lloyd of last year still wins my vote over Neagle, but potentially could warm to him as long as he makes the most of his chances.

From what I can see, Neagle never really overstepped his mark (disregarding North's #18 making it difficult for him to stop) and this is the reason why the umpires called it back. The only reason Neagle got the handball going later on was because all the North players never gave him space to begin with.

He showed his opponent the ball, then his immediate next action was to give it off despite not overstepping the mark, as clearly the momentum was moving away from the goals, not towards it. Thats what I and several thousand supporters could see last week. Note, all bomber supporters (and I mean everyone within 20 meteres of my seat) groaned and shook their heads and asked why he would attempt that.

Thankfully, he was able to take his kick.

What about his pick up, at speed, in traffic, in the middle of the ground.
Blind turn and handball that led to Ryder's first goal?

Neagle doesn't battle for agility, he battles for sustained running, but that's improved.

The kid is now playing with some confident, as shown by his second goal. Cool, calm, banana, slotted it. Take that confidence into a preseason and we have a 50 goal a year forward.

Neagle's first quarter was simply awesome, he really helped set up the game I felt. The work he did up the ground was very impressive, & he was just so clean and quick with his hands.

He has pure football talent. I can't believe anyone could diss his game last night. He is critical structurally, & did his job

Completely agree with this.

There's a reason opposition supporters think we overrate our young players.

First of all, are you implying opposition supporters never overrate their young players/recruits?...

Second of all, since when does Essendon give a shit what the opposition thinks?

AFAIK, I wasn't overrating Neagle in the slightest. At least not in terms of this game. In the post I replied to, you claimed Neagle was very ordinary, to which I disagreed with and regarded it as nonsense. From what I saw (and as it seems, others as well) was someone who presented well and provided a target going inside 50 and further up the ground. You then continued to claim that any big man could do a better job than Neagle, which I also considered nonsense. There were plenty of moments where his talent shone through, especially in his kicking at goal.

Your comment about Hardingham "setting our structure right" made no sense to me either, at least in the context of this thread, as him and Neagle are both different players and create a different presence up forward. Hardingham is that vertical leaping small forward, whereas Neagle is a tall bulldozer on the lead. You bringing up Hardingham's performance makes no difference to how well Neagle presented.

You then mentioned that you had not seen Neagle busting too many packs, which is ridiculous as he was doing just that all night. Either way, this wasn't what was warranting his selection, it was his 2 goal average and the fact that he's worked his big fat cholesterol heart out in the past few weeks that gets him into the side.

When you (yes, you) suggested watching the game again, I thought it was a brilliant idea.

It's funny you should bring up the topic of overrating though, as underrating is just as bad, if not worse IMO.

Not to mention playing on different opponents.

Last week Neagle was playing on Scott Thompson, probably in the best half a dozen full backs in the comp.

Hardingham started on Macmillan didn't he? Another first gamer.

If anyone wants a good example of how Neagle sets our structure right.
Watch the replay of Hille's mark and goal in the last quarter.

Neagle leads hard and straight and takes his defender with him, leaving the space behind him for Hille to move into. Don't get a stat for that.

Leigh Harding IIRC.

Exactly what we need to move forward - selfless, team orientated play. Neagle is going get the ball kicked to him 10 times at least in a game in our forward line, but its stuff like this that separates good teams from great teams.

Could be right, I thought Harding started across half back, but it doesn't really matter.

Neagle and Gumby for that matter, holding down key posts make Hardingham's job significantly easier.

For that reason, I hope we give Carlisle a gig this week.

Do you want 3 talls v Carlton's forwardline?

its been reported that Jay did a pre-season within a season this year, and i think it shows, if he can stay fit and have a massive pre-season nexy year might just have a 50-60 goal kicker on our hands...

Would have thought Carlisle would get monstered.

Any more so than we would have thought Gumby would have been monstered in his first year?

I reckon he has more or as much size on him as Gumby did in year one.

I think four games experience could be massive for him.
