Review Neagle

Err... Depth to cover injuries?
I've heard this can occasionally be useful to a team.

I swear I must be missing something here.
Nope, didn't you know, there's no point having 1st and 2nd year KPP on your list unless they're in the current team's plans.

I like Neagle up forward. He didn't dominate the game, but he gave us some much-needed structure and 3 goals wasn't a bad return. Hurley also looked more comfortable down back. We should do what the Bulldogs do with Lake, in that we play him back with the occasional foray forward when we need goals. We needed Gumbleton out there as we broke down at CHF.

cant believe people are bagging neagle today......thought he did very well considering the delivery he was getting and the fact that it was his 2nd game for the year.......he provided a contest....yes the goals were a bit cheap but provided some good leads took a couple of strong marks

Neagle played well today & looks a lot fitter, seems to have dropped a lot of weight. :thumbsu:

Was really impressed with his game, that lovely pin point kick to Ryder leading out of the 50 was simply superb (apparently his field kicking has been an issue, it's not as good as his goal kicking)..

Really really good today, took some lovely marks, hopefully with the inclusion of Gumby next week at CHF, Neagle may be able to play his normal game and take on the full back in a one on one contest and use those big hips of his to get that big frame in the way to clunk a grab..

Has always been a good field kick and good decision maker,

I dont mind him spending time around half forward because of the above qualities.

Looks more of a natural forward than Hurley. Hurley has had some good games up forward, but he's also had some very quiet ones. Hurley also looks more comfortable down back, but if we come up against short forward lines in the future, than Hurley can go up forward to stretch them.

With potential forward liners in Gumby, Neagle, resting Ryder and possibly Carlisle/Still, I don't see the point in now keeping the Hurley forward trial going. I think another positive of this is to free up Pears as the main ball user out of the back half. He is a good user of the ball and can run and carry when given the chance.

I took a position near the interchange yesterday, he wasn't blowing too hard during his breaks, but still looked a bit lumpy. The sooner his leads are honoured ( Stanton's eyes up instead of down was a shocker for Jay) the better for EFC. Never surrendered though.

Which is miles better than Gumbleton has averaged all year...

Funny how its two goals on a platter, yet our other forwards don't seem to be able to get into advantageous positions or are too afraid to take the onus themselves.

From memory he only had a single one on one contest, because the midfielders were mucking around and don't have the balls to go long, so by the time the kick came in he was out of position, would have been a very frustrating day for Neagle.

He was beaten at least 3 times one on one in the first quarter and caught behind. Lets leave it and see how he goes this week. I am just not a fan at all but would be delighted to be proved wrong.

Neagle gives us nothing below his knees. If he doesn't take it in the air he's screwed and so are we. No way should he be played outside 50.

Yes, delivery was poor but I don't think he presented all that well either for the most part.

I thought he played well. Definately well enough not to get dropped?
I would like to see him play out the year. Give him a real go.

People are saying that he has trimmed down abit. Does anyone have any photos to compare the First Round with this round? Unfortunately I do not have a very good memory.

Neagle played well on the weekend against Melbourne but I don't think we have seen enough of him to make a decision about his future. He needs to string a couple of games together and kick multiple goals to stay in the team at the moment and into the future.

I'm not entirely sure Neagle believes he belongs yet but this could be the thing that he needs to be a success. A good example of this I believe is Jack Riewoldt. He has come along leaps and bounds this year once he worked out that he belongs and his importance to the overall scheme of things at Punt Road.

There is a lot of if's with Jay but I think if he can be given a sustained run in the firsts to get confidence and gain confidence of the group (so they have the belief to kick to him), then I think we'll see an entirely different footballer next year.

It may not be the right way for all footballers but I think Jay needs his ego stroked not crushed through continual yo-yoing between grades. Build him up, not knock him down and let's see what happens. It's amazing what confidence can do for enigmatic talents and I think he is a real talent.

I remember the incidents very well as they were RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!, on many occasions he led and our midfield ****ed around with ball. No one taking the initiative to kick it, by then his space was closed and he cut back the square, then they picked out his opponent like they meant to do it.

Gees I've never been a huge fan of Neagle, but all things considered yesterday was better than a pass mark.

Some field kicks in recent weeks in the VFL say so otherwise..

Needs to kick the bloody things, not try and pin point a pass.

He is Jay Nagle after all, not David Zaharakis :D

Two goals on a platter five chest marks and pumped in just about every one on one with his opponent. 13 touches = 3 per quarter don't get too excited. I will give you that for him they are huge stats.

He did take one contested mark.

I remember him putting on two smothers after the ball went to ground.
I also remember him taking the ball at ground level, at speed, to handball to Stanton for the first goal of the third.

Only problem with keeping Hurley back is what to do with Pears next season. We could have a back line featuring Fletcher, Hurley, Pears and Hooker. That is pretty top heavy, unless Fletcher played on the smalls.

I think that Neagle is agile for his size and reasonable when the ball is below his knees.

I believe that if he can get fitter, he can spend time around half forward ( his secondary position ), because he can use the ball better than most - nothwithstanding that he will never be a big possession gatherer.

Make all of them earn their spot.

At times this year, Hurley, Pears and Hooker at different times, have served up footy that wasn't at AFL standard and should have seen them in the VFL.

Hurley looks so natural at FB, his ability to work his opponent under the ball is fantastic. Really reminds me a lot of Brian Lake.

I also think Pears can play on a small/medium forward. I think he'd be a good match up for someone like Steve Johnson, Mark LeCras.

When he was drafted and we expected him to probably get a lot fitter a lot quicker, and that Matthew Lloyd was going to be around a bit longer, the school of thought was that he'd be a power half forward and play a similar role to Andrew Embley when he was at his peak.

IIRC, weren't 3 of his 4 scoring shots also once the ball had hit the deck?

Interesting that you compare Hurley with Lake.

Watching a replay of the game showed me how good Hurley is in the air - but also that he needs to be more temperate in the air - In other words be more selective.

Definitely some similarities with Lake.

Bit harsh on Hurley, Pears and Hooker - Young players will often have ups and downs.

Pears is an interesting one - I dont think his form has been as poor as it has been painted - definitely feel that he has less goals kicked on him compared to last year.

I don't think it's harsh, I think it's realistic.

Of course young players have ups and downs, and I don't think it's a bad thing to rotate the three of them up until the time in which Fletcher retires.

Quite simply, a hack! One of the worst big bodies players I've ever seen. Talentless, lazy and lost footballers ever to don the red and black.

Still, leave him in there, see how the number stack up.

With enough rope as they say......

One can usually find him standing outside Boost bar in Highpoint, opposite Sunglasses Hut such is the kid's application.

Played well again last night.

If he'd kicked better than 1.4 (which is really surprising from a very good kick) people would be looking at him a lot differently.

We look so much better with a leading target in the team, especially one who can burst open packs like Jay does.

Will be an important part of our future.
