Review Neagle

This kid can undoubtedly play but in 4 years has never, ever had the required level of fitness and commitment to play AFL. He basically has 1 pre season and the 2011 season to save his AFL career. IMO, he should get any surgery required out of the way now and start training immediately. You can see Carlisle overtaking him very quickly unless he extracts the digit!

If Jay really, really wants it then I'd love to hear that he's starting his preseason like a month before everyone else. I remember Courtney Johns did this a few years ago, didn't work out obviously lol but it shows a serious commitment. I'm praying for an injury free preseason.

I'm over the 'one more year' excuse.

He's basically a VFL player we can perhaps utilise if pickings up forward are slim. Keeping a player like Jay only ******s our progress.

Whilst I had hoped he would prove me wrong, he hasn't and I see no use for him as an AFL listed player.

No club in their right mind would recruit him or trade for him, so why should he be kept on our list.

I also saw him for bendigo yesterday and thought he moved and presented well higher up the ground with Bock/Bellchambers at full forward, he did set up three or four goals for the day.

I reckon he could develop into a handy 3rd tall who leads hard and fast...a bit of a Corey Jones type...did he show a bit of that potential?

The talk of souvlakis and Neagle in the Kouta thread got me thinking. If anyone is going to turn big Jay into a league footballer, it's Jimmy. Hirdy getting the job is the best thing that could have happened for Neagle and without getting my hopes up too high, we might finally see him realise his talent next year.

Cautiously confident.

Yep! :thumbsu:

Thought the exact same thing stay true. In fact I was going to create a thread making a big call on Neagle to turn it around with a massive preseason but I guess you beat me to it. Him and Reimers I feel have the most upside under a disciplined Hird outfit.

I reckon hirdy will come in and go, dyson your still no good, your gone, neagle your still a lazy fat bastard, your gone. Etc.
Neagle had been in the system long enough to realize it takes 110% commitment.
I think neagle has talent, but no desire and if his dad wasn't at the club, he may not still be there.

Agree.

1 more year for Neagle.

Otherwise, that's it imo.

Agree.

If the panel we end up with can't get this guy firing nothing can. Oodles of talent but I think he just lacks something. Self belief? Confidience? Discipline? I don't know, but if the mentoring available to him next year can't make things click nothing will.

Neagle should have been gone 2 years ago. The only reason he was kept was because "it is too hard for him to get a game with Lloyd and Lucas in the team, give him a crack once they are gone". But, in reality, at the time they were there, his performances weren't good enough to get a game. Then he started getting a game purely because they weren't there anymore. Give him the flick, for gods sake!

Have to agree with Mayhem, I see no use for him is a list clogger and is preventing one of our other KP players cementing there position in the forward line.

Showed signs when he was younger but lacks neccesary effort, intensity and fitness to be a good player for us in the position we need him. Better off trying someone else there especially if Gumbleton keeps improving and stays fit.

It's not like they *have* to play him, and it's not like he's been an automatic inclusion ... ever.

Surely you're taking the piss. :o

It's the other way around, we have to play him, because he's pretty much the only true FF that we have on the park...

In the past 3 years, he's been more of an automatic inclusion than a hard working one imo. Needs to change the scales next year, and quick. Last pre-season to do so.

I'm not even giving Neagle a whole year to prove himself. I think he has got this preseason, injured or not, to be fit and firing for round 1. This means playing most preseason games and kicking goals. If he cannot do that he is finished as an AFL footballer in my eyes. There is no point in wasting another season on him.

How is he preventing anyone from doing anything?

Well we have persited with him and actually retired two players to find a position for him, we don't have anyone who can play that position right now, but if he were to stay and we were to recruit a KP forward from draft/trade we would probably have more of a chance of developing a good forward line set up, then to keep those players out in the hope Neagle pulls through for us.

If all our KP position players are fit there is no spot for him and for a bloke who has been on our list for six years he has had ample time to find a position.

Keep an eye on Merv Neagles younger boys coming through.....Going to be a handy footballer.

Merv's a great bloke and great coach in his own right and would have been a handy bloke to have around the club in some sort of coaching capacity.

Neagle's miles behind Willo. Either way, he's played about 25 games in 3 years, so he's not an automatic selection. He's been lucky that we've struggled for fitness between Lucas & Gumby and he's been gifted games that way.
Which successful clubs actually have a designated, stay-at-home full-forward???

Agree with AS9. Pre-season will tell the tale.

They were both still twice the player that Neagle is! Knights was playing Lloyd out of position.
You're right, he shouldn't have been making him play a role he clearly wasn't capable of. ie, AFL football. Gets pretty hard when he's still the captain tho.

I'm still amazed that people think Lloyd (let alone Lucas) had mileage left. Obsession with the name, not the performance. His legs were knackered, he couldn't run.

I am not one who thinks that we should have kept Lucas and Lloyd on (although both or one could have been handy if fit), we retired them for Neagle's betterment and to look toward the future. He hasn't repaid us in the six seasons he has had for us, finally when he gets given a chance in a position he can have to himself, he fails, now I would have thought that having this oppurtunity has shown us what Neagle is capable of, which IMO is not up to being the player we need him/or the position to be.

You seem to think that keeping him on regardless of whether he plays or not is the right thing to do!! How can you justify that?? Fair enough we don't have a full forward atm but you make do with what you have and persisit with the strategies that will see you be succesful in the future.

In the meantime we should be looking at a) making someone a full forward b) recruting another forward via draft or trade c) using multiple options through that position ie Hille, Ryder, Hardingham, Gumby and Hurley.

Neagle is not the answer so move him on....

Only if you completely ignore what I wrote.
Dunce.
It doesn't matter how handy the old guys would have been if fit.
They weren't fit, they weren't handy.

I wrote that if they were fit, they could have been handy.

They weren't so I have moved on, the argument is to do with Neagle not with Lloyd and Lucas.

I said they retired two players for him and if you read what I said I did admit that I wanted them moved on.

Do you like just to argue with people without giving reasons why we should keep Neagle???
