Essendon greats Neale Daniher and Michael Long have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for their service across the community.

Daniher:
Originally awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for his tireless work in co-founding FightMND in 2016, Daniher has been elevated to Officer of the Order of Australia.

Today’s Big Freeze 7 highlights the former Dons Captain’s unflagging determination to find a cure for motor neurone disease, having raised $50 million for treatment research since 2014.

An 81-gamer with the Bombers from 1979-1990 and club Hall of Fame inductee, Daniher has been a key figure in leading the FightMND campaign in helping educate the public and driving fundraising initiatives for curing MND.

Longy:
Essendon great Michael Long has earned a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to Australian Rules Football and the Indigenous community.

The dual Bombers’ premiership player has been a forefront advocate, campaigner and leader for Australia’s Indigenous people, highlighted by his work with the Michael Long Foundation, The Long Walk and the Michael Long Learning and Leadership centre in Darwin.

In 2004, Long famously embarked on a 650km trek from Melbourne to Canberra to meet with then Prime Minister John Howard and discuss Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues, establishing today's widely recognised The Long Walk movement.

The 190-gamer’s incredible feat to bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues back on the national agenda has inspired Australians from all walks of life to appreciate Indigenous culture.

Long’s reconciliation efforts were highlighted in the recent Dreamtime in Perth match, where over 10,000 people joined the 1993 Norm Smith medallist for The Long Walk in Perth from the WACA to Optus Stadium, showing the nation-wide respect and admiration for his work.
